Survival Hunter

The issue with Survival Tree is that our Capstone talent is useless in combat, and traps don’t truly scale, so investing in them for anything other than using the Lock and Load Rune feels not meaningful.

A rune that allows for Wyvern Sting to be used in combat against bosses that are immune to sleep, a shorter, usable cooldown and to give it a good interaction with Chimera Shot or Lock and Load would help the spec a lot.

Making TnT Rune give our traps actual scaling instead of just a flat damage boost would also be good. That rune feels very lackluster when Focus Fire exists.

Survival to me in the Classic mindset feels like the spec that would most want to weave in and out of melee range to use Raptor Strike for really big hits. Adding a big incentive to Raptor Strike often would be very cool, but would possibly be broken with some of the melee runes now.

I would very much like a spec that has some good damage over time elements like trap damage and Wyvern Sting damage from ranged, so that when we weave into melee for Raptor Strike, our damage doesn’t suffer as much in those seconds of movement. Maybe have Raptor Strike crits proc a buff that makes the next damaging Trap used deal increased damage, which then makes Lock n Load proc, so we can hit with a Chimera Shot that has some special interaction with Wyvern Sting? Such as Spreading Wyvern Sting to nearby Targets?

Depends if threat is a concern or not. If it is you can even go lone wolf as SV to improve it further.
But if you go BM with a 2 handed weapon your own dps is going to be pitiful which translates into much lower threat.

I doubt 4% crit, 3% hit and around 50 or so Agi will make that big of a difference in personal threat.

SV’s tree isn’t exactly great.

And eventually 30% from lone wolf.

Or you know, if they make Lone Wolf the tank stance, BM and MM are suddenly useless and there is no reason to not go deep survival. :person_shrugging:

Eh I don’t like that happening to LW - there should be a rune for running no pet, and that’s something both MM and SV both are inclined to do.

Step 1

Rune of lion changed to a book off of chest (only gives kings no additional 10% for the hunter)

New chest rune -rune of the gorrila

Aspect of the gorilla
Aspect of the monkey is replaced with aspect of the gorilla, giving all of monkeys effects and the hunter gains additional threat but deals 20% less damage

Rune of the mongoose (new foot rune)
Mongoose bite and counter attack now also reduces the hunters damage taken by the next attack they receive by 100% of their agility (encourages lightning reflexes) and gain bonus threat generated based on total agility

Rune of distractions (belt rune)

Feign death becomes alpha’s roar causing a large amount of aoe threat and has a 10 second CD, which is reduced by 2 seconds when dodging or parrying an attack, talents that reduce the resist chance of feign death also reduce the resist chance of alpha’s roar by 300% the origional value (improved feign death is 4% at 2/2, so it would be 12% reduced resist chance for alpha’s roar)
Distracting shot is now a taunt and how no minimum range

Just a few ideas

The problem with that is the pet (with bm rune) can actually act as a defensive CD for the hunter (have turtle pet, this also reduces the hunters damage), tieing the tanking to lone wolf removes that option.

No. We don’t need Tank hunters.

just make Lone Wolf/SV viable and it would be sweet.

Plsgod no hunter tanks

care to elaborate?

Tbh i think hunter should get some type of self heal rune, or some snake trap rune. Maybe a freedom ability. Idk. Something to increase its survivability in PvP, or maybe somethting for raid utility, something thats active and engaging. I really loved playing hunter in BWL, kiting all of the mobs and packs to help out the raid. Would live to see something like this being required in future raids. Im a hunter and i want to KITE!

I play nelf hunter and atleast i can do some shadowmeld shenanigans in PvP and also stealth eat. Cant imagine being any other race that just gets giga boned by DoTs in PvP. I am loving hunter in PvP though. Trap launcher + lock and load is dope.

Because it doesn’t make any sense, we don’t need every class in the game filling two roles. It was enough they made melee viable. Also, it doesn’t fit at all lore wise.

rexxar and misha could tank a dungeon. go ahead and doubt em.

and considering how goated survivals talents are for tanking, with a little bit a rune support… melee could very easily tank.

I put this up in the other thread calling for “no tanking”

  • 5/5 Deflection for 5% parry

  • 5/5 Survivalist for 10% health increase

  • Deterrence for + 25% parry/dodge on cooldown

  • 5/5 Lightning Reflexes for 15% agility

  • 5/5 Imp Wing clip to stop runners

  • 5/5 Entrapment for traps to lock them down (with Trap Launcher this was already huge in SM Phase 2)

  • Combine all that with Catlike Reflexes (20% dodge), Heart of the Lion (10% stats)/Lone Wolf (30% Dmg), Melee Specialist, Flanking Strike, Raptor Fury, Carve and switch between Trap Launcher and Dual Wield Specialisation (Which basically turns Raptor Strike into Mutilate)

Add Improved Aspect of the Monkey and your Avoidance will be well over 50% without Deterrance.

The only thing Missing is a Rune or Talent like Just a Flesh Wound to reduce your Crit chance by 6% and some way to taunt and you have yourself a tank.

They should have embraced Hunter Tank and given rogues a ranged utility spec.

Thank god you aren’t a game dev.

delete this right now

this is such a basic and lame idea that it actually makes sense hunters are the ones that like it

Pets are janky and unreliable. If you want to tank as a hunter you should just accept that pets shouldn’t be involved.

In a long term sence of tanking, this is true.

But for a quick damage soak taunt, they are very useful.

You can recall pet to you, then taunt with it to prevent pet from turning the boss. Activate shell shield and its taking very little damage.

Sure it only works for the duration of the taunt but it can eat 2-3 big hits to buy time for healers to catch up. And if it is getting healed passively from cleave heals, the pet will be full hp for another taunt soon enough.

Not saying its great design, but it is there.
