Okay, so here’s the thing. Preventative measures are VALID to pursue. It’s why we have locks, why we have fences, why we have guards, and why anyone has privacy and defenses. I am sure more people would be criminals if there was nothing to stop them.
Having a locked door can help deter a would-be burglar from entering your home. Having your information private from a would-be identity thief or stalker is valid. There is NO good reason to reveal someone’s identity.
Loot isn’t worth it. Trolling isn’t worth it. Nothing is worth it in this game. So why take the risk?
I would feel so uncomfortable doing anything if I was forced to have my name publicly displayed on my account and characters.
I’m already uncomfortable adding people on B-Net as it is. I remember before we had the offline option, I wouldn’t add anyone at all. It felt too invasive.
I hadn’t even thought of that but now I’m thinking of it. That’s a new level of fear that doesn’t need to exist. I am sure no one needs to explain why the identity of a CHILD needs to be protected. Right?!
How often does this happen in the sports world? (excluding hockey fights that are a part of the “script” for games)
That’s why we have laws and law enforcement. It’s part of what got us out of anarchy and into the civilized(mostly) world we live in today.
Except it’s pretty easy to kick in a door or break a window, which they still do if a door is locked. Which means if they want it to do it, they are probably still going to do it.
Except even Blizzard sells off your information to 3rd parties. We’ve had like what, 3-4 big leaks? One or two of which they have semi-owned up to. Remember when accounts were getting hacked left and right with authenticators attached to them? Hell, they even got me…
Children can’t play without parental permission. If a parent sees that there could be a privacy risk, they can just say “No Billy, you’re not allowed to play that game.” This happens with teens that have helicopter parents where they are like 15 and still not allowed to use social media. I know of a few friends from school that do this with their teens. WoW would be no different. This assumes that the parents are actually keeping track of what their kids are doing though.
You’re missing the point. It feels like you’re doing so purposefully. Doxxing yourself is not helpful. Doxxing yourself for a game is stupid. Doxxing yourself and using something akin to the honor system is absolutely insane. You are insane. I really hope you’re trolling at this point.
No it’s not. Because 1. Blizzard already knows all the information that your Real ID provides and 2. No one else can get your Real ID information without your approval.
Who cares how often it happens? It does happen and happens enough that I don’t want it to happen to me again. I was stalked for four years from some guy I talked to in an AOL chat room. He found out all kinds of things about me just by knowing my name. Showed up at my house and work multiple times. Also met a woman who actively stalked a mutual friend of ours after they had a falling out. She called the woman’s husband and her boss, causing all kinds of problems.
Unstable people out there who do not need to know anything more than my character name. I see zero reason for anyone in wow to know my name. Blizzard knows my name and its up to them to sanction my account if I do something against TOS. No one else needs that info in this game.
OP is hypothesizing that the game would be better off if blizzard had gone through with their plan to expose our RealID information to everyone.
it was a huge deal when it happened. ended when some blue poster posted his realid and said “see? no one can get my private information from this” at which point the internet swiftly proved him very, very wrong.
Can’t find the ignore button? I’ll help you. Right-click on someone’s name in the chat. Click Ignore. Done! As if the game needed fewer people playing it, especially over something as idiotic as wanting to reveal PII to stop your feelings from being hurt.
I know precisely what the OP is saying, because I replied to him earlier in the thread and denounced the idea. I actually referenced that event in my post. But the person I replied to is not the OP and is making the claim that Real ID in general is a privacy invasion, which it is not.
Folks called his mobile and his house and visited his address, basically doing all the activities you’d associate to someone who is a ‘creepy stalker’ just to make a point.
