Honestly no it’s not. I’m kind of tried of Class Restrictions and Gatekeeping all together. Just to be clear if you have a Problem with the current ones like Night Elf Mages or Draenei Rogues, Night Elf Paladins, or whatever kinds of classes that is available. Then leave.
Personally through I was happy and fine with Night Elves having Mages along with the Orcs since they were once in the lore and players shouldn’t be gatekeeped to not play these class options for a race that still is and has history.
Telling people who feel differently to “just leave” is awfully dismissive. Especially when the game has a precedent of nearly 18 YEARS of these restrictions.
I think it’s in poor taste to completely upend the system, which has been the status quo for so long, with no better alternative than just completely abandoning lore and culture.
Just gonna point out, you have said this since the start, and turn down what others has stated they like and disliked in their own opinion as well dismissed suggestions. Though you have yet to bring forth “no better alternative.” Only how it brings you dismay, distress and break your immersion thinking about how there can be anything other than what is current now.
So. Instead of parroting “got to follow the rules!” What are the better alternatives you seem to know but not have shared yet?
I don’t see any “problems” with the current system (other than the Demon Hunter, which certainly needs one more option on each faction). I think it’s fine to reevaluate the restrictions and lift any that don’t make a lot of sense, but none really spring to mind. As I’ve said, I think some of the options are already a bit too generous, but overall, I think the status quo is good.
I’m certainly not pretending my opinion is any more valid than anyone else’s. But if you’re electing to CHANGE from an existing structure that clearly works and has worked well for many years, I think the impetus of the argument falls on those who want to see it changed. And I feel like the game loses a lot more than it gains by removing restrictions.
Now, in the case of Demon Hunters, I would definitely offer they are TOO restrictive. I would personally say they should be able to also play as “Eredar” and presumably Orcs, given who would’ve been available to join Illidan.
Now jumping off from that, I think “Eredar” might actually be a good choice for an “Allied Race”. There’s a ton of room for story developments there as well, but it satisfies the idea of a “Draenei” Demon Hunter, Rogue, and even Warlock (but barred from being Paladins, Shamans, or perhaps even Priests). A fitting counterpart could be formalizing the Grimtotem (and culturally-different cosmetics, maybe more Voodoo-looking war paint options, darker color palette, etc), who WOULD fit the role of Rogue, or again even Warlock, but presumably not Druid or Paladin, Shaman is questionable (Priest would actually make MORE sense for them, imo).
Again though, rules help prop up the setting. Like my earlier analogy (likely lost somewhere in the replies), it’s like if you’re playing make-believe with your friends and you’re all trying to be knights or wizards fighting a dragon, versus that one kid who wants to be Spider-Man. If you don’t have SOME rules, then nobody takes it seriously, and it loses much of its luster.
These are, at the very best, said loosely. Very loosely here, compromises, not “Better Alternatives.” Mainly said to try to win over more support; while trying to invoke lore and in your own words “race and culture” while greatly ignoring it at the same time. Cause seemingly there is a pattern you are presenting off and I might have placed my finger on it
So, honest question(s); how upset, well not really upset, how bothered are you by other players in their mogs, pet and mount set ups?
Do you whisper, or call out players who are NOT wearing class and/or race appropriate appearances? Or do you call out a Paladin riding around in Felsteed Annihilator? or how bout a Druid on Love Rocket or Sky Golem despite being able to shape shift or the fact they are lore wise extremely environmentally damaging?
WoW came out in 2004 and with the release of Cata (2010) we saw quite a number of race/class restrictions lifted. The game may have been around 18 years, but those restrictions have not. If anything they set a precedent that things do change. Slowly. lol
Well Id prefer DH stay the combo it is but uh…I am biased.
Overall though I have appreciated your posts in the thread and the sentence above excluded, completely agree with you.
The “counterpoints” to your points though…says a lot and it is unfortunate to see such responses and the lack of general thought and consideration others have in relation to it. I think a lot of people do not realize how significant the core of any story is to inspiring and motivating people to care about something or participate in something.
I mean, I do think when it comes to mounts, ones that are Class-specific do tend to feel a LOT more “special”. I definitely took serious issue with the Archerus Charger’s model was reused for the mount for completing Shadowmourne (the actual name of the mount eludes me right now).
And I think a lot of players have voiced frustration when Faction-specific mounts are recolored and given cross-faction.
