They should have just classified mounts in different families/categories and gave those groups unique abilities. Some ground mount families might be able to leap or jump really high, some walk on water, some glide, some have a charge that can stun things in front of you before it dismounts you, etc. They could have catered unique and fun abilities that better fit the fantasy of the different mount types/species.

That takes more work for them though because they would need to look at every mount currently available and all future mounts.

They are taking the lazy route which also lets them add restrictions to mount abilities by adding a slot on the mount journal. This lets them make the mount equipment expansion zone specific or character level specific should they choose that route (since that is how the current consumables work.)

Also, just out of curiosity, how often would you estimate that you have you used the water strider mount in the 6+ years it’s been available?

I almost never used it before this expansion and “your” decision to make all mounts account bound was a decision you made. We were perfectly happy bumbling along having to acquire mounts on individual characters.

I don’t want to pay for every character to be able to use the effects of a special mount. If they need to use that feature they get on that mount. When you you go to take a 9/16" nut off a bicycle because your kid got a flat tire, you go looking for 9/16" not a special 5/8". You use the right tool for the job.

I personally hate the Sky Golem. It’s noisy, oily, and goes all over the place. Additionally, If you can’t fly the Sky Golem is pointless in the first few patches of the expansion. A druid can collect herbs without having to change forms. That’s what you are telling us.

Are you just not reading the part where they said they are literally giving you that item for free?

One item. That is only good for one character. Every other character (that already gets water walking by default starting at level 20) you have to purchase the item at the MoP vendor and send to each alt.

Catch may be that you have to buy this thing for every single character you have.

There’s no ‘may’ about it. You get one water walking one free, and that’s it. You get to buy it for all your alts individually.

I doubt they will be expensive.

The compensation for players who earned the rep and purchased the mount is set to be “reduced price from the vendor.” That’s pretty much how rep discounts already work in the game. If the regular price isn’t high enough to make the discount meaningful then there’s zero compensation for players who earned Honored, Revered, or Exalted the hard way.

There’s also the very likely possibility that the item will require a rep level to purchase for players who don’t have the water strider already. Meaning they have to grind MoP dailies or MoP Timewalking.

I commend you for stepping into this thread on the Monday evening preceding the drop of 8.2 on the PTR. However, this price you speak of not knowing offhand is what will be a determining factor in many players decisions. Personally, I’ve stuck by/accepted/dealt with the changes made over the years to keep the gameplay from just becoming a static habit. But having spent my money and time acquiring the rep required to gain the reward, only to have it removed and then require it to be re-purchased…no. That’s the line. I’m sorry to sound like I’m giving an ultimatum because it’s not. It’s a decision made based on honor, or the lack thereof.

EDIT - and to be perfectly fair, yes, I agree and have so for many years that Blizzard has the right to change content at their discretion at any time. But this is one of those times I won’t be agreeing with it.

Just something I’d like to get your perspective on, if the character who earned the Anglers reputation along with the mount gets the water walking item for free, what would a fair price be for the alts to get it? If that character who earned the reputation and mount has the option to water walk (but might choose something else), do you feel that alts should have every single thing that the other characters have?

They should all have it FOR FREE since the reward was a MOUNT that walked on water.

The strider SHOULD have an EXTRA slot with water walking built into it.

Pretty sure the water walking equipment piece isn’t exclusively sold from the anglers. That’s just where people who have the strider go to get the cheap one.

Just something I’d like to get your perspective on Bornakk. If you checked my time played stats for this year and then compared them to my time played stats since this announcement was made, do you believe the latest stats are better for Blizztavision’s time-played metrics or worse than those earlier in the year?
I only ask because if this decision had not been announced, which I and many others disagree with (to put it mildly), I would not be here on the forums or on Wowhead reading and posting. I’d be busy in game playing and having that Blizzard clock tick over and count my logged in time.
To answer your questions though - twas Blizzard not I that made mounts account wide, then made most achievements account wide, and very recently reputations account wide (for achievements) - so yes, MY alt should get the benefit of MY work and MY time spent in game.
To assuage your curiosity on the second question - I would estimate that I have used the water strider every time I have encountered an area of large or intermittent water in game (not including the occasional narrow but deep stream). So that many times in the 6+ years

It was on the live stream and on some summaries from Wowhead and the like. I can paste in part of it.

“The system is available starting at level 20, after a single character has hit 100. Equipment will be craftable or purchased from reputation vendors, and can be replaced though equipment will be destroyed when doing so.”

The only rep vendor in this equation is the Anglers.

I think this is a good point actually. Since the water walking mount is tied to a rep gain, then clearly only that one character that did the rep grind should get to use the mount.

They just recently made reputations account wide. So why would they break the Water Strider from being account wide after 6+ years?

And yes, the Anglers were stated as the purveyors of the BoA version that’s for strider riders.

Free. why charge an alt at all for using a mount?

Second, I have 2 mounts on my bar the water strider for content you have taken flying away from and then a normal flying mount for the 2nd spot on my bar. So, I use it until you give me flying back in the content I am playing.

Wrong. The shoes are not crafted as far as we know. They are only purchasable from The Anglers vendor. People with the mount get it discounted, people without get it for full price. Both unacceptable. They really need a new post about this specific issue. So much misinformation.

Another time Blizz punishes people for having something for ages. We bought a mount for its water walking ability, it should keep it. What’s next, a mount equipment has flying, so you remove flying from everything?

There is NOTHING wrong with leaving the water strider with waterwalking and not having the ability to do mount equipment on it. Some of us LIKE having different mounts for different things.

They said if you got the strider you can get a discounted WW equipment from that rep vendor. Because that’s where the mount is from and they are taking it away from that mount, the ones locked behind rep.

They aren’t going to make everyone go grind rep just for WW. That’s silly. The ones that the Anglers will sell is discounted ones for people who are exalted.

I’m sure you’ll buy the full priced WW equipment piece from the same vendor that will sell the other ones.
