What limitations for Addons?

They are not turning addons off. If at anytime they had a headache from addons, it was when the API was way less restrictive and addons were basically bots. They would have disabled them back then.
Addons were a new and exciting feature for me coming to wow and im sure a lot of others as well.
Games like UO allowed very few 3rd party apps. One they sold and the other was a free map enhancement. That’s it.
I’d say addon and customization is a bigger draw than you think. Either way. They have been allowed the entire time and yes some of us will walk if they are removed. The UI has always been bad. It’s still bad. At least we can move stuff but the skins…bleh

Actually they temporarily banned the addon, fixed the exploit then sued them.

Muh  just fluttered mom!

Well, if they do completely lock down aspects of the API to that extent, the players wanting things taken too far with regards to addons will have shoulder some of the blame.

I just dont understand these demands for info though. The changes arent coming until a few weeks after release, which says blizzard is still looking at the issue.

They simply dont have the information people are demading.

I wouldn’t worry about RP addons or any other addons, really. The creator of ClassicLFG has been in touch with Blizzard CMs and it will likely still mostly work. It’s likely that the blue response yesterday was just to appease the forums.

Disclaimer: I couldn’t care less about the LFG addon. I will be running with a group of people and won’t have to PuG until months from now when I level my “me time” alt. The LFG addon can die for all I care. My only concern with this whole situation is making sure RP addons continue to exist.

That’s why OP is asking this very question. I’m no dev but from my understanding these addons are made to work within blizz API framework. This LFG addon that is being “limited” uses calls for its features that other addons may use. If blizz breaks those calls to break the LFG addon. It effectively breaks those other addons that use those calls. That’s a big change.

You’ve lost the forest for the trees…

Point still stands that they don’t need to tell the community anything about the technical requirements for add-ons.

Also, they’re not banning all add-ons, they’re banning the ones that seek to automate player actions or bypass social interaction. Case in point, do you remember having an add-on that formed groups for you? Me either.

Seems unlikely they will. Blue post was probably just to calm down the antsy forums. When people can actually play the game in a little over a day, everyone is going to forget about it.

I was worried about my RP addons yesterday and earlier today but after actually getting informed I’m not really concerned at all.

Edit: And hey, even if they do go nuclear on addons, what can you do? It’s Blizzard’s world, we’re all just living in it.

How disingenuous of you. I can link about 20+ posts from you where you were only upset because the LFG addon was being nerfed/disabled.

I’m sorry, but after the tantrums you threw yesterday, i have trouble sympathising with you or your point of view. You’re just clinging to anything that might get your precious LFG addon back.

How about… just don’t make an addon you know will make at least 50% of the community mad. Sometimes it’s common sense.

The developer of that addon knew what he was doing. He knew he would make a lot of people unhappy. And I’m glad his hard work is going down the drain.

Oh i share his fears on how they fix it, they do not have a great track record with this sort of thing, recent changes show that.

You may want to add this to the op. Not sure if it’s been brought up or not.

Seems like the pendulum has swung and now it’s fear-mongering that all addons are being killed. Everyone needs to just take a deep breath and chill. We’ll all be playing the game we love in a couple of days.

This doesnt help whatsoever.

Blizzard stated they were in communication with author, and they saw it as an innocently created issue. It wasnt the authors intent to cause a sheetstorm or the resulting changes to the API.

If anything, id imagine he’s feeling gutted right now.

I understand the author didn’t create the addon just to troll. But he knew it would make a lot of people unhappy and he did it anyway.

After the tantrums from him though ?

Yeah, not buying it.

It won’t mostly still work. The blue post said straight up that if they wanted group finder in classic that they wouldn’t have removed it from the vanilla client.

Your views of what “seems like” are beyond conjecture. They are baseless.

His concerns are perfectly valid whether or not you think he made tantrums.

Considering the addon developer has actually been in contact with Blizzard employees (community managers, not random GMs), I’ll take his word over yours.

“I will still be able to provide most of the functionality it does now.”

I just read his post and I’m not about to trust someone with an anime girl as his avatar. Hopefully the blue post was honest and Blizz stays true to their word.

The anime guy could just be saving face.
