We need to talk about Ret Paladins

I don’t like to speak on balance in general because i don’t think I’m qualified.

I am definitely biased because Ret is the first time I’ve really loved a spec in years. I would not like it taken away from me.

What rubs me the wrong way about this topic: OP clearly is advocating for a nerf, when called out on it they dissemble and ask to be told where they were advocating for a nerf, only to straight out say it many posts later.

Advocate for a nerf or not, I can’t presume to say whether or not that would be best for the game, but at least stand by your actions honestly.

You gotta be careful with those automatic sacrifices, especially in keys. I do not run that talent because you could really end up in a bind where you have automatically sent out a sac and are not ready to take on that damage.

Low skill floor? Sure, it’s not a terribly complex spec. But I’m going to justify it for myself right now and no one will change my mind. I’ve been playing this damn thing for nearly two decades. I DESERVE everything I have at the moment. And so does every other ret main out there. The state of current ret is no where near previous iterations we’ve had of other godly specs in pve content in the past, so I don’t feel bad. I’mma just keep bein’ cute and doin’ my thing and when blizz has decided that we’ve had enough fun and they gut our damage, I’ll still be here playing it. Til then though, I’m riding my sunshine :sunglasses:

rets are in a good spot right now, they are meant to be more of a beginner friendly but still perform class. It’s got a relatively easy to learn hard to master kit in my opinion. You can tell a good ret from a bad ret any day of the week. I think BM hunter is actually the easiest spec in the entire game, that being said there are also a few other class/specs that are massively overperforming. Feral druid is godlike (granted it’s a more difficult to play spec) and I always found Dev evoker very easy to perform well on without even trying lol. Just my 2 cents, I also mainly pvp but still do a fair amount of mythics/raiding.

Auto sac is something i don’t see myself using, yeah. I already have to watch everyone’s bars for off heals anyway, and it can be really nice to presac people for mechanics that are tough on them.

Yeah I don’t have a real problem with it as long as the maximum throughput is lower than a higher skill class, lots of games do this and create beginner archetypes that are easy to pick up (here its ret, frost DK, destro lock, etc.). Not everyone wants to have 30 different buttons like an enhance or precise timing windows like a demo lock or whatever, but if you do play those optimally it should have a higher payoff given the greater complexity.

I do agree with that last statement. The ceiling should always be higher for the more complex classes imo. But a lot of those class players will say they just enjoy the higher skill requirement over playing ret and Frost DK and not just damage numbers which I believe.

The hero talents can also be blamed. The amount of damage I pump passively just through Sentinel is nuts. Same for Frost DKs in Reaper’s Mark. Same for Tempest for Enhance.

Yeah, you can always see the difference between a good ret and a trash one by how well they use their utility.

I’ve saved wipes with clutch loh’s, bops, wogs, brez, bos, etc etc, while still being #1 in dps.

I feel like a god damn god

Enjoy it while you can, its getting nerfed for sure

Big true.

Also that the spec has always been popular, as it’s one of the main specs of WoW lore (WC3 TFT being mainly about a Paladin, for example)

Considering that Ret was terrible from Cata through SL (a good 10-12 years), and they only really got good from their rework in DF, then I’d say it’s fair for us to be good now :stuck_out_tongue:

Nah, I’d rather not talk about the OP lads this expansion. Y’all can put in no effort and top the dmg meter. Enjoy your Meta Expansion, before the folk pettier than me raise enough uproar to have y’all knocked back down to no.3 in the meter.

If their class lore didnt absolutely disgust me (LIGHT, JUSTICE) i wouldve rolled one in DF s3. Theyre so far and away the best class in the game between aoe damage, utility, IMMORTALITY BUTTON, flash heals, rez, stuns, ease of rotation. Anyone who saya otherwise plays one and doesnt want it nerfed.

i don’t really care what happened a decade ago. i’m talking about the current expansion
cataclysm has no bearing on class balance right now

I mean I been doing this for years so I doubt it

I grew out of finding paladins cool when i was like 13 lol. Just seeing the average paladin enjoyer in all the dnd groups ive been in is enough to put me off them forever. And they’re the same in wow. Main character syndrome andys with cringe rp names all wearing the exact same transmog… yawn

It is WoW: The Nerfs Within. If any spec starts excelling a bit too much and starts receiving some praise, there’s going to be a humongous over-correction of nerfs followed by some of those nerfs being reverted.

Ret does very good damage on very short cooldowns which means it’s insanely consistent, brings a ton of utility and has one of the lowest skill floors in WoW to do very well with, but with just enough of a skill ceiling to interest folks who want to push the highest end.

They are basically the perfect spec right now.

There is literally always a really great easy spec.

If a spec is bad for 12 years, it deserves its time to shine :stuck_out_tongue:
Also, if Ret is so good, why is it hardly ever in MDI/AWC/RoWF*?

*It actually was in the Nerub’ar Race, but only because Holy was really that terrible and they still needed devo aura, not because Ret was good enough DPS to get a spot on it’s own

We have a talent that does it for you automatically now AND gives you a little bump to damage. That to me screams Blizzard saying

“Please hit this big red button. Please. We’re begging you. We’ll even hit it for you. Just please, for the love of god, use your utility.”

Paladin is a utility GOD. I have NO IDEA why it feels like people are using it LESS in group content these days.

I cant talk about ret pallies. Theyre pink and Im a manly man…
