If I had a cold piece for each time I’ve read this response, and Blizzard never listening, I’d be richer than a Goblin!
But this is what you get when the sales teams start calling the shots. They have no creativity so they resort to smoke and mirrors. “Let’s just take away x and y and give them back later for a fee. They’ll think it’s new content and we’ll milk them dry! they are going to love it!”
Much like, “our decisions are chasing away millions of players but let’s just stop reporting that and instead report how active they are per month. We can just daze them everywhere they go and limit their abilities to dodge our tedious CRAP so it will take longer! this will be awesome for our metric!”
I mean, god, who let it get so bad there?
Nope, still secondary. Maybe tertiary even, but that’s besides the point.
How you play the game doesn’t change the focus of how it was designed.
omg I remember how much pure…wait for it…FUN that was!
Thre angler’s quests are hilarious!
Bur blizzard saw how fun it was so down came Ion’s little hammer.
No they aren’t.
They are giving one of my alts a free water walking equipment,
My other 99 will have to pay for it.
That’s one of the goals here. There are a lot of mounts out there and it’s strange to have a “wrong choice” when out running around. You’ll easily be able to keep the ability just as you have it now but there will be other options that you (the player) can make if you prefer something else. How you about the world, where you often go, and how fast you like to escape from things could all contribute to what works best for your playstyle.
There are a few extra notes so like Death Knights can do waterwalking via Path of Frost (and Shaman with Water Walking). That should help empower these classes a bit and help make them feel a bit more unique.
I’m not sure what the price of the waterwalking shoes will be offhand, but it should be pretty affordable on the Anglers vendor. We’ll have the PTR up soon™ and look forward to hearing your feedback on that.

So any mount I decide to use can be the “wrong” choice? I earned the water strider to use to uhmmmm walk on water.
You are taking away the very purpose of the strider, sending us “free” boots as a here ya go, happy now consolation prize and forcing us to use one of the 3 choices to give us back what we already had on ALL our characters.
Now to use the strider on alts it costs gold.
We also cannot choose either of the other 2 options if we want the strider to do what it has always done, the very reason we worked to earn it all because you guys are afraid that we feel “strange” for making the wrong choice to ride a particular mount?

Hold the PHONE!
Are you saying that we, the players, made a mistake earning the Angers rep and buying Water Strider? Ha! It is our choice to buy the Water Strider because it’s very useful in Nazmir/Tiragarde (shortcuts in Tiragarde) and old zones. Goodness!

Honestly any price more than 50-100 gold is starting to get cost-prohibitive for people with a lot of alts. If the price was something like 1000 gold, people with max accounts are looking to spend 49000 gold just to restore the previous functionality, nevermind the time investment of buying all of those, mailing them all, equipping them all, etc.
Mounts are accountwide, the system should be too. I would much prefer a larger upfront cost (say even 10-20k gold per piece) that adds the respective equipment to an interface that I can select from like glyphs. For the sake of balance, simply restrict how many mounts can use a particular type of equipment at any one time.
Or, barring that, simply make the equipment equipped accountwide. That ends up with some minor quibbles when it comes to things like Death Knights, but I feel it’s far superior to making people individually purchase potentially dozens upon dozens of individually equipments to sort among alts. This should be a direct improvement of the current account-wide systems, not a backstep.
As for how often the mount is used, that’s extremely difficult to quantify, but I can’t think of a time recently where I’ve logged on a character and haven’t had to use it during any given play session, short of purely auctioning or a case where I’m literally only on for a raid.
Agreed!
and any ‘free’ stuff they send to me, like those stupid ‘warer shoes’ or whatever, Ima THROW IT OUT!
One change to mount equipment I’d like to see if this system goes through is to make the equipment slot per mount (which would likely make it account-wide since mounts are account-wide).
That way I can have water walking on my water strider and several other mounts and barding on other mounts. I’m still choosing different mounts for different purposes, but at the same time I can have water walking on any mount that I choose that can equip the equipment.
The water striders would keep water walking by default but be unable to use any other equipment.
If it’s mailed to us, just let it sit there, take up space in dataland.

Does not matter how or why something is designed. The simple fact is many people do not play this game as it was intended to be played. That is more on the decision making and design of the content and the game as a whole that is on Blizzard’s shoulders for boxing people into doing things to get around the decisions and design they chose to create, then they come back at the end results of their own making. I do not raid or dungeon grind for more than just this one point, but it is the biggest of all my points.
This player base was allowed to go in the tank because of the decisions and designing processes that Blizzard themselves have chosen to make for nothing more than dollars. If they gave a crap as much as they say they do or have done over the years, then many of those decisions and design problems and issues would not endlessly be plaguing this game. I have improvised, adapted, and overcome every problematic decision this company has chosen to making when it comes to this game.
My play style is a direct reflection of where they have chosen to go with this game in making it the game that it largely is today. Intent goes to those that chose to not play a game in its intended purpose, because it intended purpose over many years was literally allowed to go places that it should have never seen the light of day. Blizzard is reaping what they chose to sow and cultivate over many years. Their player base today is largely as a result of their own lack of caring and attention over the years that this game needed to continue to thrive, not wither to the point that it has. Does not matter what the intent or purpose of this game. There are more people that do things other than dungeon grind and raid than do.
Does not matter how or why something is designed.
I mean, when you’re discussing what is and isn’t a primary focus of the game as a whole, that’s pretty much all that matters.
They think that the main issue is “alts lose water walking while leveling”: No, we get that you can equip water walking at level 20, that’s ok.
Problem comes at new expansion and that ~year of no flying, when you want to use anti-daze/whatever they add in the future vs water walking (when you already have a mount that can… water walk).
“Honestly any price more than 50-100 gold is starting to get cost-prohibitive…”
You are out of your friggin’ mind. Try anything over 50 silver, tops, is cost-prohibitive. Those of us who have already earned a Water Strider have already paid enough for its functionality.
YES!
Good plan!
Will do!
As soon as Wowhead datamines the price of the mount equipment for Water Strider owners I’ll update this thread at the top.
Or if the PTR goes live. Which should be any minute now.
Wow, this isn’t going where I thought blizzard was going at all!
I thought mounts would have like a socket on them (equipment socket), and you could put only 1 socket in each mount. The water strider mount would have a water walking equipment already installed on it. The sky golem would already have a gathering equipment installed on it…
If I wanted to swap the existing equipment on those, I could to something else but would lose the original… e.g. if I wanted to be able to gather on my strider but water walk on my sky golem.
Then you would only need to put the equipment into the mount collection ONCE per account since mounts are account wide… and if you like using your water strider and golem, you need to do nothing on patch day (other than maybe install the blizzard provided equipments on said mounts)
e.g. if I wanted my core hound to be my anti daze mount, I could put that one on him and use him or any other mounts i want to add the equipment socket to.
But I agree with most posts here that this seems like an AWFUL system if you are making alts buy equipment for mounts that have already been consolidated to an account wide system. Alts don’t get everything, but this is a really fugly way to implement this feature.
I think blizzard needs to look at the goals of this feature, do you want to offer variety of mounts to your player base to perform particular roles or another pointless grind that’s already driving your players away in droves…
You could even add fun equipment like wings for ground only mounts that could make them fly (or propellers for the silly players in us…)
And besides, I still have my trusty Anglers Raft and can work on getting the Underlight Angler thingy.
Who needs water striders?
wait…
