Some form of Sharding

ziryus even admits that it creates more resources. that’s all that matters. he can claim net zero all he wants, but hes admitted that it creates extra resources. and that alone is proof that sharding should not be in teh game beyond launch.

It’s a common fallacy of modern economic understanding to conflate capital with currency. It’s a lot easier to understand in WoW’s economy than it is in the real world, but it still is a tough thing to wrap your mind around if you have bought into the modern notion that “resouces” sold for “gold” are equal in value to the gold they are sold for and lose track of the notion that the gold is a convenience of trading rather than a store of actual value.

Inflation kills gold’s functionality as a temporary store of value, at least in game. In the real world, gold has some worth independently of its currency valuation that sets a floor for its price. You can make jewelry and good conductors out of it, for example. In game you can’t even melt down your currency gold and use it like you can the “real” gold you can mine in lower level areas.

Thanks for your thoughtful contribution to this thread you started, Whiskee.

this is such a great contribution to the discussion being had.

It’s better than me calling it bunk. I would get blamed for trolling then.

and laughing without contribution isn’t contribution?
the fact is that sharding adds additional resources to the server. this is true whether you like it or not.

No it didn’t without people to gather said resources it most certainly did not generate as much as a healthy realm.

You could roll out your best economics theory and refute my bunk, if you are so inclined.

Or, if you don’t know anything about economics and want to fake it, you can just “lol” it and see if anyone else will set me straight, I guess.

yes, people had to gather it. but it would still only generate a finite amount of resources a day. if i went out and gathered all the resources on a high pop and a low pop server, they would be teh same regardless of server population.

just because we had more people did not mean we automatically got more of certain resources.

this was especially true when you looked at stuff like Lotus.

I know a bit about economics, especially as it relates to law (patent law specifically.) However, I refuse to spout out economic theories and especially when it reads like some ridiculous grad student pondering. Inflation doesn’t “kill” gold’s “functionality as a temporary store of value.” You don’t even understand what you said there.

You believe what you want to believe about me, I guess.

I guess you got what you came for. 473 comments already on this thread and you didn’t really need to stoke the fires all that much. Comment count is the currency of the forum troll, amiright?

It depends on the “functionality as a temporary store of value.” lol

Did I hurt your brain with big words, like a pretentious grad student might?

Speaking of patent law, how many patents do you have with your name on them? I have six. I’ve actually built and sold the technology in a profitable manner on five of those six. I’m not a grad student, by a long shot. I’m just a reasonably successful engineer with 25 years of experience under my belt, after college (and no, I didn’t even go to grad school).

Should I dumb down my words for you, so you can keep up? Should I talk about real-folk things and limit my words to feel-good crap to make the everyman populist more comfortable with their lot in life?

Whatev’s troll. You probably don’t even like a good whisky, in spite of your name.

Odinmar, you’re letting a troll pull you across the line so he can flag your posts. Don’t fall for it. I like your posts, and don’t wanna see you get banned. :yum:

Yeah that part about whisky was a low blow. I apologize, Whiskee, for that one. You didn’t deserve it.

Thanks for looking out for me, Mogar. I’ll keep it straight and narrow. I just bristle at anti-intellectual crap like that. I’m defensive precisely because I never got a graduate degree and in my business I’m one of a very few who did well without such an educational pedigree.

And now my game immersion is fully broken!

Ok, you are on full tilt when you present your resume in a video game forum. Stop trolling in my thread.

Yup, you are an effective troll. You’ve baited me quite effectively.

Bravo, my friend.

Look, you seem like a nice enough of a fellow and I accept your appology, thank you. Kudos to you for being a named inventor on several patents, that’s some seriously good stuff. I have zero patents, but I’ve prosecuted many many patents in biopharmaceuticals so I get that you are kind of a big deal sans grad degree.

I’m just trying to have a good discussion about sharding here, that is all.

Okay, well if you can make it past my pretentious choice of wording, please feel free to contribute to the discussion on the nature of a WoW server gold economy and what sharding does or does not do to inflation.

Thank you for accepting my apology. I take pride in my ability to write and communicate, so if it please you (or if it doesn’t, actually) I’ll continue to use my style of writing. Feel free to engage productively, or alternately just “lol” me dismissively – such as flatters your preferences…
