The Unofficial Saurok Playable Race Discussion Megathread! šŸŠ

A video showing how to make ā€œArgonian Swamp Shrimp Boilā€ popped up in my YouTube recommendations. Itā€™s a recipe that came out of the official Elder Scrolls cookbook. Video is here:

It seems like something that Saurok would enjoy. I can imagine them trying to make new recipes of what they fish up. Iā€™m sure they would have quite the interesting cookbook! :lizard:

Now that the devs, if they are to be trusted at all when it comes to that sort of stuff, apparently intend to give more depth to the ā€œmonster racesā€, I wonder about the future depiction of the Saurok in general. I hope they will benefit from this new direction. Much could be told about them : their perspective on their pseudo-Titanforged legacy ; their history of resisting the Mogu ; their place within the racial landscape of Pandaria ; their culture of warband and raidingā€¦

I havenā€™t really heard an official comment on giving more depth to ā€œmonster races,ā€ but if true, it could be really interesting. For Saurok, it really depends how they would be implemented and treated in the future.

As it stands currently, theyā€™re all over the place in depiction. Some are feral-like while others have more sentience and will work with other races in enemy factions, as seen in the Bilge Rats Pirates. So itā€™s possible weā€™ll see more of either of these types regardless of what happens.

However, Saurok do have a lot of potential if they were to get fleshed out (without more flesh shaping magic involved, of course). An unnatural race that was created to be slave soldiers that gained freedom and are trying to find their place in the world (of Warcraft!)? It could very much write itself if given the chance.

The specifics of such would really depend on the type of tribe or tribes it gets applied to and where they are located. I donā€™t really expect them to be benevolent, but I could see more of an evolution in sentience and being more willing to work with other races to a greater goal.

Something I am curious about in this line of thinking is if we see an Exploring Azeroth: Pandaria book ever made. If something might be written about the Saurok there and if some have made peace with the Pandarens, who are still trying to make peace with them. It would add quite a bit to Saurok being fleshed out if so, whether it is tribes we know of or some new ones, and some things could be applied to Saurok in general we meet out in the world (of Warcraft!).

As I said before, there is something amusingly ironic about Mogu creating Saurok to help them rule the world (of Warcraft!) only to have it both be their downfall and also help save and protect the world (of Warcraft!) from them and other threats. Itā€™s among several reasons I support playable Horde Saurok so much. :lizard:

Came across another cool art piece I wanted to share that comes from Everquest 2. This time of an Iksar Deflier fighting Venril Sathir, an infamous evil Iksar Necromancer that has had a presence in Everquest 1 and 2. It was created by TheFaeFae and uploaded to DeviantArt on April 28th, 2010.

ā€œNotable Norrathian EQ2 Entryā€ by TheFaeFae on DeviantArt

First off, the Iksar you see on the right, the Defiler, is a female Iksar. So this is a good way of showing a female Lizardmen race in armor, who looks really good. Especially with the spell effects. The armor also really looks good on them.

The Iksar on the left is Venril Sathir, and while a pretty big MMORPG boss, has a cool design that could inspire Saurok cloth armor designs and also scale color options. Especially for Saurok Warlocks (or Necromancers if that ever becomes a playable class).

Itā€™s a great art piece in general that appears to have won a contest a long time ago. It makes me happy, since Iksar were one of my favorite races in the Everquest games. Shocking, I know.

But as you can see, Iksar were really popular since they showed up playable in Everquest 1. I do think weā€™d see people who played Iksar characters get interested in WoW if Saurok became playable, since theyā€™d be much closer to that Lizardman theme than Dracthyr, who are much closer to a dragon theme. I imagine a lot of people would recreate Iksar characters theyā€™ve had before, myself included. :lizard:

It seems like prepatch stuff from Dragonflight is on the alpha/beta now, aside from Dracthyr/Evoker stuff which I assume is forthcoming. Rumors are the prepatch could come by late October, so it could explain why weā€™re starting to see prepatch stuff.

