The Unofficial Saurok Playable Race Discussion Megathread! šŸŠ

I always assumed the slaves were being brought in from other places and not the Skumblade but it also could be a color change based on poor health?

I wouldnā€™t put it past the Mogu to neglect their enslaved denizens. After all, they can just rip spirits out, stuff them into some stone, and keep them working. They really take their servants for graniteā€¦err, granted. Of course, freeing these Saurok use to have them enrage and attack Mogu, so it may just be their scale color after all instead of poor health.

I can see the various evil Mogu clans enslaving Saurok from different tribes and moving them where they are needed. Likely the ones that are closer to being feral-like would be easier to do so while those who have evolved a bit more would be harder (and likely more satisfying to the Mogu) to enslave.

Still makes me wish we could help those Saurok and have it lead into Saurok willing to help us to take down the evil Mogu clans. As I said, they tend to just be very neglected with most of the Pandaren and other NPCā€™s being apathetic to their plight. Really big missed opportunity thereā€¦

Come to think of it, Iā€™m really reminded of the Frogloks in Everquest 2 and working to help free them to make them playable. It would be interesting to see something like that with Saurok becoming a playable Horde race, with the Alliance getting their own version and a separate race for them.

Maybe Iā€™ll look into it in a future post. Especially since I did run the ā€œFree the Frogloks!ā€ forums and helped to keep track of how to unlock them and what servers unlocked them, so I am semi-knowledgeable on the subject. Would be fairly easy to do something with freeing Saurok from evil Mogu clansā€¦

Just a fun thought, of course. :lizard:

It would be an awesome concept for the players to fight for the allied race in question and ā€œearnā€ it.

Freeing the Saurok from some evil Mogu clans and bringing them to settle in Orgrimmar and later Unā€™goro or something would be a great way for the Horde to expand.

The way the Froglok event worked, when it got implemented, was that people had to search, find clues, and quest to eventually find out what happened to them. If I recall correctly, there was a solo questline that would unlock them for just you on that server you completed the questline on. The other way was a pretty difficult high tier raid that when a group did it, it unlocked Frogloks for creation for everyone on that particular server, present and future players.

If such a thing happened in WoW, I see it more as unlocking for everyone on all realms at the same time. However, it would be pretty cool to have a mystery that you and the WoW community would need to work together and solve, and then once figured out, would eventually lead towards unlocking a playable race for everyone. It could be both a solo and raid thing people could do.

If Saurok were the subject of such a questline, there would need to be a reason why the Horde and Alliance would be looking into it. Iā€™m not sure what the Alliance would get unless Blizzard made Saurok neutral, but having it be an evil Mogu clan as the cause of it would factor well into the playable Saurok storyline. Obviously, such details would need a lot of fleshing out.

I need to do some research on the whole Froglok unlock questline in Everquest 2. While I did run the Free the Frogloks forums back in the day, I actually didnā€™t have an active sub since I had entered college my first time, so I was mostly piecing together what people have said and clues and mentions of Frogloks anywhere in the game. But I should be able to find more info and maybe some videos of it to help inspire some Saurok ideas.

Once I have a better idea of how it was designed, I might be able to give a sample scenario idea for Saurok. Granted, Iā€™m well behind typing up stuff for other megathreads that I need to get to, but this is still a fun line of thinking. It would also be a good reason for why Saurok would be open to getting help and joining the Horde at the very least. :lizard:

Doing some research on the Froglok unlock event from Everquest 2, I came across this video that showed some segments of the raid you had to do to unlock Frogloks for everyone on the server you were on:

If I understand correctly, a jerk dragon took a pretty important Froglok spirit and sealed them away while also having their minions gather a bunch of Frogloks and chained them, likely to be used for sacrificed. Nothing like being bound within the Temple of Cazic-Thule, the god of fear of all places, eh?

So when it comes to Saurok, I could see something similar. Having a playable tribe who suddenly gets attacked by an evil Mogu clan and gets to be on the losing side. Couple that with this evil Mogu clan causing problems with the Horde, maybe all of this taking place in Unā€™goro Crater as you could easily write reasons for why Saurok would be there and why Mogu would have an interest in the area, would lead to the remaining Saurok tribe to be open to getting help and then realizing that the world (of Warcraft!) is pretty unforgiving and having some allies would be pretty awesome in the survival department.

Sounds like another fun scenario Iā€™ll need to think about, but it would make for a fun and epic event that everyone could participate in. Plus the RP opportunities of whether your Saurok was among those who were fighting or had gotten subdued by the Mogu. Itā€™s really fun to think about. :lizard:

Weā€™ve discussed a lot about devilsaurs being a potential mount for Saurok, whether it is a racial mount or a more prestige mount you could earn from them. To help imagine how it could look like, I came across a video showing a few units from the Seraphon (Warhammer: Age of Sigmar), some of which are riding dinosaur-like mounts:

I think for devilsaur mounts, it would make the most sense if the playable Horde Saurok faction would reside in Unā€™goro Crater. Plenty of them there, along with several other dinosaurs that could also work as racial mounts.

