Bioluminscent gene splicing has been done numerous times. It’d actually be neat as decor. I’m not sure what ethics issue they could really find, the Luciferin/luciferase reaction is a simple one they do in university level biology or chemistry labs.
That’s definitely one of my concerns also. But hey not with them anymore so I wouldn’t be able to give much insight (though given the amount of contracts we used to win, I’d have no doubt it would be secure).
This part of development is actually already done and implemented in some parts of Japan, where the HQ is. The aim is mostly to evolve for monitoring purposes which is where it could be along the lines of ‘morally grey’ to many people.
maybe the lighting wasn’t strong enough to replace the lights we have now? Idk i would love that kind of plant life as decor around my house.
well, like with me and my wife. We talked for a solid year before we even tried to meet. We both wanted to see if any weird warning signs popped up.
When we finally did meet, her father was present the entire time and it stayed that way for a few days.
I visited for a few days every month for a few months until we started feeling comfortable around each other.
Then I made the 500 mile move up there where she lived and we tried dating for a while to see how it’d work.
Her family was watching me like I had told them Id been in prison for burglary or something
(I have no record of any kind, btw…just in case someone here tries to misrepresent me)
We dated for a long while then got married. Lived up there for a few years, then decided to move back to my home state so she could find better work.
15 years later, its better today than it was yesterday.
it’s not that, you can get some intense bioluminesence, I think it’s probably just a matter of ‘market’ vs ‘costs to develop’. It’d be more suited for a hobby. I think it’d look cool, I already love having those little LED flower lamps in my yard at night :3
how are tree’s and plants that glow morally gray in terms of ethics to people?
ignorance mostly.
Ah I forget, people only see short term profits instead of long term and money is what makes the world spin sadly.
Would you want to spend $1M dollars in development, with another $10M in labour and overhead for production to only sell maybe $100000 in products?
Having electric lamps with constant light bulb changes and maintenance would probably cost more than a self sustaining tree. Time would pay it off. Plus if a car hits a tree there would be barely any damage to the tree, if a car hits a lamp post that lamp post is gone.
it doesn’t though. All of those things are dirt cheap atm and will continue to be.
that’s not true either. You could knock the tree over and kill it, and it’d take decades for another one to grow to the proper size of an older tree. A new lampost could be installed the same day.
Trees and plants glowing probably wouldn’t be an issue.
But like I said the morally grey part is when technology moves from solar panel streetlights to monitoring/surveillance for the intents of public safety.
eh i just want to see a more “fantasy setting” when it comes to how cities / towns are built. Plus it would do wonders to the environment.
ah that, yeah i could see a tons of issues popping up in the usa for that stuff. Citizens here really hate any privacy being infringed on and will find any excuse or reason to make a scene about it.
they already have solar powered cameras everywhere to catch ‘speeders’ people bent over for it cause they were sold a lie it’d keep the streets safer.
which is why it’d be fun to do things as a hobby as see where it goes. All it takes is someone with a ton of their own disposable capital to bankroll your hobby as a new industry provided they have enough interest and fervour behind it to see it through.
with good reason. Governments are not trustworthy institutions and neither are corporations for that matter.
I try to look at it from both sides and if the government and corporations weren’t so corrupt i would agree with these kinds of things but as you said they cant be trusted and i agree with the citizens here on that.
Reminds me of a paraphrased quote, I can’t quite recall to whom it is attributed, perhaps John Adams: if humans were angels we wouldn’t need government.
I will only trust someone insofar as their willingness to subject themselves to the same rules is adhered to, and even then I’d not wish to be forced to parttake but rather have it be voluntary, at my discretion. For example someone demanding gun control from behind a bevy of heavily armed security is a fiend and a hypocrite. I would at the very least consider them coming from a place of genuine honesty if they waived all such security for themselves as they wish me to waive for myself and my loved ones but I’d still desire my ability to opt out of such a proposal to be respected.
Police are so corrupt in my area and its a small town next to a bigger town / city and I just think to myself Police do much more damage than good why do we keep them around, why do we fund them. At this point it would just be better for everyone to defend themselves instead of being worried about people who are actively trying to get people to give up their hard earned money and time.
The police at this point is no different than a mafia demanding tribute. Mafia might beat the crap out of you or even kill you but Police can ruin your entire life and get you in prison depending on how well they play it out. One would think the court would help but they are no better at this point.
Edit to prevent double post: I work in a waiver house (like a group home but smaller) in neighboorhood with full of druggies and theres lots of shouting and cussing here and there, and been some gun shots. Yes i’m uneasy but i am a lot more fearful and afraid when i see a random cop car nearby.
Cops are meant to make us feel protected but i feel like my life is about to be ruined with the slightest misstep.
Read up about the ‘Battle of Athens, Tennessee’ to see how not too long ago how Americans responded to such out of control corruption in their local law enforcement. That is really a shame you have to deal with corruption of that nature.
