Water Strider Discussion

I’m a little confused by the system. Is the “correct” way to use it to have a a bunch of stacks of equipment in my bags and apply the correct one at the time I need it out in the world? Like similar to carrying around a stack of tomes to change my talents if I need to?

You can do it in a full days time or work it out over a week a shorter increments. If you already have badges saved that even makes the amount you need to run shorter. You get 500 badges for the first dungeon you run and of course you earn some per dungeon. I forget the exact amount you need but it doesn’t take very long. I never did the questing myself and used the time walking event strategy. Tailesen even has a video about it a long time ago.

And then buy it for your alt. And your other alt. And the other alts. Some of us play more than one character.

You get two equipment slots for your mount, once you socket one of the item enhancements you want you put it into the slot. It does not go away unless you yourself decide to change the enhancements by placing a new enhancement item into the slot. The one that was previously in that slot gets destroyed. This enhancements will cover all the mounts for that character. This is the way it is for now but this could always change during PTR

I came back to this game after being gone for 8 years. There have been many changes over those years and the game is very different now. Rep grinding is something that wasn’t in the game much back then. But I digress.

I spent many hours on my main character doing daily quests to get enough rep to get the water strider. I had no idea you could do lower level dungeons as I am fairly new to the game. So, it took me about 3 weeks to finally get it about 2 weeks ago. I had a choice. I could buy the strider for 4000 gold or I could buy faster flying. I chose the mount. My main has 1200 gold at the moment and is level 97 so if this system goes live as of right now she couldn’t even use the system but would lose the water walking on the strider.

Now, Blizzard you actually have the nerve to ask me what is a fair price for my alts? I don’t want to pay for something I already have. That is crazy. Is this the new thing now? Players earn a new thing so you come along take it away and make them buy it back? This just feels slimy and wrong. Not a good way to do business. At the end of the day it is your game I guess.

I also wanted to mention because I haven’t seen anyone talk about it but another problem with this new “system” is that even if you can buy the equipment for alts what about characters on other servers. I have all my horde people on a different server not connected to my current one because these toons were made in 2008 or 2009. So, these characters also won’t have access to the mount and will have to do the grind if I want one for them. SIGH.

This whole thing really changes how I feel about Blizzard as a company. I guess while you are asking if our mount that we earned still can water walk, I will be thinking about whether I want to say subbed. Because honestly, you have broken the circle of trust. What else that I earn is going to be taken away in the future.?

Read the part before what you quoted - I suggested making the system so that each mount has it’s own equipment slot and then the equipment works across an account.

This gets us right back to where we started.

Ummm been there, they did that. Outrage ensued. They didn’t care then they are not going to care now. :frowning:

Awkwardly I would say DH class fantasy trumps the classes who had it first. In this case slow fall would be removed from them and given to the DH !

…I mean if we’re going the super controlling nerf everything route

Precisely.

Coming out with a new system like Azerite Gear that has flaws is one thing - taking something away that we already earned and then offering us to purchase it back is another.

They push this through - and I’ll gladly take my money elsewhere.

The choice should be the mount that gives the player the most utility in the environment that they are using the mount. The answer isn’t to give all mounts the same utility, it’s to give different utility to all mounts.

Mount equipment is a cool idea but it shouldn’t destroy the utility that makes a mount unique.

Rep grinding has always been a thing ever since vanilla. It’s funny all you people are so upset over something silly like this. Why not be upset over the molten core attunement process? Why not be upset over karazhan attunement process? All that took hours and hours to do and the list goes on. Why are you not upset about it? Because it’s old content, just like the water walking mount, it’s old content. If I really wanted to go back and grind that rep out as a 120 it would take me about 10 minutes a day compared to the hours it would back then. Or just simply go to the vendor and use all those time walking badges I have saved up from all the time walking events I have saved.

Also free. Mounts are account wide. I’ve specifically NOT had to re-grind that reputation on other toons because the mount was account wide. I didn’t grind the WoD strider on the characters I spent the most time on because I had the MoP strider already.

Not every single thing. But things that are currently account wide (for free) should remain account wide (for free). Before this goes live, the account wide mount that I have been able to enjoy can immediately be used at no additional cost as soon as my alt hits level 20 and purchases riding. That is the point of account wide stuff.

I use the mount in every expansion, but only when I know there is water I will need to traverse. If there is not water I will need to traverse, or the water is a good distance away, I will use another mount: either my nightwing if I’m playing with my wife, my shredder if on an herbalist, or whatever I feel like elsewise.

This is what many people are asking for. Pretty simple concept.

