This would have been an awesome thing for Blizzard to do. I feel once upon a time they would have done it. It’s sad that I think they wouldn’t even consider it now.
This is my current plan. Water walking potions all the way. If I use the mount equipment system, I’ll use anti daze on most of my alts, and Truthspeaker and my tanks can have the speed boost that someone mentioned spotting on PTR.
Yep.
Just look at the variety of mounts and the current consumables that buff them: no daze, interact while mounted, water walking, speed boosts.
It’s easy to sort out what type of mount could have which ability and gives individual mounts special flavor as opposed to mount mogging for effects.
(Parachute is worse than glider and I haven’t seen anything that specifies if you get dismounted and get a parachute (like the “fix” for being dismounted when crossing CRZ boundaries during MoP) or if you remain mounted with the chute.)
Chute cliff-jumping: could be worse, their range is much shorter than gliders, and I’m not sure if mount-speed transfers forward momentum to chutes.
WW cliff-diving: ? hmm…
[singing quietly to the tune of safety dance]
We can dance, we can dance everybody look (down) at your hands!
… sploosh no damage.
Also kind of a complete U-turn in over-all direction for Blizzard. So even though I love the idea, I think adding it to the heirloom page is a few planets closer to the realm of possibility with them.
Mount families would have allowed for some cool situational uses, as well, like goats that can jump slightly higher and/or climb steeper paths than normal mounts. Imagine bounding up the side of a sheer cliff on a goat, vs going halfway around the mountain to find the path.
But, that wouldn’t solve the problem for those players who are currently incapable of situational re-mounting. So, no cool mount effects for us.
I want the water strider to stay as is. I spent the time and energy in getting both of them.
I’m severely irked that blizzard is taking something away that I already earned and now they want me to pay for the same feature. No.
Plus I don’t trust blizzard in anything. This is just another way they can deactivate water walking ability in a new expansion.
If you recall, in the Legion PTR blizzard said the water strider would not work. That went over… poorly as it should have. Players gave the same reasons we are giving now. They tried to take something away that some of us earned.
Now this is an end run around from totally destroying the water strider. They are making available something that seems the same and even seems better. But I’d bet 1 million gold that come the new expansion, these lovely equipment slots don’t work anymore. They will need something current that will take forever to get thereby stretching out the game further. They have been doing this for awhile now.
I want my strider left alone. If I choose to only use that mount out of 384 mounts then that is my business.
Mark my words, this is blizzards end run around to get rid of water riding.
Leave the Water Strider alone you savages!
I know right? Like I really have no use for the barding effect because I’m pretty good at not running over and through mobs. I swam pretty much around the entire Eastern Kingdoms when I started during WoLK looking for a way out and being too stubborn to hearth so I don’t mind occasionally jump swimming across a lake or bay. And gliders are basically free with a Garrison and minimal effort. Plus I know how to keybind and use modifiers too!
Point that seems to whoosh right over some complainer’s heads: if you have more than 1 mount on a keybind and are already mounted the next keybind instantly dismounts and remounts you and probably doesn’t even add a full second of extra delay. If you are crossing water so much that ~3 seconds here and there is game breaking you might want to slow down and take a break!
is that what you think people care about?
i don’t think i’ve even seen anyone say “oh no, players who didn’t do the work are going to get the reward!”
…that is absolutely not the issue.
For those people, mount equipment is an amazing change.
Everyone else, has a mount which is having is basic functionality removed, and replaced with a lackluster option which won’t permit the mount to function as it previously did.
It’s the same thing as Pathfinder. They wanted to remove flying from all current content and Pathfinder defacto does this. With the added benefit of getting you to do basically every bit of world content there is for over a year even if it’s things you never did before and only benefit your character by unlocking flight. And, if you opt out of skipping Pathfinder you are basically saying you don’t care about flying at all. Darned if you do, darned if you don’t.
Blizzard only needs to make no daze or slow fall more required than water walking and they can then claim they are removing water walking because hardly anyone was using it.
Considering that it’s only day 2 of testing, PTR pricing is usually low, and the Exalted discount is 10g I’m betting the price goes up and/or some level of reputation ends up being required anyway!
I don’t think I knew that! Then again, I’m an action bar clicking, keyboard turner type of player so I have minimal keybinds outside of the default 1-0 keys. Thanks for the info! bow
You’re welcome. I normally have 2 mounts right next to each other, either ground and flying or one of those and a vendor and therefore am very familiar with clicking the wrong and and immediately changing back!
here’s how i see it: most people that farm special-purpose mounts do so BECAUSE they are special purpose mounts. Examples of this are: passenger mounts, water-walking mounts, flying mounts, swimming mounts, vendor mounts, and gathering mounts.
by making the water strider lose its ablity to passively water-walk, Blizzard is removing a mount-type from the game, and taking away players’ ability to choose the right mount for the situation.
Aquatic mounts are in no danger of losing their innate ability because many of them dont work out of water, and because of this, i’m going to use them as an example. How many people farmed the sea turtle or the darkmoon skate? how many people camped Posideus, or bought his reins off the AH to get a mount that speeds up movement in water? How frustrating would it then be to suddenly have that functionality removed, and ‘sold’ back to you at the cost of not having the choice of an aquatic mount any more?
What if every one of these abilities suddenly became mount-equipment only? players then lose options of what mounts to use for what situation, and instead have to choose which one situation they want all their mounts to deal with.
What if the Vial of the Sands became a generic drake mount bu you had to use an equipment to transform into your passenger mounts? It’d be cool from an RP standpoint, but you’d now have to choose whether you wanted passenger mounts or any of the other ‘cool mount features.’
my 2c.
Yes, first that is a horrible thing to be doing and secondly, how does that affect MY waterstrider which I’ve had since BEFORE they started the experiments?
Thanks for the info!
I tried to make a video showing how fast it worked but it looked like I only got about every 10th frame or so and was all jittery and skipping.
Have you seen the Mortis thread where he’s says Water Strider players are getting a letter stating that the Anglers have been experimenting on the Striders which has caused them to lose their ability to walk on water?
Sorry to reply to you but I’m having trouble finding Ruddypiper’s post that quotes this…
If this is the case, then they need to refund us the full price we paid for the mount. I would never have purchased this mount if it did not have the functionality of water walking.
I hate fishing in game, I don’t find it fun, compelling or engaging game play to stare at the bobber waiting for it to bounce, just to click on it. BUT I made the exception because this mount WAS special.

No worries, man. I appreciate the thought and the effort.
I use the Dominos addon to give me extra action bars, and use part of an extra bar on the right to have 6 mounts at the ready. All of my characters have a personalized ground mount, a personalized flying mount, the obsidian nightwing for 2 person use, the yak for vendor and transmog on the go, the water strider for water walking and sea turtle for under water. It doesn’t bother me to have a cluttered UI, although I know it does most people, but I’m filing away the keybind idea for the future in case I want to stream line things.
