Why I think Race-Class combinations ARE important, and removing restrictions could be harmful

It will. Race diversity will drop significantly if everyone can just play every class as a Human or Blood Elf.

TRUTH.

There is no animal in creation sneakier than a cow. I grew up with cows, and they will sneak up on you better than a cat. You think you’re alone and the cows are like 30 yards away, and then you turn your back for 30 seconds and there’s a cow sniffing your literal hair to give you a heart attack…and then they act like you scared them when you jump.

You would think that a creature weighing half a ton would make noise when approaching, but they don’t. They are silent like ninjas and if they want something, they will find a way to get to it.

Mechagnome Rogue

Sounds more like Goblins, yet they can be Shaman.

I think most people think of horses and the sound of shod hooves not unshod hooves like cow and deer and goat.

Who said that? Nobody said that at all. That is the typical “let’s exaggerate to the farthest extent possible, and by doing so…entirely misinterpreting what somebody said, then forming an opinion based on said misinterpretation”
It is ignorant and wasteful. You missed the whole point, and still thought it was wise to respond like this. I will spend no more time on you.

Hooves make clacking noises on stone.
You, and Meriweather here are thinking about cattle out in an open field. Anybody can walk quietly on soft ground…
I mean, even in-game, your mount’s footfall noises change based off of what kind of turf you are on…

Was unaware that they can be rogues. That is funnier that it should be lol.

Shaman commune with the spirits of the ELEMENTS. The actual apects of the elements. They speak with their ancestors. And Goblins are “stereotypically greedy” so they defend the lands simply out of greed and land wealth. Yeah, they might damage nature a lot, but they also stop other people from doing more damage.
It is a loose connection. Also, I feel like they “made a deal” with the aspects of the Elements.

Meanwhile druids and such are in tune with the concept of nature. All of it. Not just the elementals, but just the spirit of growth and passion and love and kindness and and and other soft stuff…
Elementals VS Concept of growth and nature.
Elementals are just a part of nature, but a very specific part of it.

I can see goblins being shaman, but it is a blurry vision at best.

There is no way the Tauren don’t put on some “horse-shoes”. Especially a Tauren that has to go to places where there are paved roads/hallways and such. Their hooves would split so badly if they didn’t …

Do you see any Tauren and Draenei with shoes? All boots stop at the ankle and any that are shoes just do not show.

Okay…and the horseshoes go on the very bottom of the hoof…its not a cap…have you ever seen a horse with horseshoes on? Its just a little metal U on the botttom. You can see it slightly.
But they don’t do it visually in WoW. It’s kind of weird. Now that I think about it, why don’t the Tauren have “cowshoes” on? Do cows not have the same problem that horses have? I know they shoe cattle and (ocassionally) goats even.
Now I feel like I have to advocate proper hoof safety for our hooved allies…
Just like having humanoid feet, you need proper shoes so you can keep walking and fighting…

I have and the only hooved race that have a cap on their hooves is LF Draenei.
Tauren and Draenei do not have any cap or horseshoe on their feet. You can see the bottoms of their hooves when they run or kneel, no shoes.

Pretty much. The races aren’t collectives following a hive-mind or a single ruleset. They are filled with individuals, some of which will go outside the norm and the player character is one of those individuals.

The player is the story tho. The adventure they have is the story. The literal story is just a tool for them to experience it. The same way flying or path of frost is. Ideally there aren’t any or very limited number of ways the game restricts the ways the player can create new experiences. The actual story is completely not understandable. There are just massive chunks just not there and between every expansion there is like half of an expansion worth of story thats just not there. And then bam we are in the next expansion. I still don’t why we did all that stuff for wrathion in mop. Then oh I guess graosh is in draenor now. Why? How did he get there? Didn’t we just beat him? Why is this important? Who knows. It’s like in between every expansion the retcon half of everything and just start a new story that happens to have some of the same characters.

I know…I never said they do. I said “there is no way they dont”. As in Blizzard should add in the visual and sound effect…things that are already in the game for horse mounts and such.
I think you were thinking that I said its already in-game.
No, I want it in-game because it makes sense. Here…just made it lol.

Prior to eventually being comically insane geniuses - Goblins in their primal states while under Troll control were very shamanistic. The modern / current Goblins still very much are - there are quests through out cata that detail this, they dare not to seek older ancestors / spirits due to not knowing about money / wealth, cause older generations are such bummers, and only go back a few generations.

The elements originally turned their back on the Goblins due to their rapid tech increase and damage to the surrounding areas. Though Goblins being Goblins, the masters of their craft; Contracts - became able to barter / broker a deal with anyone and anything.

It is said that Goblin Warlocks actually, who, so crafty in their trade is what inspired Goblin Shamans to return. Though elementals being a bit more untrusting required form of payment first before making a contract. This often would be promises of a trinket to amp up the elemental’s power greatly to sign the contract, and trinket would outright fail right after the deal is made, locking the elemental(s) into an inescapable bargain that would make Goblin Locks smile.

Well… all but one goblin shaman who was too green and inexperienced in their own life style nearly got pounded by his own fire elemental until a new deal was made.

This set up can go great with Goblin Paladins. Since Goblin Priests are literally Televangelist; Pay for a Prayer / Gold to cure that Cold Scheme. A few goblin priests even make little jokes about having some muscle go door to door with a collection plate.

Now, goblins though vastly comical are devious and truly tactful like no other race (even gnomes can’t compare here). They put their mind and devotion into ways of achieving gold, despite it being honorable to greatly less than will maximize those efforts. This is were I parrot,

While other will go back and forth with what they feel. there are certainties that are well with in the lore even if the “race” in question doesn’t seem like it would truly fit.

