I admit I had unborn val, and mostly had to come up with something for ikky…which, at the time I used a coastal sandpiper from legion in many cases-not all worked though. Saying that, there is a crab that I am finding called the chitterspine [needler, skitterling or hissing] that is in naz that shares the abilities of ikky. I used him for one of the fights suggested, and he seems to do the trick.
I personally try the fights on my own first, rather than depend on the guides for this reason. And if this doesn’t work, go through the comments on wowhead and mix up pets until I have something solid [in cases I don’t have all suggested pets leveled, which is often].
The reason most of the guides mention those pets is because they are pets that a lot of people have.
People who share their strategies want their strategies to be useful, so they suggest pets that other pet battlers are likely to have.
Unborn Val’kyr has been a recommended pet for pet battles since MoP, so a lot of pet battlers have chosen to collect that pet over the years. Ikky was a quest reward in WoD, and can be puchased on the AH if you didn’t do that quest.
If after however many years they’ve been around and the weekly when that rears it’s head… hasn’t been enough to get someone into it. I doubt being forced into getting two of the more OP pets and doing battles in the two new zones is going to really change too many people into loving it like you have.
Feels more like Blizz is pushing a certain playstyle and offering rewards greater than the actual difficulty of the activity should give.
They are indeed great. Blizz needs to reward mythic quality gear from them as part of the raiding with leashes theme. Pet battlers should not be forced into other content to get gear so they can go out and battle.
No, that’s just a strat that happens to work with most of the new pet battles. You might have a point if those two pets were 100% required and you couldn’t substitute them at all.
I got into pet battling for the Crazy Cat Lady title. I wanted to get Xu-Fu from the Celestial Tournament as part of going after the title. That meant collecting & levelling the pets I’d need for the Celestial Tournament.
Once I started collecting & levelling pets, I just kept going.
At the start of this patch I did not own Ikky (I sold him into pet slavery long ago) so I did all the fights without him until I broke down and bought one like two weeks later(after getting all the rep from each fight). Just because he definitely does make things easier when just trying to get dailies done. However, my point being they are not the only two pets that work. A lot of people don’t have unborn either. If you check on Xu fu-there are many other strategies and pets used as well.
Public Service Announcement: Squirt will be in your Garrison level 2 (3 ?) menagerie on July 23rd, level pets 1 to 25 in just a few easy fights depending on your buffs. Wear your Safari Hat, get the shoulder enchant, have a few buff snacks and beat that little girl and make her cry. Yes, I am a monster.
I would say such complaints will eventually get Unborn/Ikky (or similar Flock style pets) nerfed, but that’s uusally only when an even smaller niche of player, the PvP pet battler, complains, like they did with Teroclaw.
But, really, just get the pets. Ikky can be bought on the AH, and Unborn’s respawn time was greatly reduced a while back. While you’re buying an Ikky, get a Terrible Turnip for its ability to do damage without killing a pet. Will help you capture the ones you need.
The problem is not specific to the Val’kyr and Ikky: they’re just a low hanging fruit to suggest, a combo people know well and understand. You can achieve a similar effect with a Stormborne Whelpling and a Lil’Bling using Call Lightning, Make it Rain and Inflation. Or buff a durable Elemental pet like a Fel Flame to shred Mechanicals to pieces.
The problem is with how good stacking damage buffs and defense debuffs is on single target fights.
