Why do people play on PVE servers?

You’re a co-founder of Fires of Heaven? Pretty dope, I remember you guys from EQ as well.

Some of us want to experience the PvE content unhindered, and have our PvP content when we want to do that content. Big argument for gamers with less time to spend each day to be able to clear content more quickly with that limited time. Getting ganked/camped can really slow down progress.

Now, that being said, PvP servers can also add everything you mentioned and can lead to amazing different experiences. I’m personally torn. I want to get through content without being griefed, but I also very fondly remember a rivalry from Vanilla - I got ganked while afk, and ran across the ganker a few times over the next year. We’d always fight. It was pretty awesome.

I haven’t decided, but the appeal of playing on PvE is as strong for those players as is the desire to play on PvP servers for those players. Just different play styles - neither is right or wrong, but each is best suited for a type of player.

I’ve never really been a fan of server types. The game is called is World of Warcraft after all, so to me the fact that there was any way for people to opt out of fighting other players out in the WORLD seemed silly and makes the world a little less immersive from the start. There should be a few safe zones/sanctuaries of course, but in general I believe you should have to be grouped most of the time in an MMO or you’ll be at a severe disadvantage and potentially risking your “life”.

I understand not everyone feels that way though and that’s completely fine. Play however you want. I do wish they would have made PVP, RP, and RP-PVP realms only though. You don’t have to Roleplay on RP realms to enjoy them and you can do all the things you can do there on a PVE/Normal server except you get in trouble for breaking people’s immersion and naming your character after some dumb meme(in theory at least if not always in practice).

Maybe I just don’t understand what target audience Blizzard is trying to appeal to with PVE servers, but to me if you’re not really that invested in Multiplayer or community driven RPG games and you’re just a casual fantasy fan then your time might be better spent playing a single player game or reading Lord of the Rings. MMO’s have always been for a niche audience and the more you try to appeal to people with different types of interests the more you alienate your core audience… and 15 years later you have a theme park rpg simulator instead of an mmorpg.

because I like to play the game…

so to you, there is only one type of human interaction, and that is fight to the death… personally I prefer to get along with other players. To kill simply because you can isn’t a good reason to kill. \//,

For sure. I just honestly don’t see the point of being on a PvP server if you’re not actively trying to kill people.

I agree. Which is why i play on PVE servers now. I also have the option to do battlegrounds or flag myself as i choose.

I’m a father with a professional job. I get roughly 2 hours a night to play Mon-Thurs. The last thing I want to do with that time is get corpse camped by some bored high level rogue.

That’s why I am going to play PvE. When I want my PvP, I’ll just do BGs.

For some people, PvE is the only content available in their stay in WoW. PvP hinders that experience, such as getting World buffs and dying on the way to the raid instance.

Plus, we may be able to see streamers only flock to PvE servers because they want to showcase their channel while avoiding griefing from stream snipers.

This is wildly incorrect, at least back in Vanilla (and on private servers). Stranglethorn Vale is a constant warzone. Good luck getting the Nesingwary quests done with bored level 60s camping constantly. It’s a roll of the dice any given day on which faction has control of the area.

You definitely never played on a pvp server in vanilla. You can pvp on a pve server if you want to, but you don’t have to.

Personally for me it has nothing to do with the pvp itself. Sometimes you just want to relax and work on professions or do some quests but not be constantly interrupted and getting ganked. Can just avoid the frustration entirely by playing on a pve server, and still get to pvp when you want.

I trolled to a pop server a few months after Cataclysm dropped. At first, I really liked it. Getting into fights with others, sometimes winning, others losing, and occasionally the fight would turn into a large brawl. However, it was always fun. Admittedly, ganking and getting ganked happened, but anyone who wasn’t a sperg would leave you alone after a kill or two.

I ended up quitting around a year later, and returned in February 2017, and things had changed. I rarely saw alliance players anymore, and hoodies ran around in swarms. Based on forum posts. It sounded like a lot of Alliance guilds transferred of the server around legion launch. After a few months of playing again, I could see why. Anywhere I went, if there were hordes, they’d hang up and camp me, for hours on a couple occasions. When this happened I literally just had to log, because I couldn’t defend myself, or complete any quests. It’s just so frustrating that a few months later, in the summer, I took a break, and considered quitting again. It was after I came back that I started playing this here toon again, and was finally able to enjoy the game once more.

I’m not sure if I’ll roll on a pop server in classic. I know one friend I’m rolling with is against it, but I’m not decided yet, though I am leaning the other way at the minute.

Simple… they’re carebears and need a safe space to play without the possibility of being attacked by a enemy player. This is something that was established way back in Vanilla lol

Nah, just not in the mood to give some bored, cowardly rogue the satisfaction of a kill when they wait to jump out at someone with 25% and no mana. Those are the real carebears imo, the ones who can’t handle a fair fight.

I’ll be more than glad to fight anyone in the battlegrounds or in front of a city in a duel, where the real PvP happens.

I have np with open world pvp if it’s at least somewhat a fair fight. The problem is that 90% of the time it’s just you getting ambushed by high level gankers. How in the hell is that ‘fun’?

It’s not. It’s totally pointless and it only feeds a few egos.

If PvP servers were epic LotR style battles with faction armies charging at each other on an open battlefield, that’d be much different. But pretty much 100% of the time it’s a bunch of opportunists waiting for you to be weakened by a fight to charge in and score an easy kill.

So many people enjoy fair and balanced world pvp that virtually every single pvp server pre-merges had 1 faction significantly outnumbering the other.

There is no reasom to think the classic servers wont devolve into the same thing.

I play PvE so I don’ have to run into people like you.

This is the result of arena, and rated bgs. Its more efficient for everyone to be in the same faction.

But great for classic, no arena, or rated bgs.
