Its believed that it takes a Lich King to really do it.
During the Order Hall campaign it was through your artifact weapon and the Lich King granting you greater power through his link to you that supposedly allowed it, but it was never really fully explained, nor what Blizzards plan is now that Bolvar is no longer king.
Its possible Bolvar still has the intrinsic power to do it since he didnāt get killed when the Crown was taken from him. We just donāt know if he lost the ability or not.
Storyline-wise with the whole Crown of Wills thing, Iām not 100% certain. However, given that Blizzard has been wanting to gradually open up more classes for playable races, it is hard for me to imagine any future playable races to not get Death Knight as an option ever. As such, Iād like to think something would get written to allow more Death Knights, along with an edit to the allied race/Pandaren Death Knight area to reflect the change.
Still, itās hard to really know at present how Blizzard feels about such things. We also wonāt know until we get more playable races in the future, as well as what is done with more classes for Dracthyr. So even with the current philosophy of more race/class combos, there is some concern regarding Death Knights until we see something.
I suppose in a way, it is a bit of a silly concern. That and being worried that Dracthyr would be treated as a ācompromiseā of not adding in reptilian races people want, which is silly since Dracthyr, Sethrak, and Saurok are all unique compared to each other to be playable together. I do think they are concerns worth mentioning occasionally so that we have some form of feedback.
Ultimately, if Blizzard wants more races to be Death Knights, I think something will get written to allow it. Whether it makes sense or not. And honestly, I hope it is an option, since one of my Saurok characters Iād want to make is a Saurok Death Knight, assuming Saurok ever become playable of course.
Sounds like theyāll happen from the way Ion was talking, itāll just be a while as theyāre wanting to play it out via story.
I figure theyāll just do something like I mentioned above, powerful death knights raising new recruits.
Could easily add a little storyline explaining why, tie it back into Maldraxxus or somethingā¦needing more soldiers to defend Azeroth.
Primus could teach it if itās not something Bolvar and company could already do.
Yeah, they really need to just start regularly adding the races people want. A whole dragonkin grouping with the dracthyr, tarasek, drakonid. Then could have saurok and sethrak.
This was mentioned again in a recent interview Bellular did with Ion recently. It does seem like Dracthyr may get more classes, but I donāt see that affecting chances of playable Saurok, Sethrak, or Drakonids at all.
It is moreso what Blizzardās mindset could be when considering new playable races. Itās why I hope that they donāt consider Dracthyr as a ādefinitive reptilian raceā and wonāt consider other reptilian races people want to see. That line of thinking is extra silly if you consider how many flavors of Elves, Dwarves, and other races there are.
The uncertainty of internal thinking and marketing is still worrying, of course. Otherwise, I see no reason why Dracthyr, Drakonids, Saurok, and Sethrak could all be playable together.
I do agree with this for the most part.
There have been a lot of races people have been wanting playable since the game first came out and across the gameās life. A lot of them help fill out a niche not currently available and offer a good variety to the character creation screen. Making those races playable, and not referring specifically to the ones I want of course, would go a long way in making people happy and show Blizzard is listening.
This isnāt to say never make something new playable. After all, a lot of races were new to Warcraft at one point. But I do think seeing requested playable races become actually playable would have a lot of meaning and raise a lot of excitement and interest in the game in general. Especially when a lot of them either are already part of the Horde/Alliance or could have a lot of great features from being fleshed out.
Just my own personal opinion, of course. Itās far from perfect, but itās how I honestly feel when it comes to new playable races.
More playable races means attracting players who might not normally be interested in playing the game otherwise. As I mentioned before, a lot of requested races bring in a new niche that gets filled while adding some more variety to the character creation screen.
Case in point, one of the big reasons Iāve never played FF14 and have no interest in doing so is because of the playable race selection. For a game that is designed for you to focus on one character, none of the playable races particularly interest me at all, and while more races like Hrothgar would be great, I donāt know what the chances are theyāll add more races that arenāt just anime-like humans with different animal features stapled onto them. Very frustrating. Moreso when a race that would get me to try it (Bangaa) are stuck in NPC status.
With WoW on the other hand, there is a decent variety of playable races and huge potential for even more variety should several NPC races become playable. It has a pretty good opportunity of having a pretty great playable race selection, which hasnāt been seen too much in a MMO for the most part since Everquest.
I feel like the familiarity of requested playable races is something that would be particularly exciting to see announced. I know I felt that when I saw Frogloks become playable in Everquest, who were my most wanted playable race at the time. Iām sure plenty of people would be excited at some NPC races becoming playable, remembering them and being interested in checking their story and gameplay out.