Iā€™m not really sure how big devilsaur mounts would be in reality. They wouldnā€™t be as big as youā€™d typically see them in-game, but Iā€™m sure people would want them to be a decent size and imposing. Iā€™m sure there would be a decent size for them to be as a mount, though.

I still am amused at the idea of the Zandalari being jealous of Saurok being able to tame and ride devilsaurs more easily than them. Would make for a fun rivalry. :lizard:

I feel like they should ride on the smaller ravasaurs, like trolls do. While Devilsaurs are cool and they seem to have an interest in them theyā€™re really large creatures and not, imo, a good fit for the general mount needs.

I kind of like crockalisks.

Diemetradons maybe, if keeping to Unā€™goro being settled?

Saurok on a little side saddle with their Diemetradon mount.

Thinking on it, devilsaurs do seem like something that would be a more prestige mount. Maybe they could come with questing, whether it comes from Saurok or otherwise.

But for racial mounts, Saurok do have a number of possibilities. Moreso if the playable faction ended up residing in Unā€™goro Crater.

A raptor mount would be very fitting, but I donā€™t know how much of an option that would be with Darkspear Trolls using them. Unless the raptor mounts have a Saurok flair to them in some way.

Diemetradons could work, though their fin is a defining feature of them, so I donā€™t know how to work around it as a mount and I assume theyā€™d look weird without that fin.

I had thought about the Pterrordaxes also, though I assume any racial mounts would be ground only. Still, it could be an option for extra mounts to get, much like how Zandalari use Direhorns but also have Pterrodaxes. Maybe a Saurok spin on Pterrodaxes could add into the friendly rivalry.

Assuming Unā€™goro Crater ever got a revamp, maybe weā€™d see more dinosaurs or reptilian beasts take up some real estate there. Or maybe some new reptilian beasts altogether. Itā€™s pretty fun to think about.

I do think for me, I lean a bit more towards mushan and pandarian crocolisks as racial mounts. It shows off ties that Saurok would have to Pandaria, even if the playable faction would be living on another continent. But there are still lots of options, which is always a good thing. :lizard:

Undoubtably theyā€™d have some saddle accoutrements that separate them from the Troll look.

Just having a side saddle look to it. Basically offsetting the character in relation to how the mount drives is all theyā€™d need to do.

This lizard has realized it is a new month is trying to get their ownerā€™s attention so they can get them to submit in-game monthly feedback for playable Horde Saurok and other races we want to see become playable! You too can help spread this lizardā€™s word by doing the same!

With the beginning of each month, I make in-game suggestions for each race I want to see playable along with a mention of their respective megathreads on these forums. While it is far from a guarantee of seeing our dreams come true, I do think every little bit helps, and doing it monthly I feel is reasonable and not that intrusive or annoying.

If youā€™re interested in doing the same for races you want to see playable, I made a little guide on how to do so in-game here:

With luck, weā€™ll be able to see many happy lizards and Saurok someday! :lizard:

MoP Remix continues onward, and I thought Iā€™d talk a bit again about the world boss, Galleon and Salyisā€™ Warband:

Oh yes, I remember the years I spent farming this boss for the Son of Galleon mount to drop. 4,777 attempts it took for meā€¦donā€™t think Iā€™ll be able to ever forget (the things I do for Saurok related stuffā€¦). But Iā€™m happy others can just buy the mount with bronze in MoP Remix and that the drop rate in Retail has been boosted some.

Anyway, the most notable thing about Galleon is that it shows how Saurok can raise animals and even form a bond to an extent with them. We do see this with other tribes, but the mushan seems rather iconic in a way with Saurok because of this world boss. Thus a reason why mushan are usually at the top of the list for being the Saurok racial mount.

Whether Saurok reside on Pandaria or are on another continent, it is a mount that does fit them. If the playable Saurok faction is on another continent, they could always take some with them. Or maybe some mushan were in the Siege of Orgrimmar raid that got loose that some of the captive Skumblade Tribe Saurok took with them, who may have broken off from the Skumblade Tribe. Itā€™s definitely a possibility if Saurok reside in Unā€™goro Crater, but as I said, there are other options for Saurok racial mounts.

As for Galleon specifically, I always thought it would be cool if we revisited Pandaria, the Pandaren managed to make peace with some of the Saurok tribes, and you got to ride on Galleon to stomp and shoot at evil Mogu clans. Seems like it would make for a fun vehicle quest that would bring back some nostalgia.

And interesting to note is that this is a Saurok Warband, which might be one of the earliest instances of warbands in general in WoW. Canā€™t say it is the first, as Iā€™m sure someone could point something out, but given that weā€™re getting Warbands as a feature in TWW, itā€™s fun to point out that Saurok were doing it before it was cool.

