I’m riding my strider partly for spite and partly because I genuinely like it.
I’ve seen a lot more striders in the game since patch, though, so I’m guessing there’s a lot of spite out there.

Why, yes. Yes, I am.
That, and I really like the bug. Whenever I go over to Bondo’s yard, he makes a comment about me riding a big mosquito. Obviously someone at Blizz anticipated folks’ continued use of the strider.
I’ve been using my pureblood fire hawk out of spite because it’s so ridiculous that it can walk on water. It should be evaporating water, not walking over it. The pureblood fire hawk doesn’t like to get back on the water if it falls below water for any reason though - the stupid mount equipment doesn’t even work right for a lot of mounts lol.
Mount families would’ve been a far better idea. Groups of mounts with similar features with boats, water striders, and maybe some other types of mounts that make sense floating over or walking on water all having the water walking ability. Maybe another set of mounts in another mount family with innate anti-daze abillity. Just for a couple examples.
This would have been soooo much better than equipment. It makes me sad that we didn’t get anything like it.
I agree with both of you, but from the dev’s standpoint, we have to make a “meaningful choice”. We can’t have everything. Why? I don’t know, but that has been an underlying design decision by this current team for some time now. Want to walk on water? Now you get dazed every two seconds while on land. Can’t walk on water AND avoid getting dazed by mobs, you must choose. To me, it’s anti-fun, and so, about a year ago, I changed over to using tokens only for sub time and now go months in between where I’m not subbed at all, when I used to be continuously subbed with my own money. This is only one of many “straws” for me though. This is just the most recent.
Why are there so many good ideas but the Devs implement the worst alternative?
Because the goal wasn’t to improve the mount system, it was to remove water walking from the strider. Mount equipment is the distraction they’re using to break the strider, then in a future patch they can render the equipment non-functional and the excuse given will be, “equipment and consumables have always been made obsolete when new content comes out.”
It’s a movement!
I too am purposefully using the strider more often than I did before this change.
It used to be just when I felt like it, or when I needed to not swim.
Now, it is also so that whoever thought it was ugly and overused can see more of it.
I tippytoe in their general direction.
We’re playing wrong and good ideas are not part of their vision.
Bingo. Don’t forget to work on whatever the equipment for the next xpac is locked behind…
It’s now the next xpac, new equipment is unlocked if you completed Mehfinder part 0.5… 9.1 you get flight equipment unlocked* in Mehfinder part 1. (too many complaints about flight in part 2, so now there is no part 2. aren’t you thankful?)
This is going to happen, along with all mount equipment locked behind pathfinder.
and when it does, this game will lose even more subs.
I’ll be one of them.
And when it does, we’ll still have the same cheerleaders on the forums talking about how great it is to have the “choice” of putting flying on our ground mounts, why do we want to take choice away from people?
At some point Blizzard will do something that affects those cheerleaders and their attitude will change.
I was one of those cheerleaders. And was up until the water strider change.
I hated every second of working on the rep to get the water strider. It wasn’t content I found engaging or fun, in a game that I played FOR FUN - and due to this change, I’m not upset, I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed.
The developers have pulled back the veil, and made me realize that doing anything I don’t enjoy doing in game (especially if I’m doing it for 1 specific reward) isn’t worth doing.
I went from playing about 12-14 hours a day in legion, to logging in for raids and when someone asks me to tank mythic plus.
I think y’all are missing the point.
With something like 1M players (down from 12M at it’s height of popularity), Blizz has diversified how it makes money from subs to subs and shop. A BIG driver of that shop money is mounts.
But… prior to flying being unlocked, why would anyone buy mounts if there’s really on ONE mount that works well in most zones?
Thus, they make it so that they remove the sole reason to use an already owned mount so that you can buy more mounts and enjoy them.
Not saying it’s right, it’s what is.
Aaaand, once flying is unlocked, we’ll see more mount diversity.
Honestly, I did the grind in MoP and it was a pain, but I’m also glad to be able to use any mount. I’ll speed boost once flying unlocks and the anti-daze for leveling toons.
OH yeah, I’m with ya. I got clear even before Legion that I would figure out which main and few alts I’d run and that’d be it. I’d do what’s fun and leave the rest and I had tons of fun in Legion and actually enjoying BfA, tho not nearly as much as Legion.
I just went back to having fun and focusing on that.
I agree with you. I am doing the flying stuff because I want to fly, but after that I will just goof around until the raid opens up.
I could have done that anyway. It is not like the strider was the only mount anyone ever used. If you look around towns you wouldn’t see many of them at all.
The strider had a purpose and it was used for that purpose.
I also used to be one of those people who would buy mounts I thought were cool from the store. But I have stopped that practice. I am not shelling out any more cash than I have to.
So glad my lower level alts cant fking use the strider to water walk anymore, would have been nice if you sent me that mount equip slot item on ALL my alts and not just some of them. I hate you Activision.
