Same issue…don’t know how to solve.
This issue and fix (for some) seems to be a bit different for everyone.
One one Mac Studio, Sonoma 14.0 I was able to do only this to resolve
But on a separate Mac Studio Sonoma, I also had to do this as well
Deleting the .dat file fixed it for me on iMac 27inch running Monterey.
This suggestion at least let my client begin the download. Also added bnet and the agent to full disk access under privacy and security. Macbook 13, M1 running Ventura
Update stuck on MacBookPro17,1 Ventura 13.6.1 I managed to fix the issue. Here’s my workaround. You need working WoW client on PC.
- On PC, go to Data\indices. Remove all files within.
- Start repair. If you have multiple versions of WoW, repair all of them.
- Copy ‘indices’ folder and paste on Mac’s WoW directory.
- Start the update.
It is important that RW permissions are granted for all users. Check the properties of ‘World of Warcraft’ folder. Check that ‘everyone’ has read & write.
EDIT : If above solution doesn’t work, try fresh install.
- Prepare working WoW client on PC and copy the folder to external drive. (The folder that contains Data, _retail, classic …)
- On Mac, select installation location. Once the dialog box is dismissed, pause the installation immediately. Close the bnet app.
- Paste the WoW folder on the installation directory correctly.
- Start repair. It is important that you repair the latest expansions first. For example if you have retail and classic era, repair the retail first. If you have classic and classic era repair classic.
EDIT : Additional tips for Mac users
- Reset ‘Privacy & Security’ settings : Open ‘Terminal’. Type ‘tccutil reset All’.
- Remove bent app and reinstall : Do not use the Trash. Use ‘AppCleaner’ to delete all bnet files.
- Play the game on a single user : If your Mac have multiple users and you play bnet game on several users this may cause problem. Install and update the game on a single designated user.
- If ‘Agent would like to change…’ dialog box pops up, close it immediately. Do not enter your passcode.
- Try disk repair : Open ‘Disk Utilities’. Repair your disk.
I just found something quite interesting.
After two days of deleting:
/Users/Shared/Battle.net
/Users/Shared/Blizzard
/Library/Application Support/ (everything wow, battle.net or blizzard)
/Library/Preferences/ (everything wow, battle.net or blizzard)
~/Library/Application Support/ (everything wow, battle.net or blizzard)
~/Library/Preferences/ (everything wow, battle.net or blizzard)
/Applications/Battle.net
/Applications/World of Warcraft
I finally opened the Console app, i filtered by Process: Agent, Path: Battle, excluded text with “wifi” and went through the list while initializing an install and saw:
skipping upgrade for locked keychain /Users/[username]/Library/Keychains/Microsoft_Intermediate_Certificates
A quick google and this is a keychain added by Outlook (if you have it, its password is blank) thats used for sending/receiving encrypted emails
I opened keychain, right clicked and removed it (just from the keychain not from disk) and instantly the installer switched from initializing to installing and started downloading the 90+GB of WoW
Not sure with Agent is looking at the KeyChain at all, but if it needs to, it should be only looking at Login/Cloud chains (nothing else)…
So helpful! Fixed my problem after hours of attempts. Thanks!
I just had this happen to me. Was stuck on initializing forever. This fixed it right away thank you very much!
Just be honest Blizz, you don’t want to support Mac clients anymore.
If you have access to a PC install, copy the indices folder from the updated PC to the World of Warcraft/Data folder and then change the permissions on the folder to read/write for everyone and then also apply it to enclosed folders and you’re good to go.
can also just type:
sudo chmod -R u+rwX,g+rwX,o+rwX /Applications/“World of Warcraft”/*
If your default install is in /Application… otherwise change the path to your folder.
Of all the solutions posted this was the one that did it. Thanks!!! ![]()
Looks like this will only work on M series of macbooks. I’m on an M1 Pro and this is what has worked for me. Never needed to add the apps to any security settings because you are just unlocking the world of warcraft directory for everyone. There’s another issue w/ intel macs which is a graphical error (on apple’s end not blizzard) on sonoma so the option there seems to be downgrade.