Hopefully Iā€™ll be able to add some Horde Saurok characters to my Warband someday! :lizard:

If there is anything Iā€™ve reminded myself on from MoP Remix, itā€™s the potential of the Mogu as a a huge villain and being the blood sworn enemy of Saurok, which would fit very well in a playable Horde Saurok factionā€™s storyline and likely be necessary.

Note that when I say Mogu, Iā€™m referring to the evil and stinky clans that want to subjugate everyone and rule everything, much like any companyā€™s marketing department, as opposed to the Rajani Mogu, who do have some interesting potential if paired with Horde Saurok. Iā€™m curious on their whole views on Saurok and how they were created and if they might be sympathetic to a certain extent.

Getting back to the evil Mogu clans, weā€™ve seen all the dastardly things theyā€™ve done as you quest in the MoP zones. They did kinda take a backseat to Garrosh at some point, but the potential is still there. Theyā€™re also still annoyed at the Saurok and likely want some revenge by subjugating them all again. Combine the arrogance of the evil Mogu clans and their ability to rip souls out and stuff them into things makes them a pretty fearsome opponent that youā€™d want to see be taken down.

This is key to a playable Horde Saurok factionā€™s storyline to me. Having an evil Mogu clan that has gained power and wants to force those Saurok into servitude, while also being a headache to the Horde and possible Alliance, just lays out a nice story path.

One example is with Unā€™goro Crater, where Mogu could have an interest in it because of the titan related items there. Then having the playable Saurok faction there to act as an obstacle towards their plan would cause quite the kerfuffle that would get the Hordeā€™s attention. And of course, having the Mogu win and likely looking to expand their territory on Kalimdor would be rather low on the Hordeā€™s list of fun, happy, and healthy activities. Thus it would be in the Hordeā€™s interest to assist the Saurok here, send the Mogu packing, and then work with the Saurok afterwards. Then youā€™d have pretty awesome allies who could help defend the southern part of Kalimdor and the Saurok would have allies and a place in the world (of Warcraft!) where they could feel like they belong.

Itā€™s just one of many examples you could do with a playable Horde Saurok storyline and having evil Mogu as a pretty big antagonist. It also goes well into Saurok lore, especially given that the Mogu tried to eradicate the Saurok after they decided to go on strike and form their own union. However, the Moguā€™s war on them has not gone very well at all and is very much destined for failure and harming them in the long run, much like Youtubeā€™s war against adblockers.

Iā€™m sure this is all something Iā€™ll continue to harp on in the future, but itā€™s a pretty important potential that needs some regular discussion.

And of course there is still the irony that one of the evil Moguā€™s creations to act as serving them instead helped cause their downfall and became saviors of the world (of Warcraft!) that the evil Mogu wanted to rule over. Always a fun thing to think about! :lizard:

I like this one a lot. Though that might be because I have it hard in my head the Saurok would establish themselves in Unā€™groro to give the Horde ā€œcontrolā€ of the zone. >.>

If we get Saurok in the Unā€™groro, Maximillian of Northshire should be their sitcom nemesis.

I donā€™t know whether he would be excited or scared to see what he would perceive as ā€œdragon peopleā€ suddenly appear as a significant part of the areaā€™s population.

If we go with the Saurok in Unā€™goro Crater idea, it serves many purposes:

-Having titan related stuff in the area gives a pretty good reason to have evil Mogu clans interested in the area. Especially if you could teleport between different areas where titan related stuff is, which weā€™ve done before in various quests. Imagine if Mogu were able to just port into Unā€™goro Crater and start taking over the continent. Not a fun thought, eh?

-Saurok being there makes sense as a deterrent to the Mogu while also having them try to find a place for their tribe to survive. Involve a pretty big war that happens and that would get the Horde invested in the area.

-Remembering how the Horde ended up working with the Hozen and the situation being a pretty dire one, it opens up a partnership between the Horde and the Saurok in Unā€™goro Crater, especially with the Mogu getting to the point of overwhelming the Saurok. Itā€™d also be nice to see people actually wanting to help Saurok as opposed to just letting them get enslaved by the Mogu.

-This also opens up some neat quests and events in the area of sending the evil Mogu clan packing. Mayeb drop kicking the enemy Mogu leader off a cliff into a group of angry Saurok and/or a pack of ravenour devilsaurs would make a great ending to the quest area.

-Obviously there would still be an issue with enemy Mogu clans wanting to claim the titan stuff in the area or even porting in from elsewhere, and the Saurok tribe could use some allies in order to survive, especially if enemy Mogu clans do come back in greater force, and the Horde would get allies and a foothold on the southern part of the continent for defense purposes, so this opens a mutually beneficial partnership. Complete with a lifetime membership to the Horde.

Seems like there is a lot of potential with Horde Saurok residing in Unā€™goro Crater. Itā€™s not the only idea, of course, and the Alliance would need something similar in another area, unless we got Neutral Saurok for some reason, but it all seems to fit really well when thinking more and more on the idea.

Whatever is done with playable Saurok, the best place for them to reside is on the Horde side of that character creation screen! :lizard:
