FF14 sucks dog. Have fun over there with your 30 minute GCD, degen anime art style, junky vestigial pvp, and boring, overly easy PvE game. FF14 is a great game for noobs, you got that much right
There is many variables. One is MMO’s are a dying breed. Another is the toxic community this game has to newbies. Another is people aren’t interested in the longevity of video games.
Mobile market has CONSUMED future gamers to instant gratification with a credit card. MMO’s don’t fit on that narrative.
Of course they do. Especially on RP-servers.
Did you just refer to FFXIV as being new player friendly? lol… Community wise, yeah for sure.
But the game? Hell no. That slog fest of a story the first chunk of levels is terrible. 5% of the time you are actually doing something, the other 95% of the time you are running back and forth between NPCs and listening to them talk.
So head on back over there.
The real reason is no Gnome Paladins (yet)
I mean, 'cmon, let’s be real here, everyone wants a little adventure.
I think you are grossly overestimating how much new players know about the game, even on RP servers.
FOMO might be a small part of it, but the bigger issue IMO is how truly awful this community is to players trying to learn.
because is old, and looks old, when new games for consoles comes out, they look amazing! and wow has been losing players or to ff14 or to gw2 after the bad decision, the harassment inside the company etc…
is the same old developer that they think on themself playing the game and not understanding the new generations that have time to play the game. now every one want instant gratification… no one want to run same content 100 times for one piece of gear… wow doesn’t respect the player
Word got around the office that I took vacation to play DF. The top two comments I’ve heard are–
- People still play that game?
- The game is too slow
WoW isn’t attracting or keeping new players because of the stigma associated w it and because newer games give more of a dopamine hit.

Oh that’s what it is, is it? Your pet issue is why there isn’t a steady influx of new players?
Young people are less social. MMOs can only survive the future if they cater to soloers.
The issue is content balance. Effectively, everything is too hard, and too unpredictable. People can get over cosmetics, people can get over graphics, these are minor issues in general. What has to happen for the game to succeed in this market, is the game has to play well, fundamentally, at face value.
Here’s the WoW quit moment: Freehold. You get access to dungeons as a new player, and you go to Ataldazar. That is an amazing dungeon, you can do it no problem with all 5 people being new players. It is balanced correctly for just using the most bare bones level 10 kits.
The very next dungeon is Freehold. This dungeon is balanced blatantly incorrectly. Every damage source is stifling and instant wipe capable. Every single source, from the lowest bar patron to the bosses, they can just eviscerate a level 15 group like they don’t exist. It has never once been adjusted in the last 3 years. It is simply a brick wall. You hit the difficulty brick wall in WoW in a level 15 normal dungeon.
These wild swings in balance are present in every strata of the game and it is the core problem to retention. People are toxic to new players because they have to be to clear the content in a reasonable amount of time. If you want to finish a leveling freehold, you basically have to vote kick anyone under level 50 or bully them into leaving. There’s no reason for it.

Meanwhile in the same breath
“LOL TIME GATED ITEMS ARE NEVER COMING BACK! YOU SHOULD HAVE PLAYED WOW 10 YEARS AGO YOU PEASANTS!”
You know brand new players dont care about a random transmog that they dont know about.
Brand new players play to level 10 get confused on where to go and quit lol. You are reaching hard
New player retention should be about helping them understand and play the game while also bringing them into community groups like guilds or other end game communities.
1 random transmog or mount out of hundreds or thousands is minimal if null
FFXIV has the worst track record for new player retention. Once the MSQ is eaten away you realize it’s the same grind as WoW with less.
New players to WoW are too overwhelmed to care about your 2 polygon oatmeal textured CM gear.
no matter what they do itll be rough getting brand new players.
game is old and ppl feel like they cant catch up to the experience others have.
same problem cs:go/runescape have
*were probably stuck with a cycle of returning old players instead.
This game and it’s community ARE NOT NEW PLAYER FRIENDLY.
Even as I say this, someone who has years of experience will say how braindead easy this game is and not understand that it should be easy if you played since vanilla.
Everyone always assumes whoever they see is just an alt of some experienced player so clearly if they haven’t mastered their class and know all skips they are just scrubs.
hell, even even I started I was using stamina gear as a DPS because I thought my health going up meant I was stronger.
New Players the, truly new, would have no idea of items they cannot get anymore. Nobody cries about the items that were removed from Scholomance when we went into cata, yet there is a reason for these posts.
Yet, here we are time and time again. I would love for the WoD challenge dungeon loot to make a return, but here we are still waiting, but I’m not coming to the forums all day , every day, to complain about it.
It’s odd, it come sin waves when the flavor of the week complaint is either:
Stop catering to the 1%!
Blizzard hates casuals!
Why can’t I get X item anymore?
More REPRESENTATION!!
Story sucks
my class sucks
X class needs a nerf now!
The modern internet generation is predictable beyond words. In fact someone will respond to this saying “You’re whining too.”

“LOL TIME GATED ITEMS ARE NEVER COMING BACK! YOU SHOULD HAVE PLAYED WOW 10 YEARS AGO YOU PEASANTS!”
This is why FFXIV will always be more new player friendly than WoW. Ontop of other reasons but this is the icing on the cake.
What?
“I was having fun until I saw this dude with a flail/as a sparkly cat/as a swole bear thing in my first dungeon.” is your strawman?
Pretty sure the reason most people quit are
- Unwelcoming experience with the playerbase.
- Overwhelmed by either
A. Systems - hopefully this will improve going forward
B. Experience Flow (Where do I go next), especially when being brought in by more experienced players (“don’t go there, go here” where “here” has a requirement the veteran player forgot, for example) -DF could be a great moment to revamp leveling again, BfA questing is GREAT to start, but the dungeons are not.
I can’t hear you over the sound of hand of A’Dal…
You’re whining too AND wrong. You forgot the “tank good dps bad!” jerkfest, as well as the “healer good dps bad” wanktrain