Yes, having restrictions DOES limit “players’ creativity”, only if they don’t want to pay attention to lore. Warcraft is a setting where race and culture are one in the same. Why do Gnomes have a bonus to Engineering? Are they PHYSICALLY more capable engineers than other races? No – they get a bonus because it’s part of their culture. And again, your Class selection is an extension of that culture.

Draenei cannot be Warlocks – why? As we’ve seen from the Eredar, they are in fact VERY POTENT Warlocks. They cannot be Warlocks, because doing so goes against everything their people have been through.

The game has had these restrictions since launch, and even the RTS games had similar “restrictions” of its own (each race commanding entirely different units). It is the status quo, and it was a formula that worked. Cataclysm introduced a lot of problematic choices, and while it’s certainly not the sole reason for it, it cannot be overlooked that the playerbase had been dwindling every since Cataclysm launched; so it clearly wasn’t THAT great a success. There’s no evidence to suggest that removing restrictions would be any more successful.

I’m all about exercising creativity, but it needs to be done within the structure of the setting. Considering how often people claim major NPC’s to be a “Mary Sue”, this is exactly the same thing when you’re saying “MY character should be whatever I want them to be”. Are we to say that Demon Hunters should be able to wear Plate and have Titan’s Grip, simply because SOMEONE can write a fanfic to “explain” it?

Again, I turn back to my earlier analogy of kids playing outside. If you’re playing a game where you’re all pretending to be knights fighting a dragon, you can’t just have one kid decide he’s going to be Spider-Man or Iron-Man. You have to respect the setting, and part of that means accepting that there ARE limitations.

Because the title gave all the information. You dont need a wall of text to get the point across. If he would have made a TL;DR like people do when they actually want you to read their large comment, or would have given a summary, or would have opened up in discussion with other people who came to chat, then I would have known he was truly serious about this.

No. The race/class limitations aren’t lore. There are lore characters that “violate” the race/class limitations.

This is bad. Again: no race is a monolith. No one race in the history of time has ever had 100% agreement.

You argument against Draenei warlocks is especially nonsensical. Yes, Draenei have fought against the Legion. So have orcs, and that didn’t stop some orcs from turning to the fel and demons as a source of power. There are power hungry individuals in all cultures. You could also take the angle of a Draenei warlock viewing it as poetic justice. They enslave demons to do their bidding against their enemy.

Must have been genetically grown in a tube. Honestly. this parroting of this statement is rather bland and moot; more so when you are trying to involve children, who (if you ever were a child should know they) have such insanely active imaginations rules rarely apply in the game of make believe, as they make up rules on the spot at any given moment for any reason they see fit. Cause you know, children.

Rules vs. Structure - DH’s are structured to be mobile. Plate in WoW’s world would cause DH’s to be a punching bag. Thus the rule comes into play; mobility or protection? The rule allows the structure to be expanded upon.

DHs can tank and utilize the demon within for greater survivability that Plate armor couldn’t offer them, while using their structural builds to have protection and combat mobility.
While Warriors, Paladins and DKs are trained and have honed their bodies to ensure they are maximizing plate armor for not just defensive but as well offensive combat.

But not every gnome is an engineer. Yes, it’s cultural, but not every gnome partakes in that culture, because racial culture and character identity aren’t the same thing.

Too lazy, didn’t read your post.
If you can’t bother to read other people’s comments…why do you think anybody cares what you think? Pretty egotistic of you.

Regarding this particular case, the way it was handled showed mostly a lack of knowledge of the night elves.

The character in question is a priestress of Elune and when she choose to become part of the paladin order, she is still fighting in the name of Elune so it’s obvious that she is not using the Light.

This is a technicality, but Blizzard (and most of the players it seems) forgot that a priestess of Elune is is the equivalent of a paladin of the light:
They have been seen fighting with a bow on their saber in Warcraft III.
The moonglaive on the Priestess Moonsaber also show that they have no problem to go in close combat.

My point is that in this particular case, they have not canonized a Night Elf Paladin, it already existed but for Elune, not the Light.
(and on a side note Priest of the Moon should have been a class on its own)

As for a night elf paladin of the Light, come on it was shown time to time that if you are a believer / servant toward a force, the later will grant you its power.

I still remember Bwonsamdi asking my worgen priestess if she was interested to change her cult for him (when you die at Zandalaar as a priest) so it’s possible for any race to be a priest of Bwonsamdi ( and the powers that go with it)

So having a night elf / worgen / pandaren paladin is perfectly possible.

But i am not for giving everything to everyone either: The Demon Hunters are too specific to be given to any other race.

It stands for Too Long, Didn’t Read.

You getting offended by my comment says something though… It is a TL;DR post though, look at the comment above mine. Implying that it puts people to sleep with how overdrawn and boring it is. Look at how the vast majoority of the comments here arent even talking about his comment, they are just going off the title only and are mainly going off of eachother comments. Very few people here actually read the post… very obvious by the comment section here.

Take a look at all the comments here, vey few directed at OP, most directed at talking to themselves, saying random things that dont even fit with the subject material and a bunch of people arguing with one another. Mainly people talking to one another. No one is addressing the OP.

Comment above me got 119 likes. I kinda doubt you read it tbh. Just like everyone else in the thread… only came here to argue with a random poster. I made the point that he got his point across with the title.

And once again TL;DR stands for Too Long:Didnt Read. As I already said, all the comments here are either people referring too the title, arguing with one another, or commenting on how it was too long and they arent going to read it.
