Water Strider Discussion

I know I already replied to this same question, but this thinking is going down a rabbit hole I feel is a bad idea.

Should my alts have access to a toy bought from a rep vendor? Like the fishing raft?
Should my alts have access to a battle pet bought from a rep vendor?

Are you next going to tell me that the Lightforged Warframe (which cost a considerable amount of gold on top of exalted with AotL) can’t be used on characters that didn’t earn it? Pay more gold? You’d have to be kidding.

Brinedeep Bottom-Feeder?
Green Proto-Drake?
Talbuk’s?
Netherwings?

Blizzard created the Account-wide system, it’s their mess if they didn’t realize what would become of it, not the players that worked within that system. We didn’t cheat, hack or do any nefarious things to obtain these items.

Also, at the time striders were introduced, flying was a max level ability that was available directly at max level, we weren’t running around on the ground for 8 months. What would you need a strider for when you can fly. I’d say that is pretty clear that Blizzard intended for your alts to use this mount.

that’s called breaking even, not a cost. Besides you just put it on another mount? I don’t understand the complaint.

It’s not breaking even when there’s extra time and gold that must be spent to get back what you once had immediately and for free.

Put what on another mount?

Again you’re not following the conversation. I’m talking within the hypothetical that they do allow you to have water walking account wide with an equipment slot and mail you the mount equipment item. That would just be breaking even.

A mount glyph…

Only when I’m basically forced to by bad terrain design and middle of nowhere quests. Of course this wouldn’t be an issue if I could fly shortly after reaching max level(pathfinder part1) instead of waiting almost a year to unlock it(again).

I use other mounts all the time. I’ve had the strider since MoP back when it would regain water walking after dropping combat. I only used it when the game lead me to large bodies of water and I wasn’t on a character who could simply cast water walking.

Right now in BFA I use it occasionally depending on layout of world quests. Nazmir on the Horde side of things is the biggest use of it, although most times its nearly useless with all those angry fish in the rivers. Over on Kul Tiras I occasionally use it in Stormsong Valley or Tiragarde Sound to get somewhere without using an AFKFlightPath.

Again, if Pathfinder was just a one part thing, the strider would be a non-issue. You(Blizzard) created this problem with your “vision” of “immersion” that ultimately reads as either bad terrain design or intentional time wasting.

The writing is on the wall, mount equipment is just another way to control how we move through the world in new content going forward. Can’t wait to have to earn back my mount equipment slot in whatever expansion comes next.

Free is the acceptable price. I use it almost every day on multiple characters. It’s the best way to get around the terrible zone design. Remember when roads were free to travel on? yeah not anymore… water is the way to go

The equipment is a consumable that affects all of a character’s mounts. You don’t choose which mount gets what, you choose which character gets what. If you change your mind for a specific character and want to equip a different ability, you lose the ability you had equipped. You must purchase a new item if you want to re-equip it in the future (and lose whatever you had equipped).

AHhhhhhhh! Did not understand that. I just thought the equipment slot was per mount >.<

This is what I’ve been trying to say. The effect is at the character level, not the mount level and not the account level.

Crap, that is actually really restrictive. Sorry.

Since Blizzard has been doing their best to avoid explaining things clearly, I’m not surprised that many players don’t understand what’s going to happen when this goes live.

I most certainly wish the equipment were a glyph that applied to individual mounts. That would have been a terrific idea, and would have given players true choice of which mount to use.

They could have easily added more mounts just like they keep adding underwater mounts. Or they could update their system and automatically grant water walking to any “hover” flying mount like the albatross thing from island dubloons. Any mount that does not sit with its feetsies (hello dreadwake, blizzcon airships, rukmar hawk, parrots, etc etc etc) would glide over the water instead of belly flopping into it.

The magic frog god mounts could have bounced on the water either as-is or by flopping lily pads under themselves as they bounce, similar to DK ice path glyph.

Or make an engineering water boot barding since people have and use bardings all the time, apparently (I don’t but more power to you).

Or throw immersion out the window and give every mount water walking baseline (sorry DK and sham, om nom nom).

I think a glyph system would also be interesting, but would you need to buy glyphs for each mount, on each character?

I don’t even see how this is a mess that needs cleaning up!

Look if I could make an mount have an account-bound ability and then they send me a water walking token, I’d put it on my strider and ride away feeling like that was a good deal.

Taking away my permanent account bound reward that I use on 50 toons, and replacing it with a temporary character bound one is so full of crap, that it is the straw for me.

This, so so SO much this.

I don’t either, but Blizzard is acting like it is. I think it works fine right now, no changes needed since nothing is broken.

Since the mounts themselves are account-wide, the glyphs applied to them should be so also. However, it’s all academic, since Blizz would never give us that kind of freedom. We have to play the game their way, and they’ll do everything they can to make sure we don’t step out of line.
