Why do people play on PVE servers?

Kudos to you, I could not agree more

That’s what bothers me.

My perspective on this subject is simple, PVP servers while fun overall to
on it is annoying when you are getting gang banged all the time by much
higher leveled and geared up players. I would absolutely love it if wow
implemented something like the ‘rvr lakes’ we had in Warhammer online
and pvp would only be by choice and ALWAYS had a goal of taking away
a castle from the other faction. World pvp in wow while fun sometimes
when the occasional 1v1 happens is still annoying when its 1vx number
of players. I will be on a pvp server because I like it but pve servers have
their own appeal as well.

The developers themselves pointed out that without some kind of reward system people tended to avoid world PvP. The towers in the Eastern Plaguelands, the dust collection in Silithus, all failed to draw people.

IMO world PvP is someone trying to feel like they have power over another player. That’s why most world PvP happens in zones at least 20 levels lower than the character. PvP in WoW is also more about gear than skill. That’s why PvPers kept crying about raiders having better gear than them. PvP servers all had extreme faction imbalances too, because people not only wanted a level and gear advantage, they wanted a numbers advantage too. Pathetic.

In a FPS, like Blizzard’s Overwatch, there is no gear or level difference. Plus you have to actually aim. It’s skill against skill alone. FPS is true PvP. Anything else is a waste of time.

Many people are much less interested in the faction war than others, not like this recent retail expansion has helped with that; and i’ve also heard that playing on a PvP server locks you to playing on one faction which is a huge dealbreaker.

Also PvP is DUMMY JANKY. But that’s just me.

I don’t like getting ganked while trying to level and enjoy the story of the game. PvE servers have the option of flagging for world pvp and/or entering battle grounds, but I am not forced to quest around someone higher lvl camping a zone, thus ruining what I personally consider fun.

Why do people play on pvp servers is the better question. On a pve server you can either do world stuff without worrying about being ganked, or you can turn pvp on. On a pvp server, you can only have pvp on.

PvP servers just limit choices- literally that’s all it does, is prevents you from turning pvp off.

Play Pve to avoid the cowards on pvp who play rogue and druid who stealth at the first sign of danger.

Because people like to do stuff in the world without being bothered. Some people value their time and don’t feel like being camped for half an hour. WoW although is literally called world of WARCRAFT has always been a PVE centric game.

I leveled up all my chars on PvP servers through Cata. But as I got older, I just wanted to chill and not be on my guard all the time. I can go to a BG whenever I want to pvp or I can roll alts on a PvP server if I want that experience. But mainly, I just like to chill now. I don’t see any “benefit” to open world PvE. In a game like EVE, PvP is built into it and there are specific reasons to do it, not in WOW.

I get where you’re coming from. I’ve played on both PvE and PvP servers. While I have some good memories of WPvP, the most fun I had PvPing were in the battlegrounds and capital city raids and PvE servers scratch that itch while allowing one to explore the lands unmolested.

This. Plus I work from home so I frequently have to afk and get stuff done. I can’t dedicate my attention as much these days which I think might be a better fit for a pvp server, where one needs to be on their guard more.

Things you can do uninterrupted on a PVE server that you can’t on a PVP server

1–I can fish peacefully

2–I can explore peacefully

3–I can quest peacefully

4–I can farm peacefully

None of these functions are written into Warcraft lore, but are necessary for game play in WoW, why go through the frustration of getting ganked constantly while doing them? You must not be right in the head if you enjoy ganking/getting ganked constantly.

The other thing about PVP server i’ve found is they’re usually 1 faction heavy, and as time goes on an even bigger gap btw factions will exist because players of the outnumbered faction end up getting frustrated and roll on a server where they outnumber the other faction to “get even”, and so the process is accelerated. No thank you, i’ll stay with my PVE server where options abound.

You don’t need to fathom why they would… the same way they don’t need to fathom why you would want to join a pvp server. It’s called personal preference. Stop worrying about what others like and focus on yourself.

My Vanilla and TBC experience was purely on PvP servers, and I know exactly what I’m missing out on by not playing on them, and I’m fine with it. I got the experience and war stories. People have an incredibly romanticized vision of wPvP and devolve into “us vs. them” way too quickly for topics like this to ever bring about a meaningful discussion.

At home i have to attend to:

90 year old dad
wife and son
1 bunny
1 kitty
160 Discus fish
feed 5 stray cats

so when i play wow, i need to have set targets to achiev efficiently.
if i roll on pvp server, i myself become another’s target and fail in mine.
it’s not that they kill you once, they kill you for days on end.
Your life is being controlled by another, usually in a group and as solo, i cannot win.
It’s about respecting circumstances. Back when i was single in 2005, i pvp’d for DAYS on end. Now i don’t want any of it.

World PVP can be a lot of fun. It can also be a huge pain in the axe. I like to be able to choose to participate or not.

Getting ganked over and over in Redridge while questing by a jackass level 60 rogue is not fun. Huge scale battles in TM/SS can be a lot of fun. So being able to choose when to PVP is much better IMO.

PVE servers will still have world PVP going on in places like TM/SS. The difference is everyone has a choice to participate or not.

Being ganked at low level and then camped so all I can do is watch my corpse get spit on and teabagged by children is not a service I’m willing to pay for.

I PvE…for my own sake.
