I know a guy who got banned for gold buying… for two weeks.

He didn’t get banned. He got suspended. People really need to learn the difference between the definition of banned and suspended. I know over two dozen players who admitted they bought gold and only know of one who got a 72 hour suspensions.

Yeah I have honestly never met anyone who’s been suspended and have met loads of people who have said they have bought it. Hell in classic I was stealing a bots tags because he was using swp to tag them so I could hit them and get the mob tag then he would kill them for me and literally did it for 2 weeks because he used the same gold farming spot so I could get his mobs and mine, he messaged me when he was online one time telling me to stop stealing his tags and I told him I’d been doing it every night for 2 weeks. He admitted to botting in chat, literally laughed at me and said who cares blizzard won’t ban me, and never got banned. Blizzards effort towards rmt and Botting has been an absolute joke.

Yes, they were. It happened to guys in my guild. They were out for a couple of weeks.
I guess technically this would be a suspension and not a true ban, but if that’s the definition we’re going by, then nobody was “banned” for BG afking either-- suspensions only.
Okay, loads of people were suspended for afking in BG’s during som. Only your guild suffered from gold buying suspensions though. Weird, maybe blizz directed all their anti RMT prowess on one single guild and allowed the rest of season of master card free reign over duel wield credit card purchases.
You don’t have to look very hard to see that it happened well outside of my guild alone. In fact, some people even suggest that Blizzard went too far with the ban waves.

I’ve seen people say that Blizzard isn’t harsh enough with their punitive action against gold buying, and I would completely agree, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone suggest in earnest that Blizzard did literally nothing at all, lol.
Banning less than 1% of gold buyers is basically the same as doing nothing. If I can buy 6 months worth of gold with a >1% chance of being suspended for 2 weeks max, how is that a deterrent? Sure, they have suspended the odd person. But sounds like you think they have actually done a good job 
I been banned, dont care if people know I bought gold… havent bought in a while. Still dont care if people do but they will ban for it.

My guild actually added players… and people paid off their debts to each other… everyone got fast flying.
There was a lot of circus hawking in Ogrimar , casinos and “profession kits”. It was a kick to see the activity.
I think most players think " let me play"

And you obviously didn’t read the article not once did they mention numbers. It was just blizzard saying their numbers doubled. They didn’t say it was 1 million new subs due to classic.

The thing that makes me sad about this is that everything you said here could be accomplished by just playing the game.

Absolutely true. The problem is when they do release the token everyone now is at a disadvantage unless they participate
