PvP server is the truest form of the game in my opinion.
The uncertainty or actual living breathing world made up off players.
Anything can happen type game play.

@Kaiva I’m not saying that PvP servers are bad, I’m not saying that PvP isn’t a decent chunk of the fun in this game, I am just saying that leveling on a PvP server is AWFUL. Roaming bands of peer-level enemies wouldn’t be so bad. It is when they almost inevitably call in a 60 to make their ganking ‘fun’.
It’s fine that some people call it fun, no problem. I just want it to be clear that ‘most’ people going to PvP servers is nonsense, and that no one is missing out on anything by going to PvE servers. I remember very well the epic Tarren Mill sieges between 40+ groups of both factions. It was a swell time.
Wouldn’t want to level flagged though.
It’s fun and it gives you stuff do to while you’re on downtime. I always went on long gank fests during raid downtime and i still had a ton of fun playing the game when I wasn’t doing anything endgame.
Good point. I guess it’s just what you’re used to. I’ve always played on a PvP server and PvP servers historically have been popular. I’m going to play on what I’m used to. While I’ve been ganked, it’s just never ruined my day.
I think that’s what it all really boils down to (the topic of this thread). People are going to play what they are used to. And the majority of vanilla servers over the last 15 years have been pvp. So the majority of players will stick with what they are used to.
Worry not. When given a choice, there will be plenty of people who choose PvE. PvP is popular, always has been… but they really haven;t had a game to PvP in for many years… Blizzard saw to that.
It’s back now… and those who have been thirsting for it are very excited.
I am not one of those people. While the initial leveling provides a lot of fun, fair, PvP… anytime after that it ends up being mostly higher levels ganking lower levels.
If you want to log in to level, and spend an hour or two making no progress while some rogue get’s his jollies from preventing another human from having fun… then a PvP server is for you.
If you would rather be able to level unhindered, then queue up for BGs in fair fights. Or flag PvP when you feel there is fair open world PvP to be had… then PvE is for you.
And now all those PVP streamers are hiding inside Scarlet Monastery instead of leveling in open zones like STV. They might as well have picked the PVE server then.
I simply could not play on a PvE server. For me the conflict between Horde / Alliance is a core part of the game.
Most people aren’t, they are just saying they are so they sound like B/A pvpers. It will most likely turn out the same as it originally did… many people will roll there because of all these posts or whatever other info they got. Then they will start getting ganked or corpse camped and get fed up and transfer to pve or reroll altogether.
Being into PVP and being into PVP servers are not always mutually compatible.
I agree with the points made here I do and I see the reasons why people choose to be on both server types.
For me personally I just want to be out in the world without being bothered. This is my only sole reason to play on a PvE server.
For when I want to PvP I’ll queue a BG and it’ll be a fair fight and don’t get me wrong… I love PvP.
anyone who plans on playing these servers for a lengthy period of time should highly consider pvp server.
Example: over in Everquest they have a server locked in a specific era. over time i have developed 5 (yes 5) completely and utterly BiS toons.
There is no PvP option and once you get into this situation you feel completely stalemated. PvP would be a continuous motivator to play a character even well after there aren’t any upgrades or advancements for it.
And before the “bUt It TaKeS sO lOnG tO LeVeL iN CaSsIc” just stop. just…stop.
In my entire time playing WoW, I’ve been actually “camped”, maybe half a dozen times-ish. What I remember most, is players coming for the sake of wpvp. Being a part of the players coming to “rescue” someone, is a rush you just never forget. Being on the receiving end of a rescue, is another thing you don’t forget.
Not once ever was anyone “frothing at the mouth”.
You have your experience. I have mine. And I’ll definitely be choosing RP-PvP if it’s an option. PvP if it’s not.
I understand that feeling very well. The pride at having saved the day from a seemingly unstoppable enemy advance, the relief and gratitude towards those that save your butt from the fire, I appreciate such things!
The ‘frothing at the mouth’ comment is not directed at everyone on a PvP server. It is directed towards those that enjoy the suffering and relish the inconvenience they cause. They proceed to corpse-camp with /spit and /laugh and disappear when they feel outmatched, only to ambush you when they feel they have the advantage.
That’s who I was referring to. Those and the kind of people who flex all over their keyboards on the forums.
Personally I enjoy being able to have the ability to gank those types. Nothing like mcing someone you have experience with and dumping them into the blackrock lava.
And are then camped. Typically, they just log. Almost invariably. I get a sense of satisfaction thinking how they must feel…the “cowardly slinking away log-out”. I hope it festers in each and every one of them.
Ganks are gonna happen. I have no clue how many times I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Night Elf Hunter on the road south of Tarren Mills…and I’m dead. Didn’t camp me tho.
Hopefully I killed him later in the Basin.
And this difference of opinion is why I’m so glad there are both PvE and PvP servers. They are camped? By whom? Others? Those they were camping and griefing?
Cause I sure as hell don’t want to waste my time camping people, killing them everytime they try to rez and run. Blech! Not my style. I’m all for defending myself from attack or helping others, but not stooping to their level or ‘teaching them a lesson’.
I hope you have all the experience you expect when Classic releases! I’m pretty sure I will!
a stealth class managed to avoid combat?
how surprising!
Typically by the rescuers, and the rescuee. I don’t recall any time someone wasn’t willing to “return the favor”. Particularly so if that camper was a nuisance.
I’ll be on PvE, because let’s be honest, I lack the PvP skills to have any fun on a PvP server. It’s too much work getting good at PvP. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
I could tell you would play a PvE server
