Water Strider Discussion

Welcome to the party.

As of 8.2, water striders will indeed lose their passive ability to walk on water.

Blizzard is implementing a mount equipment system that will allow players to use one type of mount equipment on all mounts. One of the items is water walking, but it will have to be applied by each alt that you want to have water walking. If you have the water strider already, you’ll get one water walking item free and can purchase others at a discount to send to your alts that are level 20 or higher.

You’ll still be able to water walk, but it’ll take extra steps, a bit of extra gold, and precludes you from using other types of mount equipment.

lol

Tin foil hat conspiracy theorists. Look me up on the armory. Look up the person you’re talking about. Compare mounts / pets as they’re account wide. But hey, if you feel the need to ignore me or write me off because you can’t handle the criticism be my guest.

So unless they are going to make getting the equipment pieces be generally a pain to have to grind out rep or the like to buy, I don’t see why the strider wouldn’t follow the sky golem in the way of not benefiting from other equipment. I don’t really get how they think the strider would have a leg up over other mounts when the whole mount equipment system comes around if you were purely stuck with water walking only on it.

It’s not like as an herbalist the Sky Golem doesn’t already have a leg up over most other mounts (as a non druid herbalist that is).

Still have yet to determine why the one that is sold by Nat Pagle, which is BoA, and only available to purchase if you have the required rep and/or have purchased the water strider, is a consumable. Why is it not re-usable? Especially when there are going to be crafted water floaties that are consumable? You could even give the Angler striders a cooldown per character. Once applied to a character, they can’t be reapplied to the same character for 24hrs.
OR just make it like the flightpath map that’s sold by the war faction emissary. Those maps don’t vanish when you click on them, they just toggle some numbers inside the game’s data that opens up those flightpaths for you but the item itself remains in your bag. Send all of the strider riders a free one in the mail to all level 100+ characters like is currently being done on the PTR, let those characters apply it, and then be able to pass it on to lower level characters like we can with those flightpath maps.
OR make it a toy. Have it work the same as the heirloom flightpath books. Click on it, apply the buff. It’s doing the same thing that those books do, simply toggling numbers to make a change in the data.

EDIT - OR, make the Angler’s Strider a unique item, that can only be applied the water striders. Like the stones that are used to upgrade pets, but this action also nullifies their ability to gain the perk from whatever is slotted in the mount equipment slot. If you want water walking on any other mount, you have to use the crafted version in the slot.

Reminds me of a joke. What do you call a hundred lawyers at the bottom of the ocean?

Here, I can linkify those for you.

Another way to do it if you can’t do clickable links is to use the preformatted text feature, the one that looks like </> to the right of the quotation mark icon on the formatting bar.

Still not clickable, but directly copy/paste-able.

They are probably experimenting with how to deliver the free version since it rightfully should go to all your characters level 20 and above since those all have access to the mount on Live: a reusable token or a mail delivery single token per character.

Since there is already tech to drop you in game mail at certain breakpoints (like hitting 80 and getting fireworks from Mel Francis) that might be the easiest option since they can go: has mount, level 20, send token.

Are we sure about this? Seems like it would go one way or the other and not both. Crafted is subject to price gouging and vendor is a fixed price possibly lowered by rep level. The Blue Post talking about the shoes being on the vendor mentioned other equipment being crafted and the other quote was from wowhead I think? Are the other options even available to test? Typically on the PTR there’s a huge NPC that sells stuff that would normally be bought or dropped.

You misunderstood my point then. I was speaking for me and I listed one reason where I found it actually mattered in a substantial way. Being able to interact with objects and not be dazed while on the strider is functionally very impactful. Even then, getting hit means taking a moment when in a safe spot to unmount and remount to activate water walking. Using water walking with stirrups and a saddle while leveling has nowhere near that level of impact. It’s drops from being a massive timesaving feature to being a mild inconvenience at best. I could just as easily keep a stockpile of every possible usable potions on my character too but it doesn’t mean anything and isn’t worth the trouble. Sorta like using a saddle and stirrups right now while leveling.

I’m in absolute agreement with the constant delay of flying, though I’m really surprised they’re going to allow it in the new areas. Makes me think the time to get flying isn’t going to be a couple of weeks like it was for Broken Shore. Still, as I said before, I’m not surprised at all that this happened. I’m more surprised that it took them this long to reign it in.

The anti daze and parachute pants versions will be crafted. I fully expect them to have a crafted water walking item, especially since the only way to even get the BoA item is having the rep. I don’t see Blizzard forcing players back into old content just to gain access to a mount equipment slot item.

Quite likely given they’ve mentioned randomly timed events and evolving quests and stuff. It will probably play out a lot like Suramar where quests are time gated to stretch the content out.

I thought you said you could get one without the rep and the rep just lowered the cost by 10g?

Oh? Like leveling new Allied Races through time distorted content or leveling to max for Heritage Armor or doing the grinds in Legion for those Allied Races?

If you have a crafted version with a variable and likely high price versus a vendor version that you can get the fully discounted fixed price for with a few Timewalking dungeon runs who would purchase the crafted enough to bother crafting them?

Is it really “parachute pants”? They should totally place them on a C.M. Hammer NPC vendor if so!

I have no way to test it on the PTR cleanly. Aka, all my characters, copied or created, have the striders. The one with the Angler rep gets a 10g discount (40g versus 50g). But as Bornakk stated, there looks like there’s going to be a way to purchase the required rep? That doesn’t make sense to me.

I think Bornakk is saying it’s supposed to require Anglers rep in order to be purchased, not that we’ll be required to purchase Anglers rep.

yeah, now that I add a mental comma and a word or two while re-reading it, that’s exactly what he’s saying.

Yep, that’s how I read that and also what I expected when they talked about giving a discount.

Works like any other rep discounted item, the higher your rep, the bigger the discount. Except in this case it will probably require Exalted.
Reins of the Crimson Water Strider
Item Level 90
Binds when picked up
Unique
Mount (Account-wide)

Use: Teaches you how to summon this mount. This mount can walk on water in non-battleground areas.
Requires Level 90
Requires Journeyman Riding
Requires Nat Pagle - Best Friend

“Normally bugs are for bait, but how could you look into its eyes and even think that?” -Nat Pagle
Vendor: Nat Pagle
Zone: Garrison: Fishing Shack
Faction: Nat Pagle - Honored
Cost: 100

That’s probably why you didn’t see the item in the Garrison. Requires a different currency than gold.

Classic blizzard. Take away something many people put in a lot of effort for only to charge them to get it back.

Meanwhile, Ubisoft is giving away Assassin’s Creed for free to anyone who wants it.

But back to the crafted version, his statement doesn’t confirm anything, but Kaivax’s statement

could be read as there’s also going to be additional sources, aka, a crafted variety.

Why buy the overpriced crafted one when you could likely buy a cheaper vendor one? Or have a alt that you have only to craft the equipment.

They like to keep things in sort of a ballpark range of each other meaning vendor items will be close to what they expect the AH price to be given the price of mats.

Therefore I’d expect the finished vendor price to go up on Live unless the crafted versions use worthless mats if they did that then they may as well just throw them all on a junker gnome vendor and call it a day.

First thought that comes to mind is you don’t have to go back out to MoP and do the rep. From what I’m hearing, people are saying it’s not that difficult to get with TW dungeons. But it all comes down to what players are willing to pay in their time or gold.
