Well that was a nice thought out post but it changes nothing about what I said. We have been on the ground for a few months in fact we have been on the ground for five months. I know its hard for some people to understand but the simple fact is people enjoy flight for more then convenience, they actual enjoy flying around and enjoying the game from the air.
Also i have no clue what you are talking about in your first paragraph, i never said anything about anger or who does or doesn’t enjoy flight. Plus where did i say anything about hate and that no flying makes me want to unsub so nice reaching there.
I didn’t have epic flying when the Netherwing area was patched. My friend lent me 800g so I could buy that 5000g license. Then I was so broke, I couldn’t afford an epic flier…had to vendor all my heal gear and clean out my bank for that. Then as we did the quests and I farmed everything else, I paid him back in 4 days and totally brokeass again. Made millions since then but I remember the poor times. My alts have to quest enough to level and make their own gold for their flying licenses.
We had control of our gold - just took a super long time to earn enough to do anything. Teaches you the value of game gold - I rarely spend it nowadays.
I got the 60% flight a few weeks after hitting 70, but rarely used it unless I was going somewhere I couldn’t get to without flying there. Mainly because 60% flight was significantly slower than 100% ground.
Which is the real issue here… Players want to get from place to place faster. Hiding “I want to get there faster” behind “but I wants to explore!” is fairly disingenuous. One guy in this thread (that I noticed, it may be more…I just didn’t see) admitted that getting around faster is why they want flight right away.
That’s great for him. Heck, I like to get places quickly too. I just don’t think we’re as “tied” to “time wasting” as is being claimed, even by that guy.
It took significantly longer to get “epic”, or fast, flight.
And… It can’t have been that huge of an anomaly for players to not be able to afford even slow flight or the devs wouldn’t have felt the need to give us a way to rent a flying mount. I’d say that while “most” probably could afford at least basic flight, many (probably 20% or more…which would be a significant enough amount to warrant a rental option, in my opinion, which is pretty garbage anyway) couldn’t afford it. I knew a few who couldn’t. I knew more who could.
We told the devs a long time ago that we wanted flying at max level or shortly after hitting max level. The sub count has been dropping ever since they first ignored this request. I can only conclude at this point that Blizzard wants WoW to fail so they can work on the next big project. This seems like a reasonable conclusion given just how perfectly BFA is designed to make you hate WoW and how they have made gold unavailable.
I don’t disagree. I want to fly too. And I do find that the ground content in BfA has gotten a bit stale (probably why I’m leveling alts for the first time in several expansions). But…
I think that is because the ground content isn’t as lucrative as it was in Legion, or even Warlords. I find myself going back to Legion to do WQs because I get more gold from them. There are more just on the map, plus a champion that adds 150g per WQ…so I tend to do them all; generally there are 20+ WQs between all zones; at just 20 that’s 3k gold more than I could ever hope to get just from doing the same thing in BfA.
I think the level of reward is lacking in the “everyday” content this expansion, for me anyway.
But even in Legion, where I can fly, I find myself just riding my ground mount to the next WQ unless it’s really far away. Sometimes I just walk there (my VE needs to keep her girl-ish figure after all).
Again, just my opinion…which isn’t worth much. Folks would be complaining either way, some of them at least.
Well I am one of the people saying “I want to explore better/more” but I am also not using it to hide “I want to move around faster.” And I have to respectfully disagree with you on this point in general. I haven’t really seen anybody say they want exploration and that speed doesn’t matter. But I have seen a lot of people citing exploration as a reason, in addition to getting to places faster.
I will agree with this. Especially considering back then Blizzard designed the end game grind / content around flight. As others have mentioned, there were places and objectives you simply could not get to or achieve without flight. So it does not make sense that Blizzard would have heavily gated flight behind some grind-wall in general (which lines up with my memory).
But you are right; it was significantly harder to pony up the cash for epic flying, and I do also remember it taking significantly longer for myself and others in my realm to get that.
And yeah, you are right; in practice, a fair chunk of the time I kept using my ground mount, as it was faster to use than the slower flying. But also note that back then, Blizzard did not do shady crap like have high density / packed mobs with fast respawn rates every 20y for you to aggro and fight 100 times over trying to get even down the road, like they do today (and for a while now).
I only really ever want flying when it’s time to go herbing. Outside of that it’s easy to get where I want to go in Zandalar/Kul’Tiras. Besides, no one will be able to convince me that warmode will be more fun with flying.
That’s the thing, though. Sure you could put the gold together to fly fast…if you gave up everything else and went broke for weeks and weeks on end, or borrowed and stayed broke longer to pay your buddies back quickly.
I didn’t do that. I earned the gold on my own and it took a long time. I still had only 60% flight when Wrath came out so I bought the Cold Weather Flying before fast flying (keep in mind I didn’t start playing until mid-BC, so I was probably behind you to begin with). It was mid-Wrath before I had fast flying and didn’t care back then…I just used ground mounts and walked.
Today I can’t stand slow flight. I was irritated this past weekend when my DI Dwarf hit 60 because I had to wait another 10 levels to fly at a decent speed. 60% sucks s!
This doesn’t make sense. Having your current project fail does not inspire confidence in investors’ eyes that they should be throwing money at you for another project. If Blizzard really wanted to transition away from WoW to another big project, the best thing they with WoW is to release a “final chapter” type expansion where all major plot lines are tied up in a reasonable way. Really listen to players and nail down everything they are asking for. Double down on good story closing content. Really double down on balancing classes and making things engaging and re-playable.
In short, make every effort possible to end the game on a high note, not a low note as you suggest.
This will keep players around for a while. This would probably even bring more players back. And it will also give investors confidence to invest money in their next project.
Hey but that is flying and I am not seeing the content the way the art team wants me too. Why not have Ion come to my house strap me to a chair and tape open my eye lids open until I see all the great content!
BC, WotLK, Cata and MoP also had a lot of content that was locked behind the necessity TO fly. Draenor, Legion, and BFA do not. Flying in these expansions is for ease of play style and convenience for many players, not a requirement to complete things.