All you’re doing now is changing the choice from a per mounting up choice to an earlier choice. Read your own words: “it’s strange to have a “wrong choice” when out running around.” If not using the water strider was a “wrong choice,” then not using inflatable shoes is also a “wrong choice.” Only now, I will also lose the ability to make the choice every time I mount up.

Currently, when I mount, I have to make a choice every single time. How far am I going? Am I running through mobs? Is there water I will be passing soon? If so, is it soon enough that I’ll want to go ahead and use the strider? Because the equipment is for all mounts, I don’t get to choose anymore. It’s going to be simply “use the water shoes because otherwise it’s the “wrong choice.””

That does not feel good, Bornakk. You are taking away my choice.

I’ve used my water strider on every toon I made, I like to make alts and level them, after getting to level 20 I would immediately attach three mounts to my action bar, the Water Strider is one of them, I expect to be in area’s where the Water Strider works best, I also attach my Yak and the class mount for the toon I am leveling, I think the Dev’s while they had good intention’s didn’t realize how attached the players are to this mount, if the only thing you can do is to scrap this idea I wouldn’t be upset

I like the idea of having more mounts that have their own innate special abilities. Aquatic themed mounts should swim faster. Ram/Talbuk like mounts should let you climb steeper mountains. Gigantic mammoth type mounts should be immune to daze. It creates a much better, immersive atmosphere. Mount equipment will do nothing but break immersion.

If we MUST endure mount equipment…

I would so much rather each mount have its own dedicated equipment slot that persists through my entire account, and have equipment items be expensive things you work towards, be it from a vendor or profession.

Spend ~5000g to get your anti-daze equipment, slot it on the big tough looking mount of your choice, and have that be the mount any of your characters use when running through lots of mobs.

Pick the one water-walking mount for your whole account.

It’s still a gold sink, but none of this swapping equipment back and forth, back and forth, that NO ONE wants to do.

The water-bugs will be reduced as people’s own choices will come in to play, and people won’t be stuck on just one mount as they’ll have a whole library of situational mounts to select from as the need arises.

Also, stop freaking punishing people for playing alts.

Where did you get this from? Everything I’ve seen only shows one mount equipment slot.

This one is!

And can be abandoned or gated at any time.

Are they going to abandon or block the currently planned crafting gears? Otherwise that makes people feel obligated to farm old content mats to get “mandatory” mount buffs. Or be like the Drums and say old gears only work below 129 and force you to re-buy it every expansion.

Sorry but I have lost all faith in this company. I have no good will left for them.

What a joke. Not everything needs to be purchasable with gold and available to everyone all the time.

I don’t ride around on the waterstrider because it’s ugly. But I USE the water strider almost every time i am online, because it is useful.

Knowing that I have an ability to do something that other players do not have, because i earned it, makes me feel like i am building my toon out with his superhero skill set.

Blizz keeps stripping things like this out of the game and replacing them with gold alternatives and cramming “buy from the shop” down our throats. It’s crazyness.

Not everyone has to have equal everything. Equal Opportunity > Equal Outcome

Here’s a childish explanation of what you’re missing out on, Noob Company

Personally I think making the strider a normal mount with no baseline ability is a mistake. It is Blizzard taking away functionality from players that already have something. That’s not an opinion, that is what is happening (before you factor in the mount equipment).

Now sure, you can still get the mount shoes and put it on, but when Blizz says the reason for these changes is to not have the strider be a “required” mount, they’re just making it so that water walking is the “required” equipment. The only difference is that instead of having it on all your alts already, now you have to buy it on all of them.

In my opinion, I think they should leave the current water walking mechanic on the strider, with the strider being unable to benefit from equipment. This leaves the strider in its current state.

However, to make the strider not be a compulsory mount and also to not make the inflatable shoes useless for those players, Blizzard should make the inflatable shoes not break upon taking damage.

This way, the strider is still a solid mount worth using, but if you are running through Nazmir or something and need the assurance of permanent water walking, or you know you will take damage while water walking, the inflatable shoes are now a true choice between not getting dazed, or not having your water walking broken from damage. This also adds player choice to DKs and Shamans, where they can choose to get an improved version of mounted water walking, instead of just never using the item.

Similarly, as I forsee gathering equipment being introduced eventually and Blizz nerfing the Sky Golem, it should also keep its herbalism ability and be ineligible for equipment, however the gathering equipment should apply to herbalism, skinning, and mining, like the current items from professions do.

The solution to please the highest percentage of players (in my opinion) is to nerf nothing, but to provide further benefit in the equipment that makes earning the mounts still worthwhile in some situations, but not all situations, while simultaneously making the equipment useful and appealing even to those who have earned the mounts or have class abilities that compete with the equipment bonuses.