I suppose you’re right, in that I don’t personally draw that line there anymore, although if I’m being honest I almost think WoW struggles a bit having TOO MANY mounts (a wonderful “problem” to have, mind you).
As far as transmogs and such go… I personally wishes Class Sets were ACTUALLY class-exclusive. I firmly believe that is a a major reason the OG Judgement Armor (Pally T2) remains so iconic, even despite there being recolors available. And certainly, many players have fought for the return of Class Sets, particularly those truly based around the CLASS itself, like the MoP Challenge Mode sets.
Not that you should be restricted SOLELY to using Class-Armor, but I do believe it would help the game feel more immersive, and make each class feel more “special” to the player, if they did more things like that.
Legion was hardly perfect (in fact, it introduced many of the systems we hate today), but aside from some Class Halls looking cooler than others or being locked into specific weapons, people seem to almost universally have loved the focus on “Class Fantasy”.
Opening up ALL restrictions is basically the antithesis of that.
This is incorrect. The light has never destroyed undead bodies innately. It can if it’s weaponized but light in itself does not. Light will mend undead bodies but it HURTS. A LOT. So it’d be like catching yourself on fire but the fire is healing you as it burns you. You’d suffer unimaginable pain constantly but you wouldn’t die from this. None of the undead paladins died from being undead paladins.
I still don’t see how this breaks anything. The game has been around for 20 years or so. In that time, the horde and alliance races have intermingled with their allies. The Blood Elves, who figured out how to be paladins, could easily lend some of that power to the Forsaken, who used to be human and probably some of them paladins. A Tauren living in Orgrimmar could easily pick up the ways of a rogue while hanging out in the Drag. The Gnomes could create a device (like the thingie that makes non-gnomes able to train mechanicals) that allows them to emulate druidic powers. The lore is not stagnant. It’s not unchanging and it’s written and changed every day with every play. Once again, it’s just a game and you don’t have to play certain aspects of it yourself.
Nothing wrong with that concept… More believable than some of the stuff in WoW’s actual lore.
You seem to want to be the arbiter of what is “acceptable” as far as character concepts and think that everyone who wants to open up race/class combinations just doesn’t care about lore. We’ve told you over and over and over again that this isn’t true, and that we see that the freedom to come up with individual character concepts as a celebration of the world building.
One day, we will have a guild of All (HM)Tauren Demon Hunters…and call it the Illidairy. The joke will become realized, much like the cat can has cheeseburger!
I slightly disagree, with the Night Elf part. Night Elves have always been able to access the Arcane Magicks. I mean, Illidan was a Mage before he became whatever the heck he is now. And so was Malfurion, before he even knew what a Druid was, he was a Mage.
Not very many of them chose the Mage path, but they are there and it is lore accurate.
Orc Mages…I can see it. If they can become Warlocks, Mage is just a nicer Warlock…sometimes LOL.
While Tauren being Paladins makes sense. The fact that Trolls can’tbe Paladins as well is what does not make sense. If a race can be a warrior (which is all of them) and they can also be Priests, they should be Paladins as well. And a race that can be Warriors and Paladins, should be able to be a Priest as well.
Though Tauren being able to be Rogues is what gets me laughing HARD! HOW DOES ONE SHEAK WITH HOOVES? Engages Stealth ModeClack - Clack - Clack Stormwind Guard Hey, what’s that noise? Is somebody leading a cow or a horse around here somewhere?
Yeah, I don’t see them being stealthy for hoof reasons, as well as them being morally opposed to stealing and murdering people like a coward. They are more of a “If we must fight, fight in the light and show them your might” as opposed to “Sneaky, Poke, Poke, Stun lock for 9001 Seconds, target ded” like Rogues.
Another one that gets me is Human Hunters. How? How are they Hunters? A Hunter is supposed to be kindof close to nature as a Druid is. They become PARTNERS with the beasts of the wild. Traversing the wilds, becoming one with nature, tracking, stalking, killing, all with respect to the balance of nature. A hunter does not tear down forests, or simply hunt animals for sport. Any hunter who does, is a shameful shadow of Our legend.
Humans IRL and in-game, are rude, evil, and downright conniving as all heck. They tear down entire forests, stripping the world of precious resources, and giving almost nothing in return. They are NOT in touch with nature. Humans can NOT become a Druid, so why can they be a Hunter? It never made sense to me.
