Yeah, it was just to make a point. And the point was recieved loud and clear because Blizzard abandoned the idea of tying Real ID to the forums very quickly after that.
Not sure why they needed a point even being made. Anyone could have seen that coming.
apparently not blizzard
or people like the op
Itâs too bad that they couldnât have the foresight to just avoid that altogether. I mean, some of them ought to know about internet security right? Iâm very glad nothing malicious happened.
I think that when you make a post that is this clueless, you should lose game time.
Except there are actual and explicit laws about revealing the identity of minors, look at all the crap going on with YouTube lately. Technically a child needs parental consent just to use the internet, but that falls on the parent; no one is going to come after ISPs if a child uses the internet without a parentâs knowledge.
Thing is, initially the idea did have some merit. Not going to lie. Real ID on the forums would have improved forum accountability. Folks who decided to be toxic trolls would face the consequences of their actions in the real world, just like they would if they posted these things on facebook or twitter. Prime example being potential loss of employment if what they were throwing out there went against company policies.
It would have absolutely, 100% cleaned up these forums.
However the downside to having that information exposed to everyone was far larger than any potential benefit and that remains true just as much today as it was all those years ago.
Except you have the option to make your FB private and choose who to add. And twitter you donât even have to put your real name or anything.
1.) WOW has only been around for 15 years
2.) Iâve been playing MMOs for the same amount of time and players like this have always been around, regardless of game or time frame. Anyone who tries to say differently is lying.
And you never reported it to police? Something tells me you arenât telling the whole story.
Iâm not a snowflake that gets bothered by it all. I just look the other way. All you have to do is visualize the âno⌠acktchuallyâ meme guy and it immediately drops the value of what they say to a grain of sand. Also, ignore lists have a cap.
And 99% of it could be mitigated by Blizzard requiring a state ID/license number to verify. Kind of like how you have to swipe your ID to buy alcohol and tobacco products? If a kid went to make a BNet account and it reached that step, they would have to get their parents or someone over the age of 18, to input their information. On that page it would have all kinds of disclaimers and confirmations to make sure that the person knew what they were getting into.
Another thing, itâs been a long while, but I think Blizzardâs original idea was to have real ID only apply to friends and the forums. Someone person in a BG match wouldnât be able to see your actual name unless they added you and you chose to accept it.
People in this game annoy the crap out of me most days.
But noâŚyou dont have any right to out them or get into their privacy.
Report them for whatever theyre doing and move along.
And people are jerks. They dont CARE if you make that public. Theyre going to do exactly what theyre going to do regardless.
If they violate the rules of the game, report them.
Other than that you really dont even have any real case against them in the first place other than whatâŚthey ganked you or something?
Of course I did. I didnât realize you wanted a full report on something that happened to me. I was showing you that it does in fact happen,I didnât realize you wanted every single detail and police reports of the four years he stalked me. I see you are just a stupid troll now though,so bye.
Police donât really care and canât really do anything.
Nice job avoiding the point again. You say you could enjoy the game without the trolls because they wouldnât want their identities revealed. That means you must agree that Real IDâs being revealed is a great way to hold people accountable for what theyâve said. That means youâre also in the belief that providing anyone with your identity is a reasonable risk for what can be considered a minor inconvenience.
Youâre trolling.
Exactly.
I had a very heated discussion with someone on Facebook.
Next thing I know hes threatening to come to florida by plane and kill me, lol.
I dont live in florida but thats the state I list so these nutcase stalkers dont come find me and force me to do something weâre both going to regret.
Keep words at words. Keep internet words ON the internet.
Ive had a couple people who have tried that stalking thing with me over the years. It didnt end like they wanted it to, Im sure.
Id prefer not going there ever againâŚand the OP here has me concerned that that is exactly the sort of crap they might have in mind.
THIS is the garbage that makes the internet go from being merely annoying, to be UNSAFE.
they have our bank/paypal/credit card infoâŚthey dont NEED anything more than that to ID ANY of us down to our DNA.
absolute nonsense
MODERATION would clean up these forums WITHOUT the need or ability for you to stalk someone who said something you dont like.
You are far less likely, statistically, to say something crude and offensive if you do not have anonimity. Thatâs just a fact. You may not agree, but itâs a fact all the same. Something tells me youâre further down the rabbit hole than most people though, judging by that post directly below this one.
As a note to you blizzard employees who likely read hereâŚif you EVER ask for anything beyond my financial information and my phone number, youâll see a few WoW subs closed permanently within 5 minutes.
You have ENOUGH of my personal information as it is. You get nothing more.
sorry but it AINT.
Come by my place some time in person and say something I think is stupid. Youâll get the EXACT same response to your face that iâll give you in here.
Your âfactsâ are a joke.
