FWIW, I few threads about this in bug reports. Seems like being a bug isn’t enough these days.
I noticed this last night in the key I was doing as well, I couldn’t tab target the explosives unless it was the only other thing on the screen in the current moment. This feels terrible.
Explosive used to automatically be in combat with the player.
Since 8.3 patch you are no longer in combat with explosives at the start of the encounter. Tab target prioritizes enemies in combat so it skips over explosive in favor of every other enemy until you manually target and damage the explosive.
The benefit to this is that of you’re trying to click on an obelisk while explosive is up you won’t be interrupted.
The downside is that you have no reliable way of targeting explosive anymore.

And regardless…original point reiterated, having to build a macro, add an add-on, use a weak aura, is stupid.
Blizz runs a hot dog stand and doesn’t provide ketchup because tney know we’ll figure out a workaround.
Can confirm these problems. We had problems the other day but barreled through the dungeon with a mix of unreliable tabbing and clicking. Tried ML tonight and we just decided to leave on the second boss. This is broken. This used to be one of what I would call “fairer” affixes, as in, it’s a mechanic, you learn it, you do it. Now it’s just trash like many of the others. It’s worth noting that both tabbing and clicking were unreliable for us. I had trouble clicking on ones that were many feet away with nothing near them, and certainly couldn’t click any that spawned under the boss. On a side note, this has always been annoying as a bear tank. I do about 24K single target dps and tons of aoe now with my corruption, and yet I have basically zero always on demand abilities that kill these with one shot. Mangle will, but it has a cooldown, moonfire takes 2 or 3, thrash and swipe don’t work in AOE and don’t work or don’t destroy with one shot when targeted, add that to not being able to target and this is now a garbage “mechanic” like so many other “we use the UI and the color of things to obscure your ability to play that exist in this game, we’re awesome game designers!”
For anyone that has not read the hotfix post, they are correcting this issue.
It was a failed attempt to counter explosives not letting players into obelisks.
Glad they finally let us know they acknowledged the problem in some way.
