In all honesty it’s for reasons that are against the general cliche of Star Wars in general.
Let me begin by saying I’m already not the biggest Star Wars fan. Personally I find the franchise already flawed and questionable in many aspects. A good example would be the fact that this franchise has a very juvenile perspective on morality and good/wrong. The Dark side is full of cartoon villains who are pure evil while the Force is full of obvious good fellas.
The Last Jedi was the first Star Wars movie to actually break that mold and introduce a grey philosophy. It was bloody fantastic, it questioned the Jedi and also gave ear to the Sith unlike previous films have.
The Last Jedi also flipped the Force Awakens on it’s head and for that I love it. I hated the Force Awakens because it was simply another Star Wars movie full of every basic Star Wars point as if extracted from a shopping list.
-Another edgy villain who wears a mask with a raspy voice? Check
-Another older pure evil villain who rules over him? Check
-Another Mary Sue who is destined to bring balance to the force? Check
-Another Giant Mega weapon made to destroy Planets with a simple weakness? Check
You get the idea.
The Last Jedi throws tons of that out the window and almost every part that makes fans upset I personally enjoyed. What? Luke Skywalker can’t be older and disgruntled because he doesn’t fit the criteria of a younger, less developed Luke from 30 freaking years ago?
The list goes on. I respect those who dislike this movie because they wanted their Star Wars film to feel more Star Wars but no one can deny this film was gorgeous and filmed well. It has one of the best Lightsaber fights in the franchise inside the Red Throne Room. It has one of the best visual scenes I’ve ever seen in any movie in regards to a ship collision.
And best of all? It completely develops Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren into one of the coolest, most relatable villains who I can sympathize and cheer for in years. It actually gives us a villain who isn’t some pure 100% cartoon evil villain who would kill puppies. It gives us someone who actually feels real.
In short: It tried to do something new.
Again, this is how I see things. This is my opinion for the matter. Is the Last Jedi perfect? Hell noooo, it has one of the most wasted sub plots I’ve seen in recent memory. Almost everything regarding Finn and Rose’s story feels out of place and annoying, and this is unfortunately a big part of the movie. It has several moments that are questionable, but no where near the vile and hate it received from the fandom.
Fans hated a older, more angry Luke Skywalker. I freaking loved him, and his scene in the end was in my opinion one of the coolest moments for anyone in this entire franchise.
As for all you haters, I shared my piece. Every time I even mention that I like this movie I have people come at me ridiculing me for being “a moron” or “out of touch”. I’m not going to argue. If you dislike this movie good for you. I still find it an outstanding film and one of the best in the franchise. Deal with it.
There is your answer Xelnia, sorry it’s long and winded.
He impulsively turned it on, that’s it. Just a quick moment of fear, but he didn’t act on it. Similar to how he nearly killed his own father through impulsive behavior, but he didn’t fully commit.
If we want to talk about characters completely accelerating into unbelievable outcomes then let’s discuss Anakin killing children merely days after being their role model.
Ironically most the people I have spoken to who hates The Last Jedi absolutely loves Revenge of the Sith, despite it having worse character development.
Same flaw and people were complaining about that too… Of course the flaw being done towards a more beloved character(Luke was loved way more than Anakin was) despite being more realistic(considering Luke almost killed Vader out of fear for Leia) caused massive damage to the franchise it seems…
JJ Abrams of course showed that if he directed all 3 Films he’d have made the Trilogy even more incoherent than it already was due to his obsessive habit of correcting what Fans complain about whenever he makes a Movie even if it’s to the film’s derision as shown with Rise of Skywalker.
It’s weird because I enjoyed TLJ even though I despised TFA, but I don’t really agree with your viewpoints on what happened for each or why they were good/bad for the story/movie. Weird. shrug
Also, RotS is my favorite SW movie alongside RotJ. And I don’t think the character development for Anakin to Vader was misplaced. I also consider myself to be a huge SW fan.
See, I agree with this. And I think the real travesty with Luke came with TFA where he ran off to hide and cry because his nephew turned to the Dark Side. If any movie did a disservice to Luke’s character, it was TFA. TLJ was handed the mess and had to make it believable. Thankfully, Mark Hamill did a fantastic job in that movie, so it worked out.
And I 100% agree that Luke had a reflex to want to rid a powerful source of the Dark Side. I mean, it’s pretty natural to want to defend against something bad. But he realized his reaction almost immediately after the lightsaber was activated, and was ashamed of what he was about to do. At least it makes his self-imposed exile seem reasonable as opposed to stupid and weak (and completely out of character for someone who always faced the hard things head on).
Yeah, if anything ruined Luke, it was TFA, and no one can change my mind on that. TLJ tried to fix the mess that TFA created, and it didn’t do a bad job of doing so, in my opinion. Mark Hamill completely carried the movie though (like Han did for TFA).
million/billion dollar companies making million/billion more because of their stories and a hand full of video game players who subscribe to wow and think they someone think they know more than the million/billion dollar companies do.
I get the feeling that they knew they had bitten off more than they could chew with giving that story finality and simply wanted to get it over with and move on to being hated for their conclusion, because they would be hated no matter what they did. Star Wars fan are the worst.
Well the sequel trilogy is pretty much a middle finger to just about any StarWars fan tbf
Im not even a hardcore fan of SW and i hated this trilogy
Mary Sue chronicles
Finn Aka wasted potential (Btw actor just doesnt give a one anymore and is just making fun of the plot lol)
An horrible old man pretends to be Luke. (He just didnt gave a one from the beginning and pretty much told people to dont even bother watching the movies or at least paying for them)
Leia survives being in space. (This is one of the stupidest scenes of the trilogy)
Your mom jokes
All characters die but turns out they dont (theres 4 fake deaths in RoS…)
Palpatine revives off-screen and his plan just doesnt make any sense
The casino part
Rose Tico is an horrible character (Sorry for the actress that had to deal with all that bs from the fans, if only her character was better written)
Yes and all that data shows it is overall a well-received movie? I’m not saying it’s the best movie by any means, but it sure as hell was not a poorly received movie lol
The only people who genuinely dislike it are vastly in the minority. I’d love to see any “data” pointing to the opposite.
That’s part of my point. I’m not arguing everyone loves these movies, but that they are mostly well-received. I was originally responding to someone who said it was overwhelmingly poorly-received due to too much feminism (which is obviously hilariously wrong).
Origin stories are hardly ever the most popular movies in a series (especially when they are released during a climactic period in the series).