As far as Iā€™m aware, Dracthyr jokes/flirts havenā€™t been added in yet. Itā€™ll be something I plan to share in the future when available. If anything comes close to what I have in the main post of the megathread for Saurok jokes/flirts, Iā€™ll have to edit accordingly and think of new ones for them.

On the bright side, Iā€™ve seen some Dracthyr customization shared by players on the forums and the Dracthyr creations they made look beautiful. It makes me think that Saurok would also look awesome with their own unique scale colors and patterns, along with features of RL reptiles to go with them.

Iā€™ll be sure to post news on the prepatch when official announcements are made, where I assume weā€™ll be able to make our Dracthyr characters. Iā€™ll likely share more Dracthyr customization videos when theyā€™re available on live servers to see if anything has been added or changed since alpha. As I said before, the practice of working on scale customization can help other reptilian races that become playable, including Saurok. :lizard:

I came across a neat video of someone who crafts things like terrains and buildings for their TTRPG game sessions. This one in particular is showing them creating a Lizard Man camp for D&D and Pathfinder:

Sharing this for anyone interested in it for their own TTRPG sessions and also for the usual Saurok idea inspiration. Canā€™t have enough of the latter, of course! :lizard:

In relation to the last video, this one popped up in my Youtube recommendations. The DM in the video tells a story of a section of a campaign of players having to get into a Lizardfolk lair while also showing off terrain the DM made that is Lizardfolk related. Video here:

Around the 6:45 mark is where it shows a terrain built where Lizardfolk dwell in the campaign, with 14:09 mark showing closeups at a few spots. I could see something similar for a Saurok dwelling, where there is an area for water to swim around in and possibly even fish.

Itā€™s a shame capital cities donā€™t really get made for races unless theyā€™re hubs for an expansion. Iā€™d be curious to see what a Saurok capital city would look like. Maybe something similar to what is shown above and possibly a few themes from Cabilis, the home of the Iksar in Everquest.

Also kinda funny that this encounter had some Ogres meeting with the Lizardfolk there, even if it doesnā€™t end well in the campaignā€™s story. I really need to work on that Ogre/Saurok partnership thing Iā€™ve mentioned in the main post. Still need to plan it out and get ideas for itā€¦ :lizard: :japanese_ogre:

A capital city for Saurok would be amazing and lizardfolk setups in other genreā€™s really show that.

Whether its the DnD type swamp lizardfolk or the Lizardmen of Warhammer with their aztec like temples its got so much potential!

I feel like the only way weā€™d see a capital city for Saurok is if it is a hub for Horde players in a future expansion. Otherwise, Iā€™d likely expect something like a small racial hub like how most allied races have a smallish area for them.

I understand the reasoning for not really making capital cities much, since they take a lot of resources and not a lot of players used them. On the other hand, I miss how they added to making the game feel more like a world (of Warcraft!) instead of just feeling like a game. Kinda similar to Everquest 1 and all the many cities helped to make that world feel alive, for example.

I donā€™t know what the chances are of seeing Saurok get something like the Zandalari capital city, as in being a main expansion hub. A lot can be done for them on a smaller scale, however. Whether they take up residence in a place like Unā€™Goro Crater or Throne of Thunder, or even have a home on a new continent, there is plenty to at least make it feel like their own racial home.

Hopefully, if they become playable, theyā€™ll have a decent sized home to visit and really reflects their culture and such. :lizard:

Got another art piece of an Argonian from the Elder Scrolls games. This one was created by VictoriaDAEDRA and uploaded to DeviantArt on April 14th, 2017.

ā€œNerevarine argonianā€ by VictoriaDAEDRA on DeviantArt

Of note is how the head looks with the frill on the back. I could see something similar for Saurok, including horns as well. Not sure if any Direhorns were used in Saurok creation, but I have seen some Lizardmen races like the Seraphon having such customization. Itā€™s something I think would be very unique for Saurok compared to the Dracthyr.

And of course, there is just the general aesthetics of the art piece for general Saurok inspiration. From scale colors to how armor could look, itā€™s one of the reasons I share art pieces based on Lizardmen from various media. Iā€™ll continue to share more as I come across them! :lizard:

Yeah I get why its just that WoW has lost a lot of its soul in the world building. They need to recover that. Who cares if players donā€™t use it often. Some will.