Sorry for the rambling. I could go on, but Iād likely be typing many more paragraphs. I usually try to focus on a few specific races I want playable, which would make the game feel perfect to me and be a dream come true, but most other new playable races would just be icing on the cake for me and a dream come true for others, which would be fun to see people celebrate as a result.
Sharing another art piece from DeviantArt today. This one is of the Seraphon (Warhammer) fighting against a Daemon army, which sounds like was official artwork for one of the Seraphon Battle Tomes. This was created by the user named AnthonyDevine and was uploaded to the website on March 1st, 2017.
Looking at the Lizardmen/Seraphon from Warhammer is a great source of idea inspiration for Saurok. There have been some signs before that Saurok in general were inspired by them, which explains some similarities.
I imagine if Saurok ever became playable, we could see Saurok armies in promotional artwork for whatever expansion they would debut in like the above. Itās something that I think would look pretty awesome and showcase a number of cool things about them.
I suppose a Mogu army would make the most sense for them going after, but there could be some other enemies. Seeing the Daemons there make me imagine Saurok against the Legion, which I think even the Legion would be scared of a bunch of angry lizards with sharp teeth.
As usual, Iāll continue to find general Lizardmen related art pieces to share for the usual Saurok idea inspiration!
Iāve linked videos of Lizardman/Aeon from the Soul Calibur series before, for the usual Saurok idea inspiration of course, and I thought Iād show a video of Lizardman from Soul Calibur 2. Seems like Iām going back in the series, given I started with 6 and been going down in the series since then. Ah well, theyāre still good Lizardman related resources to share.
Video here:
Some awesome scale patterns and Lizardmen-like movements to show off for the usual Saurok idea inspiration. Lizardman was a bit more fleshed out in later games, but still looks great here.
On a similar note, there are rumors going around of a Soul Calibur remaster or collection going on, which I hope comes true. Soul Calibur is a favorite series of mine, not just for Lizardman/Aeon of course, so to see it actually get some love and attention is great. If it becomes true, Iāll be sure to share videos of Lizardman/Aeon in it when theyāre available.
Lizardman/Aeon looks pretty awesome in the Soul Calibur games. I feel like he continuously gets better aesthetics and animations and such as the series went on, with 5 having some really great ones.
And while on the subject of Soul Calibur, Iāll link a video showing off Lizardman in Soul Calibur 1 here:
A lot of similarity between this one and the one in Soul Calibur 2, but still great to show off for animations and such for Saurok idea inspiration. I donāt think Lizardman/Aeon was in the first game in the series, Soul Edge, but weāll see if that Soul Calibur remaster/collection rumor comes true. As I said, Iāll happily link some videos of that for Saurok idea inspiration.
The new patch came out today, so there is lots of stuff to look at and explore!
As I said before, I highly doubt anything Saurok related will come from anything here or likely at all in Dragonflight. At best, looking at the Tarasek and seeing if they get fleshed out at all might be interesting, but they have no known relation to Saurok, given that they different species with Tarasek being dragon related while Saurok are lizard related. And while Iām not against Tarasek being playable at all, I would much prefer Saurok being playable as a personal preference.
If I do see anything of Saurok interest, Iāll be sure to report it here, but itāll likely be awhile before such things appear in-game or in some form of WoW media.
Doing my usual rounds on DeviantArt, I came across some art pieces that were mugshots of Argonians (Elder Scrolls) that were really well done and would be great for some Saurok customization idea inspiration. I picked out a few to show off for this post and Iāll likely show off more in another post as I find them.
The following art pieces were created by the user named VictoriaDAEDRA:
These are really good pieces of artwork for some Saurok customization idea inspiration. Scale colors and patterns are always a given, but some ideas for head options (spikes, horns, etc) are also here.
If Saurok were to get fleshed out, I would imagine seeing a bunch of new aesthetics features, along with features of current NPCās. Saurok really have the potential to be a race that can really look unique compared to different players, much like how Dracthyr can be. Moreso if several IRL lizard aesthetics are implemented.
Iāll be looking for more art pieces for the usual Saurok idea inspiration. I really do think they help with that a lot.
You might remember some time ago, I did a post about the Saurok Samurai you can fight as an opponent in that arena area in Pandaria. If you need a refresher, this is the post:
In order to illustrate how a Saurok Samurai could look, I came across a video of Soul Calibur IIIās Lizardman character, where the ending for Mitsurugi, a Samurai character, was edited to include Lizardman instead of Mitsurugi, along with a random NPC replaced by Sophitia, another playable character, forā¦some reason.
Video is here:
Not all Saurok are Samurai, but if some Samurai themes were ever incorporated in some Saurok tribesā cultures, that could be interesting. Not to mention that becoming a samurai is a long, arduous journey, so it says a lot that Saurok were able to become and master that. Far from the mindless angry beasts that most others would view them as. Sounds like something I could think more on in a future post!
