Trade Chat is Incredibly Toxic Tonight

When they get suspended or banned for breaking it? Then it will have its intended effect alright. I mean if you break the rules that were up in your face and more visible, its harder to fight it.

You completely misunderstood me, because I think you completely misunderstand the 1st amendment.

The reason why we have the 1st amendment is because FREEDOM OF SPEECH is the best way for the marginalized and oppressed people to regain power and uplift themselves.

Hate Speech Laws ensure that the oppressed are silenced. Remember that when you create a rule that subjectively defines what “hate” is, that some day it WILL be used against you.

We do not defend speech that we love; we MUST defend the speech which we hate, because otherwise the things which we hold dear–such as equality for everyone, human rights, etc. WILL be deemed hate speech.

Complaining about governmental oppression, or racist policies, or genocide, WILL be at some point designated as hate speech.

I’m gonna stop you right there.

This is not a government. This is a civilian company. They can make whatever rules they want and enforce them however they want within the confines of the law.

As multiple people have already pointed out to you: you are essentially on private (as in, not government-owned) property when you are interacting in Blizzard spaces. When you are on someone else’s property, e.g. my front porch, I can tell you to leave if I don’t like the way you are behaving.

This has no bearing on the constitution or the Bill of Rights or any slippery-slope fallacy. It’s a private (non-governmental) entity making choices for themselves, which they are allowed to do as per the laws of the nation.

If you don’t like the way they want people to behave on their front porch, you can go stand on someone else’s porch. That is also well within your rights.

I rarely speak in chat.

You misunderstood me.

I did not say that the 1st amendment applies to a private company. I spoke about the importance of the 1st amendment and explained to you WHY freedom of speech is crucial in society.

You are free to believe that censorship is the way to go; so far that has not been true everywhere that censorship has been enforced.

If you want to uphold personal freedoms then one must also recognize a civilian company’s personal freedom to make decisions about the kind of space it wants to maintain for itself.

Otherwise you are now required to let BLM protesters hang out in your living room and call you racist. Because, free speech, right? So they can sit and argue politics and call you names and do whatever they like right there on your couch, forever, and you can’t do anything about it.

Also just a reminder that no one is being censored. You can say whatever you want. You just have to suffer the consequence of being disinvited from these spaces if this non-governmental entity decides it doesn’t like hearing it. :slightly_smiling_face:

WoW is designed the way WoW is designed. Other MMOs don’t have the same trolling/harassment problems that WoW has. Why is WoW’s general chat full of political gaslighting and trolling? Why are WoW’s random groups so incredibly hostile? Why are WoW’s forums a cesspool?

Because Blizzard is fine with that. If they weren’t fine with that, they would have taken real and effective steps.

And to anyone who thinks they’re being “silenced” by the clarified social contract. Number one, you’ve never been louder. People who are silenced are silent. You are not. Number two, there are people who should be silenced in certain situations.

Some of you are hecklers at a show that we all paid to see. Your noise just keeps us from enjoying the show. I, for one, will clap as you are escorted from the venue.

Honestly it’s telling of the kind of lives people lead outside of WoW …

How many places in the world are we expected to behave like civil human beings? Like, 99% of them, right? You go to a grocery store and pick a loud, obnoxious fight with a random stranger and they will escort you out of the store. This isn’t like, a brand new era of humanity or something lol.

Well, they can, but they are too lazy to enforce it

Trade toxic ? this is new

I really think there’s something to the idea that we’re living boring and comfortable enough lives that we have to make up things to be mad about now. Like having something to fight/struggle against is human nature or something, idk. Weird time to be alive for sure

Yea because Blozzard is pushing this game in wrong direction. You know in this game there is two type of players.

  1. The ones who get insulted, they throw insults as well or they just ignore it and keep playing
  2. The other ones are the dangerous one, they complain, post complains on forums so they can share it with everyone, and express how they feel threatened in a virtual game where no one knows real identity of anyone. Unless that person shares it.
When I said blizzard is going wrong direction with this game, I meant by they are adjusting the game towards 2nd type of people.

I’ve been called so many times and here I am. Alive, unharmed

No, my friend, I think it is you who misunderstands the 1A. The purpose of the 1A is not to let people say whatever they want whenever they want and without consequence. The 1A simply means that the government cannot arrest you for the things that you say.

World of Warcraft, Activision, Blizzard… none of these are government agencies or entities. They are privately owned businesses, and if they owners/CEOs want to put certain restrictions on speech in place, they are free do so. Nobody is being attacked, nobody is being silenced. They are simply stating that they will not tolerate offensive, abusive, hateful, derogatory language on their platform. And they have every right in the world to implement those rules.

It’s like if I invite you to my house, but you start spouting racist, homophobic language, I have every right to ask you to stop, and I even have every right to ask you to leave my home. I’m not attacking you. I’m not silencing you. I’m just telling you that I don’t have to tolerate your behavior and I’m showing you the door. If you want to use such language elsewhere that will allow it, then fine. Go to another house (game), but I think you’ll find that most people and most places do not tolerate hateful, derogatory, offensive language anymore. It isn’t 1950 anymore. Be more respectful of other people/players.

If you don’t know how to interact with people without using such language, the problem doesn’t lie with WoW/Blizzard, it lies with the player.

And, for the record, nobody is saying you can’t use such language. You absolutely can. But do not forget that actions have consequences and if you want to call somebody an offensive name, don’t be surprised if you get reported or banned (depending on severity of the offense).

I don’t understand how folks think toxic online behavior is unique to WoW in anyway. Every MMO I’ve ever played from Everquest in 99’ to now has had some level of toxic behavior/language… as long as people have avatars to hide behind there will be toxicity.

Oh no… people can’t be racist, sexist, all around terrible people in chat anymore…

If you are mad at this because you can no longer call people terrible things online and believe that you have the right to say anything you want to anyone, maybe you should re-evaluate yourself and grow up.

and they can get banned and then either quit or change and be a better person

They can’t even provide a safe work environment. Idk what they were thinking throwing out this contract to the players.

This is something I notice as well. Like I think not enough people know how fortunate we are to have a roof, daily meals, running water, and an internet connection. Being grateful for the small things in life can really help to put things in perspective.