AND WHAT THE HECK ARE GNOMES EVEN IN THIS GAME FOR? Gnomes are only good as various balls for sports, foot stools, servants…the usual, ya know?
But seriously, Gnome HUNTERS? COME ON, GNOMES ARE WORSE THAN HUMANS WITH NATURE? WHY? Have you seen their starter area? They are so far from being in touch with nature, that it is genuinely comedic that Blizzard thinks they can be Hunters. Add to it that all pets they tame are about 3x their size…
I would be okay with Gnome Hunters, if they could also use their pets as mounts. Makes sense. They are tiny, and pretty much any animal they tame is basically a mount.
Do it. I dare you, Blizzard. I tripple-dog-dare you!
But in whole, I agree with you. Excluding the slight disagreement about some specifics, AKA semantics, this is a very accurate representation of what I think should happen.
It makes sense. Certain cultures do affect the way that the people of that culture think.
IRL and in game, culture is important. Lore is even more important.
Why even post a comment, if you are not going to read the whole thing? You are genuinely being counter productive. You added nothing to the discussion, and wasted your own time writing that. And you wasted the time of every person who bothered to read your comment. People, who do what you do? People like you? You are the problem.
That goes to everybody who does that. It is illogical, and a waste of time, a waste of space, and frankly just outright ignorant.
This is not a personal thing. No animosity towards you in specific, just the actions you took. And the actions of everybody who does this.
I think you are right, sadly. I do not genuinely think that the average player is that interested in the minutia of the lore and class fantasy, which is sad. An RPG is a game where you get to be who you want, and are passively agreeing to follow the lore whether you know it or not.
Though part of me is in the “If you don’t like Xclass/race combo…just don’t play it”.
Honestly, even though I want them to keep all the class/race lore/fantasy intact, but I also know that it really will not impact gameplay too dramatically. Honestly, who is really paying attention to a players race? 99% of the time, players are transmogged out in their “Giant Pauldrons of Me Being Giant And Big”, and they all just look huge…
The only race that really stick out are the Orcs, Worgen, and Tauren. Everybody else is essentially human with a twist. And even then, the only time you really worry about it is if you have Warmode on, or just regular bgs/arena.
I just want it to keep the lore and fantasy intact.
I am just quoting the first line, so you know I am responding to the whole thing.
You are correct, it does inspire imaginative creations…but this is a game with other players. Where we have to work together towards an objective. That means stats. And stats need to be balanced. If everybody can be everything, do you know how hard it is to balance the racial passives like that?
How many times did they “re-fix” the Troll regen passive? How many times have they “fixed” certain passives because they were causing people to be OP as heck?
Quite a few times.
Now imagine if every race could be every class…It would be a nightmare.
I already know what that will look like…
As for bits like this
I agree. What is your point though? Just because the game only calls us “Hero”, does not mean we are some far flinging Mechagnome Druid who is best friends with Illidan, and uses the Warglaives of Azinoth from time to time because Illidan is your bro…
You say it sparks imagination to do it your way…yet my imagination is already sparked.
My main? She has slain dragons, demons, abberations. She slaughtered the Fel Orcs of Hellfire Citadel. She braved Blackrock Mountain. She has slain many Horde members in valourus, glorious combat! She assisted Malfurion Stormrage in cleansing the Nightmare. She stood atop the spine of Deathwing. I climbed the frozen Storm Peaks. I delved into the secrets of time with the Bronze Dragon-flight. I am the Maw Walker. Slayer of Gul’dan (the Illidan KS was inevitable).
I AM JENKINS! AVENGER OF HYJAL, BANE OF THE FALLEN KING, BLACKWINGS BANE, CHAMPION OF THE FROZEN WASTES, CONQUEROR OF ORGRIMMAR, DEFENDER OF A SHATTERED WORLD, DELVER OF THE VAULTS, DESTROYER’S END, DRAGONSLAYER, FIRELORD, HUNTMASTER, PROTECTOR OF THE WEALD. WARDEN OF THE ASHEN VERDICT, THE IRON VANGUARD AND NIGHTFALL! I AM THE KINGSLAYING ASTRAL WALKER! I AM THE PATIENT SEEKER. I AM THE LIGHT OF DAWN!
I am might, and vigor. I AM LEGEND!
I already have the imagination, and I have backstories for every character.
And guess what? I did it all without needing every race being able to be every class. Been doing it for over a decade, and I will likely continue to do so without every race being every class.
