The Failure of the Evoker and the Difficulty of Making New Classes

Edit: Sorry, I accidentally posted this before finishing it. Misclicked.

An evocative (lol) title no doubt, but a disclaimer: Evoker is a fun class and interesting caster archetype, and I’m happy for all those who enjoy it. Keep carrying on playing Evoker.

However, despite that;

Evoker is the least played class, according to Data For Azeroth. Granted, it has only been out for one expansion. However… that also being said… this was not the case for Death Knight nor Demon Hunter.

If we take into account all classes, Evoker is dead last, with Monk being 2nd to last. Ironically, Death Knight is 4th least played class at the moment, just beating out Rogue at 3rd, but these are most likely due to gameplay purposes, as DKs and Rogues have historically seen high populations of players. Getting back to Monks, Monks were the least played class historically before Evokers were introduced.

If I had to guess at the reasons concerning why Evokers (and Monks to a lesser extent) are played less than Death Knights and Demon Hunters, I’d have to say

  • They do not have a strong, nostalgic connection like DKs and DHs do (origins in WC3, character representation via Arthas & Illidan)

  • Lack of prevalence in the lore and in the world pre-introduction

  • Unique or abstract class concepts

Regardless, in the case of Evokers, I believe a strong piece of evidence to indicate disatsifaction, or, at least the trouble of “fitting in,” is that Drac’thyr will be getting more classes to play as next patch. People are playing Drac’thyr for the race fantasy first, class second. An odd scenario to be sure.

Unless Blizzard adds another class with established lore and relevance, I really doubt we will see another class added again.

Your thoughts? Anything I’m saying ring true, or perhaps I’m missing the mark?

Evoker have the bonus of not being able to wear tmog.

Their general aesthetics is also bit of a mess

And they have one spec that messes up the design space for most other things.

It’s been out for an expansion, it’s only been possible to roll more than one per server for roughly 2 weeks and can only be played by one race (which despite only having a single class still outnumbers Pandaren and like all but one of the short races)

As an Evoker player it’s mostly just that the class isn’t the most fun or flashy. Paladin and shaman are popular because they’re light shows.

lmao, dracthyr are more build than zanda trolls, I really wouldn’t be calling for misshapen fridges.

Also dracthyr were sold as playable dragons, drakonids are significantly less that than dracthyr.

And unlike DK the class was somewhat balanced at launch rather than designed to cater to edgelords on a power trip.

People have been asking for some form of playable dragon since Wrath because Wyrmrest temple was better than the actual A plot lmao.

Despite his tone, I do believe he is right on one thing, that the majority of players if given the choice, would’ve preferred Drakonids to Drac’thyr. I don’t think it really helps with the Drac’thyr intro, as well as the designer for Drac’thyr having a catalogue of their own furry art on Tumblr. Say what you will about that, but I believe the majority’s belief on that topic is not positive, which, really does not do any favors for the Drac’thyr.

jesus christ, get more offended.
I don’t care that you like this abomination that is the current dracthir, but it can be better for you, for me, and actually draw people into this game instead of repelling them away, if my advisories are heard. I’m not here to hurt your fragile feelings, I just want people to want to play this game again.

The drakonid thing is absolute nonsense that originated from Asmon orbiters and redditors and the fact that almost no one plays Kul Tirans should be sufficient proof that the appeal of ogres and drakonids would be even significantly less.

You’re talking about replacing a race that’s around 3.5% of the player base, higher than Pandaren, in the top 10 overall races, with a race whose aesthetics are a scaly version of a race that’s not even half that.

Flightless scaly ogres is not what most people want out of dragons

You sound… Offended?

Dracthyr’s only issue is that they could bulk the model out a little more, especially around the neck/head. And make the casts/talents flashier.

Rogue only has 4% players too. Are they a failed class?

by what exactly. having standards?
Do you have an original thought you are capable of annunciating to the class?

You’re playing a shoe-horned Shadowlands DK. You have no standards.

Googling “WoW playable Drakonid,” we have posts as early as 2018 asking for playable Drakonid, so your claim here is false. Nonetheless, credit where credit is due, I do know what Asmon video you are referencing, and I do agree there is a going to be a portion of people that will agree with every take he has, and regurgitate it mindlessly.

That being said though, nonetheless, evidence for the desire of playable Drakonids is present before his video.

Uhhhh… No, totally no issues here. There are no bugs in Ba Sing Se.

Do you think the Dracthyr are woke?

Noone wants inverted trapezoid drakonids

People have been asking for some form of playable dragon since at least wrath so long before 2018.

Also people ask for races that barely anyone else would be interested in playing constantly. Hozen are regularly asked for.
