It will work in a network with other players and share information, so it can have an exponentially bigger range. also if other add ons are used in conjunction with this one it gets really bad.
Right.
Spy does not do that. The functions it provides already exist by default. Read your combat log.
There is a very big problem with the whole “read your combat log” argument.
The people who read their combat logs while in combat or in a PvP situation end up dead or just entirely useless.
I use the mentioned add-on because I enjoy it’s features, but the more I use it the more I realize now its almost required for world PvP because of you don’t use it then you’re crippling your self.
That is actually fully against the spirit of Classic.
The only real arguments I can see about MANY of these addons is that they save a massive amount of time on things. Which in pvp it saves you so much time and effort and keeps the ability to target everyone easily available.
Easy re-targets, easy information set aside for you to use and prepare…all stuff that gives you a huge edge to those who don’t have the addon as doing it with the vanilla UI takes a great deal more time to do. Massively cutting down the time for these things make you much more responsive in PvP and that’s where some of the problem comes from.
If you’re already fighting in PvP, knowing a rogue stealthed nearby isn’t really your priority, anyway.
Spy doesn’t change that.
All add-ons give some sort of advantage in that regard, one way or another. That’s the point of them.
Having an advantage in response time isn’t the criteria by which Blizzard determines an add-on isn’t allowed, though.
I see you’re not aware of its other features.
Its other features are listed here in this thread. e.e
I know. But I’m trying to show you a legitimate gripe for people to have with addons. It IS a legitimate reason regardless of Blizzard allowing it lol.
I don’t think it’s legitimate.
It’s like going to play sports barefoot and complaining that people are wearing shoes.
Wrong. This is like steroids in sports and steroids being allowed.
The point I’m trying to make is that other players have a clear advantage that the person complaining is purposely choosing to reject.
This is more true of those who want to ban ALL add-ons and not just this one in particular.
Blizzard broke the group finder add-on OQ and others like it (for Classic) because it was opposed to the spirit of Classic WoW.
That is the standard they’re also using.
Cool, but Spy existed in vanilla and is part of the “spirit of Classic WoW,” whatever that means.
I still can’t stand the conga line of people saying this. STOP REMEMBERING THINGS THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN IN VANILLA WOW.
You can talk about how the Addon is fair game to use, but stop telling people that this addon existed in vanilla.
Spy was Created May 26, 2009
Burning Crusade released 2007.
Yes, please do, Mr. “Pre-raid BiS isn’t a term that was used in vanilla.”
I suppose it would be more accurate to say an add-on that did exactly what this add-on does existed in vanilla, if that makes you feel better.
Spy Classic, which is the actual add-on being discussed here, not just “Spy,” was created in 2019, not 2009.
By the way, here it is:
https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/project-775
“Created: May 27, 2005”
“VISUAL: CombatSentryGizmo keeps a visual, clickable list of current and potential attackers, buffers and healers.”
“DETECTION: CombatSentryGizmo also displays current enemy players that it ‘detects’ even if they haven’t attacked you (meaning: the enemy performs an action that shows up in your combat log), if you have that option turned on.”
Spy goes against the spirit of fairplay, as does Healers Have To Die (which allows an entire raid to know who the enemy healers are and focus fire them right off the bat.)
These both go against the spirit of “Play Nice, Play Fair.”
And going against that core Vanilla value is a change. #NoChanges
If a person is forced to “install and use” an add on to be competitive it should be broken. It should be only used if its a utility or for aesthetics.
Exactly, Healers have to die is terrible. I loved playing healer in Battlegrounds but when everyone just focused on you from the start and burn you down, theres not much you can do. I think it made people not want to roll heals, or at least heal in pvp.
Why do you keep claiming he said he wanted the entire addon banned? We’ve surpassed this several times, and stated only stealth would need to be removed from combat log. Any form of stealth, such as shadowmeld, vanish, stealth or prowl. No one’s claiming they want the ENTIRE addon banned atm.
(Responded to wrong person originally.)
I found out today in winterspring that a mouseover of an afk enemy will also add it to the list. A player completly afk just because i moused over them - no movement, no combat log entry, no buffs - i didnt even target them.
I have found use for this so far that it allows you to have some idea of enemies in an area you might want to farm (Sth Winterspring for Rich Thorium Veins).
I downloaded this addon purely because of the easy to use kill on sight list and the popup it shows when it goes off. Very helpful.
A slight variation to this could be also made that will watch combat logs for mining/herb nodes being used for same faction, so you could see who is farming what within 200 yards of you.
Interesting stuff.
