The simple truth is, as long as the number of subscriptions actively playing classic outweighs the cost to maintain (noting that infrastructure can be sold/redistributed and support staff can be reduced) - then classic is profitable and therefore will continue to succeed.
If/When there comes a time where it is no longer profitable to support such an endeavor, then classic will fail (or change in some way).
There will only be ongoing costs for maintenance and support, no development costs. This makes the cost analysis very easy to predict with knowing how many different paying accounts are playing classic.
This means retail will continue to have the ânew and changing story lineâ (because believe it or not, some players like new challenges and changes to a game) while classic will remain as is.
What is yet to be seen (and which seems likely sometime down the road) if TBC, Wrath, etc. will get their own servers/classic version. This is about the only âchange to classicâ I could see coming, and its also likely that they leave up âvanilla classicâ servers for the players who just prefer the original. Again, that will be determined by the trend in active subs playing.
Its all about the subs and the money. If it takes relatively little to produce and the return on investment is easily tracked - its a simple equation.
Out of all of your points this is the only one that I somewhat agree with. They do not need to pay for new WoW Classic Ad spots. They can just buy ad space on YouTube and reuse the old celeb spots. âIâm Mr. T and Iâm a Night Elf Mohawk!â They really should have done this all summer long.
Vanilla was buggyâŚ
Vanilla launched in NovemberâŚ
Vanilla did not âmentionâ servers any more than Classic hasâŚ
You are literally posting in a Classic Forum⌠makes me think you are a trollâŚ
Vanilla was buggyâŚ
They have WORK to do to make the animations right. However not one single Classic/Vanilla fan is not going to play Classic because animations are wrong. In fact there is a very LARGE community of players who want Vanilla Game/Reward Philosophy and Modern Graphics.
Your list of reasons why Classic will fail looks a bit thin. Aside from repetition, all of your concerns feel as though they will be addressed prior to launch date. âbuggyâ is a tough one to prove, given you havenât played the final product (sounds more like a hope for you, rather than an expectation). No mention of servers? You donât think Blizz will mention something about servers prior to launch? I suppose you are right in that, as you currently see it, if it were released now (when it is obviously not quite ready) it might fail, and there are CURRENTLY no server list, etc. But you seem awfully unable to look past, say, tomorrow morningâŚ
Regarding subscription I was initially surprised when they put Classic up for free with current sub, but nothing is for free. It seems pretty clear that they have made the decision to bring back classic (despite some uncool language to the contrary in the past) in order to solidify subscriptions. That means by definition that retail interest is waning.
You will find that the money that Blizzard will make on Classic is currently hidden among the people that currently hold a sub, but wouldnât in a year if not for Classic.
Your thread should have been titled âI am hoping Classic will fail, but this is all Iâve gotâ.
It was buggy upon original release. And I donât believe there were any cash shops? Just the sub. And people are resuming just to play classic. Itâs all over the forums. Sorry, this argument is a fail. I assume you are a retailer who wonât be playing? Fine by me.
Dumpster fire? Well it was the most popular MMO of all time (still is?). Anyhow, a few months after launch, they had to roll out all servers at once instead of a slow roll (source: Blizzard documentary, Blizzard developer).
You wonât. I wonât be using this character as an avatar by that stage, because Iâll be playing Classic, and likely neither will you. So even if you intentionally set a reminder, Iâd never see or care.
Why are you here on the Classic forums then? You surely arenât going to be playing on Classic with the large community that will be enjoying it, will you?
Please make sure you post the server and character name(s) you are using if you do decide to roll on Classic so that many here can get you added to our ignore/ban list for guild recruitment and content advancement purposes.
I donât believe any self respecting guild would want a toxic player of this caliber among their ranks.
The funny thing was this was originally in General Discussion before getting tossed into Classic where it wasnât wanted or needed. He probably doesnât intend to play Classic and was just trying to rain on Classicâs parade⌠from General Discussion.
