Life on Azeroth can be unpredictable, as you never know where you are likely to go next. Will you venture forth to explore a new land? Perhaps you wish to return to a familiar town to meet up with old friends, or venture into the wilds to hunt down materials to craft or sell!

No matter what you do, you will almost certainly need to travel to get there. For most travel we have a myriad of conveyances, from your own loyal, and often vast, collection of mounts, to our trusty network of gryphons, wyverns, and other beasts to take you from point to point.

For instantaneous travel you usually need to be, or use the services of, a powerful Mage who knows the desired teleportation spell, or have access to the various portals that traditionally are spread throughout the lands. That is…. until recently.

Patch 8.1.5 introduces the Portal Room! Located in the Alliance and Horde capitals of Stormwind and Orgrimmar, these rooms contain multiple portals that will take you to distant locations around Azeroth. What this means is that specific expansion-based portals are now centrally located and traveling back through a portal should place you in the Portal Room.

Alliance Portal Room

The Alliance Portal Room in Stormwind is located in the Mage Quarter, inside the Wizard’s Santum. Upon entering you’ll go up the ramp and through the portal arch to reach the main area.

Available Portals:

  • Exodar - The Vault of Lights

  • Shattrath - Terrace of Light
    – Portal to Isle of Quel’Danas

  • Dalaran, Crystalsong Forest - The Violet Gate

  • Pandaria, Paw’don Village

  • Ashran, Stormshield
    – Portal to Tanaan Jungle, Lion’s Watch

  • Azsuna, Crumbled Palace

  • Boralus - Sanctum of Sages

    • Silithus - Magni’s Encampment
    • Ironforge
    • Exodar
    • Stormwind

Note: At the entrance to the tower there is an Honor Hold Mage and Vanguard Battlemage that may take you to the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands, if eligible.

The Horde Portal Room in Orgrimmar is located inside the Gates of Orgrimmar between Durotar and the Valley of Strength.

Available Portals:

  • Silvermoon – Sunfury Spire
  • Shattrath – Terrace of Light
    – Portal to Isle of Quel’Danas
  • Dalaran, Crystalsong Forest – The Violet Gate
  • Pandaria, Honeydew Village
  • Ashran, Warspear
    – Tanaan Jungle, Vol’mar
  • Azsuna, Crumbled Palace
  • Zuldazar – Hall of Ancient Paths
    • Silithus – Magni’s Encampment
    • Thunder Bluff
    • Orgrimmar
    • Silvermoon City

Note: Near the Shattrath portal is a Thrallmar Mage that will take you to the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands, if eligible.

There are various portals still scattered around the world that will only be available conditionally.

Cataclysm :

Additional portals to Cataclysm specific areas are available in the Western Earthshrine for the Horde and the Eastern Earthshrine for the Alliance. The portals that are available, if unlocked, are to:

  • Twilight Highlands
  • Hyjal
  • Deepholm
  • Vashj’ir
  • Uldum
  • Tol Barad

Legion :

Portals to various parts of Azeroth can be found in the Chamber of the Guardian if you are currently on the relevant quest for it (usually associated with your Artifact Weapon questline).

Dalaran:

  • Chamber of the Guardian (visible if you are on the relevant quest)
    • Caverns of Time, Tanaris
    • Dalaran Crater, Alterac Mountains
    • Karazhan, Deadwind Pass
    • Shattrath City, Terokkar Forest
    • Wyrmrest Temple, Dragonblight

Misc:

During big events in the world of Azeroth some areas may undergo a great change that will alter the landscape (i.e. Undercity-Tirisfal Glades / Darnassus/Darkshore). In those areas you may encounter Zidormi, a member of the Keepers of Time who will transport you to the area before the event. Some portals may only be available in those past versions, or change the teleportation arrival point, based on the timeline.
