Turn Gathering Professions into Secondary Professions

I have every profession covered over many alts. But not bc I thought it would be fun to level them all… How does it hurt the game making it so people don’t have to log into alts and mail juggle mats? We’re just removing the annoyance.

All the gathering and crafting “effort” is still being done by the player.

I’m not understanding your point. People who currently do gathering would lose their professions so you could get 3. Why don’t you just ask for a full return to the garrison model, a new garrison in every expansion?

Dude I have so many alts and they all already have what I described above. If you want to do the alt life then be my guest, but I don’t think it’s a bad thing to encourage folks to focus on one character either. It’s hardly ‘free’ if I’m actively putting in effort leveling the skill. Me doing it on separate characters or doing it on one doesn’t change that.

This was done in WOD and nobody liked it.

The gathering Professions are NOT worth their time.

It’s ALSO Blizzard artificially inflating the professions by treating the gathering ones as JUST as important as the Crafting ones.

And, I think, the issue here is that most* people playing WoW don’t try to see what COULD be, rather than what IS.

  • Most: I get that this is a guess. I could well be wrong.

How exactly do players LOSE professions when they are rolled into the baseline character profile?

Except you just grabbed my profession away from me so you could have it on your character. My “alt life” was sacrificed to give you 3 professions. You outright admitted you thought it would be a great idea to force people who like to play alts to play fewer. Or none. Or not play at all, because who needs those subscribers anyway?

You haven’t killed Gods or probably picked through Talbuk turds to find an outhouse key either.

You’re doing a lot of “no it shouldn’t” based on a lot of hooey.

That is a huge stretch, like not even close. And lets be real at least, what everybody hated was being stuck in their garrison.

This isn’t different then me going onto my alt. There’s zero difference.

No I didn’t. I said that I don’t think it’s a bad thing to encourage folks focus on one character vs. many. There’s nothing being forced. In contrast, do you think it’s fine to FoRcE me to play multiple characters?

Well this escalated quickly. Just what?

Blizzard tying both Leveling and Endgame story to within the Garrison rather than outside WAS the single largest sub killer for WoD at the time…

Wrong! Everybody could mine all ores and pick all herbs. No stretch at all!

You know what a lot of people hated.

When they were forced to drop crafting professions in order to accrue crafting mats only dropped by gathering professions.

That was a massively unimpressive decision that had a distinctly negative impact that was resolved for the next expansion.

Forcing professions on players is just another form of arbitrary exclusion that hinders more players than it helps.

This.

Other games support open crafting. want the one who does it all…that is fine. they don’t pad the books needed in an alt army. want 1 char…well have at it.

Want a gathering crafter who does it all? well in eve all this requires is time and money. Money to buy skill books, time to train them up.

And this was how my main, and other chars, became gathering crafting combat pilots. Just have the one dedicated industrial char (eve’s crafters). they make everything short of capitals. Only 1 because some of them exotic manufacturing skills ain’t cheap. and some are a pita to train up.

combat main still makes a fair bit of tech 1 stuff though. T1 Ships, ammo/scripts, modules…they can do that. he also mines. Something only eve players will get but when you take a combat fit rokh and put on mining lasers…that stuff works pretty decent. its no hulk, but it pulls in some minerals lol.

I like this idea a lot as someone who has more gathering toons than is healthy.

You mean like this?

It not only adds the +10 to gathering you normally get from carrying around the tools, it replaces the mandatory other crafting tools too.

From the Comments section

Replaces these basic tools:
Arclight Spanner
Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor
High-Powered Bolt Gun (the tool, not the ‘use’)
Blacksmith Hammer
Skinning Knife
Mining Pick
Herbalist’s Spade
Jeweler’s Kit
Virtuoso Inking Set
Runed Copper Rod (and all other rods)

and these miscellaneous combined tools:
Hammer Pick
Bladed Pickaxe
Gnomish Army Knife (not the res function)

100% support this idea OP.

Is RL you going out into the world where people do those things all around you? Do you have herbs you can (and would benefit from) picking in your front yard? Do you have copper deposits laying around your neighborhood? Have you killed any animals recently that you would have skinned?

It doesn’t have to be a 1-1 comparison. This game is just that, RP. We are not coming on this game of magic and war to live our regular mundane lives.

I can learn a profession, and unlearn it to learn more. Then I can learn it again. Save me the trouble and let my character remember how to pick a flower while I figure out how to mash up flowers and put them in a vial.

Yup. Here is my take from another thread on what the WoD garrison gathering did to the social/family guilds I was a part of back then:

Those people are long gone. They are never coming back. Maybe it’s ok to just let all the gathering professions be picked up now, because Blizzard has already culled a significant part of the player base from the game.

I just get a certain - be careful what you ask for, you just might get it - vibe from the suggestion we devalue the gathering profs to insignificance…

I cant remember the last time I sold ore, leather, herbs or cloth on the AH. Its pointless because of all that stuff in massive amounts from gold farmers. (Sure, some of it is legit farmers but they get swallowed in the massive amounts from the farmers.)

I think this is an idea whose time has come. There is nothing stop anyone from still gathering it for sale (because not everyone is going to stop at every node along the way to where they were going) but it also ensures anyone can collect stuff themselves instead of having to go to an alt.