Would help if every city could provide everything. Blizzard never really made all the cities equal so it was kinda a no duh that people didnā€™t always use all of em.

NPC Dracthyr appear to have voices in the Dracthyr Evoker starting area in the Alpha/Beta. I came across a video showing all cutscenes, most of which have voices.

Obviously, there are spoilers within the video. Itā€™s also from the alpha/beta, so stuff is still a work in progress, including at least one Dracthyr NPC who does not have a voice. Maybe they caught a cold and need a znic lozenge or something. Anyway, video is here:

The voices in general sound mostly fitting for a race of dragon people. Oddly enough, there are times where there isnā€™t any slight growling in the voice, which seems odd as some seem to mix between it and talking with the slight growl. It does seem a bit too human-like in the voice as opposed to being dragon-like, in which being in their visage form with some of the voices applied would be better fitting in my opinion. Still, given Warcraft dragons in general, it works for the most part.

As mentioned before, I feel like something raspy and growling, such as Dinobotā€™s voice from the Beast Wars cartoon, for Saurok would fit them very well. It would be much different than Dracthyr, who seem to have some sort of eloquence in how they speak. Itā€™s a good contrast to help differentiate between dragon people and lizard men, among several other features of both.

Whenever player character Dracthyr voices are available, Iā€™ll be sure to share them here, as well as jokes and flirts which I will note also. In the meantime, Iā€™m still pretty excited for new characters, and the Dracthyr look neat in general. Iā€™m looking forward to making my two Horde Dracthyr in the near future! :dragon:

From MoP when I joined WoW to before the reveal of the Dragonflight expansion, Saurok was a race I wanted to play as. I absolute LOVE reptiles, lizards, dragons, snakes, dinosaurs, you name it if itā€™s got the trait a reptile Iā€™m in with the crew.

Saurok equalled with High Arrakoa in WoD, I wanted for so many years to play as a race that was a reptile or a race that could fly with itā€™s own wings. So when the Dracthyr were revealed as the next playable race, you can guess how much I absolutely freaked.

Saurok have been one of my most wanted playable races since I first saw them. Lizardmen are a favorite of mine in fantasy settings, and Warcraft had really been lacking in reptilian races in general. Theyā€™ve been something I hoped to see get more fleshed out and become playable someday, especially seeing several races in BfA get that treatment.

Dracthyr being playable is a pretty big deal. Dragons are very popular and theyā€™ve been pretty important in Warcraft. However, they donā€™t really satisfy my yearning for a playable Lizardman race. Despite that, Iā€™m still excited to make my Dracthyr and hope that we would still be able to see Saurok and Sethrak become playable someday. After all, if we can have 4.5 elves and 2.5 Dwarves playable, I donā€™t see why we couldnā€™t see more reptilian races.

Iā€™m looking forward to Dragonflight and Dracthyr, and hopefully weā€™ll see more reptilian races in the future! :lizard: :snake: :turtle:

With Dracthyr you could kind of pretend youā€™re a Saurok. Thereā€™s an option to have no horns and kind of look like a snake, and with all the various customizations to the tail, body and head, it could definitely be done.

The only issue is the wings. Which I wish were optional at the cost of being able to use soar butā€¦ yeah.

To be honest, Iā€™m not really a fan of pretending one race is another. Itā€™s like pretending a Pandaren is a Furbolg. Different aesthetics, culture, personalities, and such makes it not really feel right, much like how I feel about how customization races have been treated. Iā€™ve heard of some RPers planning to use Dracthyr to RP as Saurok, in which they have more imagination than I do.

To be clear, Iā€™m not disappointed with Dracthyr becoming playable at all. Theyā€™re pretty awesome, albeit it really limited in various ways, with great customization options. I very much am looking forward to making my Dracthyr characters.

