I’m trying to upgrade my heirlooms and one I have is the 1h sword from defeating Garrosh in SoO raid. These heirlooms upgrade 3 tiers instead of 5 like other heirlooms. I’ve purchased every tier of upgrade scabbard and they all say “item is not a valid target”
Is there a way to upgrade these? Tried googling an answer but all I found was a post about it with no reply in the bug forums and a blue response on the FAQ page that looked like an auto response that stated to upgrade it the same way you upgrade normal heirlooms.
Hellscream’s Doomblade is the one I have. They’re higher ilvl than other heirlooms, have gem slots, and can only be upgraded 3 times instead of 5 like normal heirlooms. It was from defeating Garrosh while he was current content. I believe you could only get one per account, but there was an option for most weapon/offhand options. The ability to get them was removed once the WoD prepatch event went live.
Those items were designed to take players from level 90 to level 100. After the level squish, they were 1-39, then the next upgrade go to 44, then 49 or 50. Interestingly, the Wowhead link shows no change from level 2 to 3.
Anyway, these items are designed to be upgraded three times. Look at it this way: since they start at 39, they essentially start with two upgrades.
Yes, I get that they’ve already got the first two upgrades. I’ve purchased every single scabbard up to the newest one that goes up to level 60 and every single one of them says that the heirloom isn’t a valid target for the heirloom upgrade.

Might have found a solution. Think it’s just wonky due to the item being higher ilvl than normal heirlooms? Also for some reason, this would not work on my max level toon, but did work when I tried it on a toon which was at the appropriate level to use the heirloom?
Logged onto my lvl 40 warrior and purchased the heirloom scabbard which raises ilvl to 45. Since the heirloom is higher ilvl than normal heirlooms, it was already at lvl 45 without any upgrades being added. But it let me use the lvl 45 scabbard on it which raised it’s lvl to 49. So I guess the next scabbard will raise it to 59, and the last will raise it to ilvl 69?
Still not sure why it worked on my lvl 40 warrior but not on my lvl 60 warrior.
I see. I would suspect that one of two things are true:
Because the items are no longer obtainable, you are not able to upgrade them. They needed to be upgraded during MoP, with whatever we used to upgrade back then.
It’s a bug that the current upgrade tokens don’t work on them. You would need to put this in the Bug Report Forum, so they can see it.
