The part you are missing is that the mount now has water walking intrinsically. It would not benefit from the mount equipment if the chosen mount equipment slot is filled with a water walking item over and above what exists NOW. If anything ELSE is equipped (and since the equipment slot is per character and not per mount this means it supposedly applies across all of your mounts save the sky golem and the Timber Harvester Mounts) the Water Strider gains that ability but no longer has the ability to WW. So it is a net loss. Further it is a net loss with an opportunity to buy it back.
If any other company did that to an item you owned it would be called Conversion and you would sue them for the tort and win on merit. Because it is a virtual commodity we don’t have a remedy (yet).
This is what happens when companies go public and start getting the stupid idea that investors are their target demographic instead of paying customers.

You have to give up the original vanilla ice cream maker that makes Ice cream for free.
So the seller says I will give you a free coupon so the first time you change flavors on the new machine it will be free. You just will have to special order an expensive item any time you want to change to any other flavor.
A normal person would say, I like the new ice cram maker, but I want to keep my old one too. It doesnt hurt the new ice cream maker in any way and it cost me a lot to get it in the first place. You say “Ill buy in if I can keep my original ice cream machine”.
The seller now tells you sorry, I am taking away your original machine and you now can only deal with the new one. You ask why. They say Because. They say you will give up all the other flavors if you want vanilla or pay us for the option to switch.

There was no “work” involved with the water strider. We played Mists, we did dailies, we got a bug mount. I also got a raft from the drunk bastidge Nat. Then garrison fished in Draenor and got the other one. All for just playing the game.

We have lots of other ways to waterwalk, swim underwater, etc. Harping on about the water strider is just noise at this point.

I agree with the loss of a Rep reward that I finished ions ago. Since the new shoe gimmick is coming in 8.2 the Water Strider will lose it’s appeal, since know one will feel the need to have this unique mount. Just leave the Water Walking Strider alone. it’s been a main stay since MOP… Taking cool things away from players and rearranging everything is not always in everyone’s the best interest…
Clearly this current team is bent on destroying old content so they dont have to look bad by comparison with the garbage their pushing out.
Just sucks that the modeling and art is so fantastic in BFA only to have the other developers trash it all with pathetic, boring story lines and crap mechanics.

Which is why I have always advocated for a player run committee that oversees account actions. Having an employee on one side of a contractual argument represents an extreme conflict of interest where such actions would be concerned. My proposal is that any such committee to have at least 51 members per region (NA, LA, Oceanic, European) and two thirds majority approval to action any account before the committee, no member to be directly or indirectly affiliated with ATVI or any of its subsidiaries, affiliates, successors, or assigns in any manner financially legally or otherwise other than that of player. All decisions of the committees to be validated by Blizzard Entertainment and if agreed to, carried out. Right to appeal a decision to the committee guaranteed. No action to be taken unilaterally by Blizzard Entertainment unless the case is exigent (threatening bodily harm etc).

I sadly have to agree with you. It is also the reason why I am not bothering with much in the game anymore. I don’t mind doing the grind but if I can’t trust that the item I worked hard for is going to keep its ability, why bother.
Why was it a horrible design direction? It allowed people to get to places they had never explored before. The artists in this game have always put things in the oceans, however, it was a pain getting to them, so people didn’t go way out in the oceans. The strider changed this. It encouraged people to go out towards the fatigue zone and explore. I know it did me. my friends and I have explored all of the areas around every landmass on our striders.
Something we would not have done had the mount never existed. It might have been a horrible design direction in your opinion, however in my opinion, they have helped me explore more than ever.

Yeah, I have to pay for ALL of those even though I did the grind already with the understanding that the strider HAD the water walking abiility.
If I knew then what I know now Id never have wasted the time for this otherwise pointless and quit ugly mount.