The thing is that they fulfill the dragon fantasy, which is quite different from general Lizardmen fantasy, which is why I mention that Dracthyr donā€™t fit that yearning for a Lizardman race. Itā€™s kinda like with Blood Elves and Night Elves. Sure, theyā€™re both Elves, but they have completely different cultures and aesthetics, which is a good thing since they bring unique gameplay experiences.

I donā€™t see Dracthyr barring Saurok and Sethrak from being playable, and Iā€™m hoping Blizzard will have an open mind in seeing the potential for them as playable races someday. I feel like all three would be unique enough to bring different things to the table with regards of gameplay.

I know I repeat myself a lot on this, but itā€™s something I feel is worth mentioning from time to time. Hopefully, weā€™ll be able to see those races and more become playable in the future someday. :dragon: :lizard: :snake: :turtle:

Arr me hearties! It be International Talk Like a Pirate Day today! :pirate_flag:

As you may recall, weā€™ve seen Saurok pirates in-game as part of the Bilge Rats, a group comprised of mostly NPC races and Vulpera:

It was one of the biggest things of showing Saurok being able of working with other racesā€¦ok, so it isnā€™t the most benevolent of careers here, but still. A lot of the time, they were shown to be near feral-like, so to be part of a pirate crew and working with others towards a goal, even if it is pirating, shows how much Saurok as a race has grown and their capabilities.

I donā€™t really know what happened to the Bilge Rats or the other pirate crews that were in BfA after we beat up their main leader and I assume cleaned up the place. Not that Iā€™d expect much out of them, since they were just a NPC group with an interesting gimmick to it that was likely meant to be a one and done jobber squad.

At any rate, the Bilge Rats are something I often cite when talking about Saurok capable and willing to work with others, among other things in-game Iā€™ve talked about a lot. If Saurok are capable of working in something like a pirate crew towards a goal of some sort, I would think they could be capable of working with others on a grander scale and something more important, like helping to save the world (of Warcraft!).

And if anyone is interested, there is the yearly Pirateā€™s Day event that happens on this day. You can find more info here:

If anyone is doing anything for today, please have a fun, happy, and safe Pirate Day! In the meantime, Iā€™ll try to work on my pirate speech to sound like a menacing pirate!

Fall, my favorite season, has officially started!

And with October being a favorite month of mine and coming up, I thought Iā€™d mention a few upcoming things.

-Sauroktober

This is something Iā€™ve been wanting to make a thing in some fashion, though I donā€™t really know how to go about doing that. Iā€™m open to suggestions, but right now, Iā€™m mostly planning to do more Saurok related postsā€¦so more or less what Iā€™ve been doing I guess.

-National Reptile Awareness Day (October 21st)

A holiday for us reptile fans! Iā€™ll likely be sharing videos celebrating the event as usual here and in the Sethrak megathread. I was thinking when I can have more reliable free time, Iā€™d consider having an in-game event on this day. Something for Saurok, Sethrak, Tortollan, Dracthyr, and reptile fans to do and celebrate in-game. If there is any interest in such an event, please let me know. Iā€™ll have to see how next year will go, as RL has gotten a bit complicated with free time and so on.

-Dragonflight and Dracthyr in general

With Dragonflight still set to release this year to my understanding, weā€™ll likely be seeing a prepatch in the near future in which we can hopefully create our Dracthyr characters.

Iā€™ll continue sharing information on them as we come across it, and when they hit live servers, will share more on that in case things have changed from the alpha/beta. As I mentioned before, I look at Lizard and Dragon related races from various media for Saurok idea inspiration, and with Dracthyr, there is a lot of good that can come out of them that could be applied to Saurok if weā€™re ever lucky enough to see them as a playable race.

-Halloween

One of my favorite holidays. Not sure what Iā€™ll do with it with regards to Saurok and Lizardmen in general, but Iā€™ll see if I can come up with something. :jack_o_lantern:

That is about it from what I can recall. Posts might be a bit slower due to me attempting to be a responsible adult and also some slight health problems, which so far seem to be more annoying than serious. But Iā€™ll continue to keep posting stuff when I can. Gotta keep up the playable Horde Saurok support somehow! :lizard:
