Why do people compare ff14 and wow for system’s differences?

It’s kind of ironic that people are comparing FF14 to WoW and not the other “WoW” killers that rose and fell in the past.

I hardly hear anyone even bringing up GW2, SWTOR, etc.

ESO and GW2 are still out there pumping away, but I think ESO is the only one that gets regular expansions, think they JUST announced the next GW2 expansion and the last one came out in 2017?

SWTOR is still kicking, i guess, but it’s mostly solo players now IIRC, great solo game, bad mmo.

people talk about FFXIV because it’s actively growing.

Well, not really. It makes sense since it didn’t rise and fall like those others.

It’s relevant.

Instead it fell and then rose lol.

Well tbf it fell a LONG time ago, and they did a bang up job integrating that into the lore.

10 years ago now, but man 1.0 was bad.

Yoshi-p not only saved that game, he may have saved square, high hopes for FFXVI

My wife loves 14 a lot more than I do - we got a house and she enjoys crafting and collecting glams.

I’m less interested in those aspects, although glams are important to me as well. The lack of tangible power progression is really what makes it hard for me to enjoy.

Yea, i think they worry about ilvl bloat but uh… i need more than 1 weapon dmg thanks.

Having to jump through hoops to actually see what dps you’re doing doesn’t help either.

I’d be happy if they integrated systems into the game so you needed to actually go out and kill stuff (like WoW’s WQs) and I’m not talking about FATES that again sync you down and don’t reward you with anything meaningful.

Serious question, is there such a thing as an MMO that’s been up and running for a few years that doesn’t have a bunch of cruft that’s built up? Seems almost like an unavoidable consequence of expansions as they’re typically executed.

TBF FFXIV crap build up got so bad that they had to try and fix it this last patch. They cut like TWENTY HOURS of crap out and it’s still not enough.

Jeez, that’s crazy.

I’d really like to see an MMO that takes a more lateral or horizontal approach to at least half of its expansions. “Stack more on top” starts getting top-heavy and unsustainable real quick.

GW2 does that IIRC

Oh ESO also does a lot more “expanding” without stacking, they haven’t ever increased the maximum level, just the maximum extra point rank thingy and 160 is still the maximum ilvl for gear

ESO is great about this. Every piece of content is relevant at every level. They keep old gear sets coming back around and becoming relevant again here and there as well. Some of the earliest craftable items are still some of the best starter-gear for working on getting your BiS.

Of course, it’s also got a lot it does wrong. But it’s good about that one thing, at least.

Depends on how you look at it, I prefer games with linear gear progression.

Not really relevant to the fellow asking about horizontal approaches to expansions. I wasn’t speaking to their gearing system, or anything else about the game tbh.

I mean, you were literally talking about how the gear that they released with the base game is still useful lol.

While they have, it’s not a method to level. The first time through with your main job is fast due to all that experience gains, but it feels much slower with your alts due to not getting that storyline boost. The story is good, but I wish my alts could get XP, otherwise it isn’t worth while 99% of the time.

I did hope that it would give XP originally when they announced it, just as an extra thing to do outside PotD/HoH and the duty finder.

Right … but your search for linear gear progression is not relevant to the conversation we were having about horizontal expansions. I’m not sure what you think you’re arguing with me about?
