What happened to Nathanos Blightcaller?

I only recently resubbed. Played just a bit into shadowlands, but decided to take some time away from wow shortly in. I never got that far into the story of Shadowlands. However I remember Nathanos Blightcaller saying that he would be by Sylvanas’s side when he was killed. But I’ve looked at the story for Shadowlands. No sign of his appearance. I was thinking he would be a raid boss or something like that, but I don’t even see him mentioned at all in the story. So what happened to him?

He was beheaded by Tyrande pre-shadowlands

He is a mawrat now I suppose.

He died and then was never seen again

I meant after that. I assume he was sent to the Shadowlands somewhere like everyone else was? But I see no sign of him in the Shadowlands.

The last time Nathanos was even alluded to was in 9.1, Chains of Domination in a cutscene battle between Tyrande and Sylvanas. He was never mentioned by Sylvanas before or after that cutscene, and it’s never been confirmed what happened to him.

For your reference, here is the YT link to the cutscene:

Jailer kept news of his death from Sylvanas and it is implied that she was going to search for him in the Maw during her time there sending souls back to the Arbiter.

Bad story writing I guess

Last we heard the Jailor had his soul, so either hes sitting in a nice torture cage somewhere or he was disassembled and turned into random maw soldier #93746

Last I knew, Nathanos was in the maw as a spirit, waiting for Sylvanas to come get him so they can be reunited.

Sylvanas is in the maw, retrieving spirits for the NEs as a kind of penance but she’s also looking for Nathanos.
For all I know, she may have found him by now.

He died and thank Metzen, because he was a pointless, obnoxious edgelord.

I like to think he got turned into a Shadowlands birdcage.

More than he deserves

Hey now, I resemble that remark

He wasn’t a well received character or popular among the majority of players, so story wise Blizzard unceremoniously sent him off into the Maw while the Arbiter was broken/dead. Sylvanas’ punishment is to find all the souls that wrongly were sent to the Maw, and she’s looking for Nathanos too. Whether that means we ever see him again or not, remains to be seen.

I personally liked Nathanos. There’s a thread from last week that covers all these bases.

Ah. My apologies. I didn’t realize one was created so recently. This is very informative though.

Sounds like a horrible, but possibly deserved fate.

Seems like his plan kinda backfire then. I think he might have thought he would be like how Sylvanas was alongside the Jailor.

Wasn’t he the then lead writer’s pet character? And a personal stand in, in game?

Or am I remembering this wrong?

I do know he wasn’t well liked. He didn’t really do much and was suddenly Sylvanas’ ‘true love’ (or implied to be) which the player base loathed.

His look wasn’t particularly exciting either - if you have to be an undead spooky boy? Be a plate wearing, death Knight bad a** covered in shadow with an epic backstory and motivation (see ‘Lord Soth’ of Dragonlance fame for an example). Not a random guy with a moustache who simps hard.

We killed him in Eastern Plaguelands in Vanilla for a shield.

Nathanos has been in the game since vanilla, a quest npc in EPL and later the hunter trainer in Cata era Undercity iirc. I think people were more or less just uninterested with that retcon and whole romance story for Sylvanas, not to mention Nathanos was what many would classify as a simp. Steve Denuser did write the short story “Dark Mirror” that introduced and made canon their relationship. And we all know how people loved ol’ Stevie.

There was a joke that Nathanos was a self-insert (or at least, a favorite character) of one of the writers. The fact that he was killed off-screen around the same time as that writer was let go is a funny happenstance.

Kind of like Thrall being Metzen’s apparent favorite, who went into retirement when Metzen did…

I’m starting to see a pattern here :stuck_out_tongue:
