Water Strider Discussion

Perhaps I don’t understand how this is going to work but a simple way to deal with both water striders and golems and your new mount equipment option would be to have both those types of mounts immune to the mount equipment.
The mounts would be able to keep their specialty that we worked for/paid for and still give us the use of the mount options for our other mounts.

Damn, I am only a few days away from being Exalted on my hunter and now I run across this article. I am not a mount collector, and I certainly would not have spent the time to get this ugly bug if I knew they were going to take away its innate ability to walk on water. I don’t understand how they could do this…
Unless reputation rewards give players an unfair advantage in actual combat why would you take it away.

So Water Striders can’t stride on water … got it.

I can’t believe the stupidity these devs entertain. We worked for this mount, it has character. It’s sounds are cute and it FLIPPING SHOULD be able to walk on water.

I couldn’t care less about mount addons and garbage that will make EVERY one water walk. Not every mount should be able to do it, ffs. Think how stupid a big huge, fat rhino-looking mount’s gonna look traveling across the water!
Good f’n grief, leave the strider alone already! For once in your lives stop entertaining dumb, stooooopid crap.
And give hunters back aspect of the cheetah again the way it used to be. Not this 8 second piece of garbage with a 3 minute c/d.

An interesting question, Bornakk. For me, I have yet to earn the reputation with the Anglers, however as of the next MoP timewalking week, I will have finally earned it. I’m not one for doing Time Walking because, well, I played those expansions, and did not wish to go back, but given the incentive to earn the waterwalking mount seemed like it was worth it.

Also for me, I main a Shaman, so the need for a waterwalking mount was useless, but for my Alt’s it “was” everything. But now, if I have to go out of my way to basically purchase or re-earn it for Alt’s, well, you lost me. Basically it sounds like I wasted a lot of time on content I could care less about earning something for use with my Alt’s only to have to jump through more hoops to get it. Sorry, Dude but that’s just time I’m not going to waste. And I mean “waste” because that’s all it is.

You guys like to say you come up with these ideas with the main goal being “fun.” Please, explain to us how any of this sounds like “fun?”

I provided a reputable sources breakdown of the system. Please provide sources to yours.

If my Striders lose their WW ability I demand that DK’s and Shamans lose their WW spells…make them pay for it like rest of us have too…

At the very least, the water strider should continue to walk on water if you don’t apply any equipment at all.

For example, one could at least make the argument that the “weight” of the non-daze equipment makes it so the strider can’t walk on water anymore.

This would keep some element of choice in the system, would prevent anyone from having their cake and eating it too, but would do so without removing anything from the players who simply choose to not use equipment at all.

It also solves the issue of having to buy the water walking equipment on all a player’s alts when they previously had water walking for free.

TLDR: Water Strider keeps water walking ability unless non-water walking equipment is applied.

As it’s worked since it’s implementation: All alts should have access to the mount if we got it on one character. It’s been working well, no need to change it or nerf it.
It should work this way with all reputation, seriously.
Since I’ve gotten the strider I’ve used it on water if I didn’t have flying. Most times I change to another mount after I’m off the water.
I do definitely disagree with the concept that some people have that the mount is overpowered or used all the time.

Bornakk, players have had this discussion with Blizzard about waterstriders before when Legion was being worked on and nothing has changed pertaining to them since then.
I spent a non-trivial amount of time to acquiring both my waterstriders. I also did this when they were current content.

To answer your questions Bornakk:

  1. “if the character who earned the Anglers reputation along with the mount gets the water walking item for free, what would a fair price be for the alts to get it?”

There is no price that would ever be fair since I spent a large portion of time acquiring both mounts.

  1. “If that character who earned the reputation and mount has the option to water walk (but might choose something else), do you feel that alts should have every single thing that the other characters have?”

Before answer this question I’d like to address your facetious remark:
“do you feel that alts should have every single thing that the other characters have?”
No. That is absurd. That you would make such a flippant comment in a serious discussion is unprofessional and entirely unbecoming behavior of someone representing Blizzard.

To answer your underlying question:
I spent a significant amount of time acquiring both waterstrider mounts so I have no problems with my alts being able to freely use them to walk on water. After all, they are account wide and were when I got them.

  1. “how often would you estimate that you have you used the water strider mount in the 6+ years it’s been available?”

Depends on how often I play in zones where flying is enabled. Often enough to have it hotkeyed on action bar 2 next to my sky golem and Kosumoth underwater mount.

