Early on in my WoW experience I met some friends who helped me learn to play WoW “properly” for raiding and ever since I’ve been in the habit of keeping all relevant class abilities and items/tools on a hotkey. What are some of the weird ones you guys use that would make most players cringe?
For me it’s probably:
Shift + N - Mounts
Ctrl + N - Abilities that aren’t mounts, but allow me to increase movement speed (Ghost wolf, Aspect of the Cheetah, Travel Form, Sprint, Nitro Boosts, etc.)
Shift + K - Food/drink
F1 - Toggle autorun
F2 - Toggle RP walk
F3 - /follow my target and send a random message to party channel about it
As a side note, I’d highly recommend the addon Opie for anyone who doesn’t like binding everything, or who play classes that have a few too many buttons to bind. It can be almost as functional as a regular keybind but it can massively cut down on how many buttons you need for stuff.
What makes a weird keybinding? You think K is a weird letter or something? I think most people use MMO mice now anyway since they’ve gotten pretty cheap
Mainly just being unconventionally far from where the keyboard hand rests. I think people tend not to really venture further than T, G and B for most cases. I don’t even really think my keybinds are very weird. Maybe just when I consider how often I have to use them, they seem unconventional on paper.
Oh, definitely. I use a Logitech G600 myself. I started using MMO mice a very long time ago with the original Razer Naga and I’ve never looked back. SO useful, even outside of MMOs, or even video games in general.
By default, most in-game menus are bound to the keys on the other half of the keyboard. P - spells, L - quests, J - currency, H - pvp, etc. I can’t see why anyone would avoid using those keys when the alternative is to search around a tiny bar and click. Massive waste of time and focus.
Weird is going from keyboard to programmable gaming pad with modifiers: shift/alt/ctrl on the mouse. Left thumb controls my character: forward, backwards, strafe left/right.
I’ll hit the “n” button, but then my right hand can/will hit shift/alt/ctr+n. Every macro I have starts out like this:
It’s definitely a weirdo, but it’s also on the far right side of the keyboard.
Probably my weirdest keybind is Shift + B for my mount. I made that change when I realized there was no need for it due to all in one bags. Shift + W was one I used to use, which was just awful.
Yeah, I think it’s because those keys tend not to be used by a typical player for actual keybinds.
Man, I’ve always been really interested in trying out a gaming pad, but I’m too afraid to take the plunge because if I don’t really like it I don’t think I can find a decent use for it.
I’ve heard they can be quite “OP” though, being able to use a D-pad or a stick for movement rather than using 3 fingers on 4 keys.
Ooh, yeah. I’ve learned the hard way not to use any bindings that I might accidentally press with my regular movement.
Oh my god, that’s awesome. I love that you have dedicated bindings for that. Could I have your macro?
And you also just reminded me that I use F1 for autorun, F2 to toggle RP walk and F3 to automatically follow my target and send a random message to /p about it.
I remap WASD to ESDF in almost every MMO I play because it gives more real estate for binds. Makes switching from games where I havent rebound a little weird though lol.
I’ve considered doing that myself. It definitely doesn’t make the greatest sense that developers seemed to just unanimously decide that we should only have access to roughly half of all the keys on one of the most complex and robust game controllers available…
My problem is mainly that WASD is so ingrained into my soul that I can naturally just reach down to my keyboard and place my fingers on those keys without looking even if my keyboard is sitting in a weird spot on my desk. I don’t know if it would be worth it to fight the most basic muscle memory I have.
Idk if this is “weird”, but I abuse my mouse wheel. Up/Down, Shift Up/Down, Control Up/Down. Normally it’s for a variation of aoe spells, movement, racial, or misc abilities.
F1 for Stealth, or if I have more than one stance, like on a Druid, function 1 through whatever for the forms.
Yeah, that’s definitely pretty weird I think. Not weird in the sense that it’s difficult or unintuitive, but weird in the sense that there probably aren’t many people who do that.
That’s actually a pretty good idea though. I could see that being really useful for things you’d want to spam, maybe like spamming a macro to sap a rogue in Stealth first.
I try to keep my bindings similar across all classes, main rotation is 1-6, e/r/t/y is cds, q is kick, f is heal, z/x/c is misc, b4/b5 and their shift/control variation usually are defensives, up/down mouse wheel with their shift/control variations normally default to aoe for up and movement for down.
Fun fact, shift-e is actually a very spammable keybind for my hand placement, which also just so happens to be my sap
One thing that’s weird for me personally, I use shift-y but only on my rogue. It comes so natural for me to know it’s my distract keybind and for me to hit it perfectly, but on any other character with any other ability there, I will never remember it exists lol