My initial reaction after seeing some of the changes coming in the next patch was to start thinking of buying BFA. Taking waterwalking away from my waterstriders after I spent as much time as I did earning them makes me not want to buy BFA.

Bornakk, if you take only one thing away from this thread then please let it be that we don’t want to lose something when we spent a lot of time getting it.

Additionally Bornakk, please stop pretending that waterstrider mounts are entirely ubiquitous as there is a significant portion of the WoW population that has not earned them.

Yeah, you’re out of it. Those attunements no longer exist, and haven’t for years. You don’t need a molten core attunement to get the teleport, you don’t need the aqual essence to put out the runes, you don’t need anything to get into Karazhan anymore.

I did all of those when they were relevant. At the time, they were fun, aside from the aqual thing to get the permanent vial, but because you had the other ones, you could work your way up to it in stages with little trouble. My little raiding guild even got halfway through old Naxxramas before it’s attunement and the dungeon itself were taken away.

There aren’t attunements anymore, which is a shame. Having a goal to work toward was fun. Now it’s just ‘do the same four quests every day for six months so you can get exalted so you can buy equipment that isn’t as good as what you had when you started’.

The complaint is that instead of inherently having water striding on all your characters, when the patch releases, none of your characters will have it and for each and every character you want it on you need to go and buy it.

From what I can see, only 51% of players have the regular Anglers Water Strider. I thought it would be more.

That’s not how the system is set to work currently. It’s on equipment slot per character, and whatever you put in that slot affects all mounts on that character. So if you use the water walking equipmenet on your Priest, ALL your mounts, including the Crawg, will get that affect, but if you log into your rogue, you will not be able to water walk until you re-purchase the equipment for your rogue, even if you hop onto your water walking amount.

whoa…that’s even worse than i thought.
:scream_cat:

If only about half the players even have the water strider where are they getting this idea that water striders are this dominating mount? This whole mount equipment thing is just so bizarre and backward thinking. /facepalm

Wait, what? It’s per CHARACTER not per MOUNT?

This is getting even sillier. I thought at least we’d be able to set one mount as water-walking, one as slow fall, etc., even if we had to redo it for each character.

To an extent, I’d actually prefer setting it per-character/per-mount, because it lets me have a greater variety of hotbarred go-to mounts, customized by character.

Edited for clarity, because this is just getting silly and confusing. Sorry.

I don’t use it and and I don’t have it. And I think Blizzard is being unfair to the people that do have it for their mains and alts. Blizz is on a pruning spree because they are bankrupt with ideas.

It’s not strange at all. If I want to go rock crawling this weekend, taking my Civic would be the wrong choice. If I’m going to run a 5k, wearing flip flops would be the wrong choice. It’s not strange at all to pick the correct tool for the job. If I want to stride on water, I use the Water Strider. If I want to fly, I use a flying mount.

If you truly want to give players choices, give the other mounts innate abilities. Why can’t The Dreadwake travel on water? Why do bird/dragon mounts that hover in the air, lose the ability to hover over water? The solution to this problem was not to add mount equipment. You’re manufacturing tornadoes to blow out a match.

Another solution would be to not artificially inflate map sizes by adding so much water. We didn’t need these mounts in Vanilla/BC/etc. Only recently has there been all this water that needs to be crossed.

The only people that are for this change, either don’t fully understand what we’re losing, or don’t have either of the Water Striders anyways and are truly gaining something.

  1. Losing Water Walking Ability that is currently Account Wide for anyone that spent a couple of hours in their garrison, or a couple of weeks, doing the dreadfully awful Angler dailies. (You will still have it accountwide after the change, after BUYING the ability you’ve had for 7 years, for every single toon you want to use it on. Except for the free one, Angler people earned.)

  2. Won’t be able to use mount equipment that you currently can attach to make water walking less of a pain in the …Dazed, Mount Speed, all of that, not an option while your “mount can run on water”. Meaning any water you walk over in this scaled world, will have u being dismounted because some fish thinks you smell pretty.

  3. It’s a change that doesn’t have to happen, they can literally add the equipment for people who don’t feel like farming a strider, and have THEM use it instead of a dazed equipment, or instead of a run speed equipment. Because THEY don’t want to grind for something that’s til this day obtainable, with just a little bit of effort, and can even get it within a day from the Draenor Garrison once it’s level 3…

It’s literally, feeding into the laziness that is overwhelming in this game already.
