So Overwolf is just going to be allowed to hold a monopoly over addons?

I still use curse and manually add them.

I’ll take that over spyware

Eh, no monopoly, there’s always the option of, ya know, reinstalling them yourself when they break. I’ve done that for awhile now because I didn’t even like the original curse. Green man up the thread says there’s now a more streamlined package too so I guess it may be a moot point now.

I started using the standalone Curse app and it seems to be doing fine so far.

Addon authors should just upload their work to GitHub and wowup should download directly from there.

Overwolf is a middle man.

HOW DARE ANYBODY MAKE MONEY ANYWHERE ANYWAY!

I use Minion. Anyone have an informed opinion regarding Minion?

Blizzard just needs to bite the bullet and host the Addons themselves since they aren’t willing to break them. Even the greediest of Addon developers (looking at you MDT) wouldn’t be able to strongarm the community like they have been. Yeah, Overwolf is a joke, but the real issue is hobbyists making derivative works believing they’re entitled to compensation for the coding equivalent of fanfics.

Yeah, I’m sorry but no, Addon developers don’t deserve compensation. If people wish to donate to them for their HOBBY, that’s fine, but the expectation of being paid FOR YOUR HOBBY is peak entitlement.

No, expecting others to do something for nothing and throwing tanrums when they dont is peak entitlement lol.

Make your own addons.

^This.

Overwolf is just a convenience and we pay for convenience everywhere. It’s no different than food delivery apps which wind up costing you more for the food you could have gone out and picked up yourself.

And self reinstall isn’t even that hard. Just go to curseforge, download the ones you want, then unzip if need be and place them in the appropriate folder. Easy-peasy.

Yeah…let’s ask the Creation Club creators how well that line of thinking worked out.

Sorry bro, but it’s a hobby, not a job. You want to be paid for coding, line up in the oversaturated developer market like everyone else. You don’t deserve payment for piggybacking off of the works of others.

Irony, because again, you are mad because you feel entitled to their work.

Just code your own addons.

Then pay for your own hosting.

Then do your own updates.

Then create your own convenient updating software.

Problem solved, then nobody has to hear the crying anymore.

If you dont want to do that, then accept that somebody else is going to and they may monetize it. You dont have to like it, nobody cares if you dont. Unless its your addon, your host, or your software your opinion is irrelevant.

Real talk, this is something that Blizzard needs to seriously put their foot down on because the TOS clearly states that it’s against the rules.

Refusing to host addons anywhere that isn’t providing ad revenue definitely falls under the “otherwise require some form of monetary compensation to download or access an add-on.”

Ive never had problems with it either.

Not once have i opened it and even seen an ad, mostly just the message thanking me or whatever.

You realize that the ToS is terms to… play the game…

“Overwolf” the company is not trying to play the game.

Theres not a whole lot blizzard could do, their only real action they could take is similar to how they take down cheats/bots, which isnt the tos, its copyright infringement for unauthorized use of assets (screenshots). The probpem is then they need to take down kotaku, wowhead, mmochamp, tradeskillmaster, etc etc etc.

It costs money to host. It costs money to maintain. The idea that this stuff is just free for everybody and somebody else just needs to eat the cost is entitlement of the highest order.

But the actual reality is, the blame is on blizzards end… most of these addons only exist because blizzard is lazy and pawned it all off on the community rather than create similar tools themselves. The incurred costs of shutting down places like curseforge vastly outweigh any benefit.

The good news is, though, that like i said. Theres no licensed agreement. ANYBODY is free to start their own addons, and their own hosting, and their own maintence. At any time. If you dont like a service and think you can do better, feel free to start your own.

just bookmark the addon page and download it yourself.

You just need to update once in a while manually it doesnt take long.

or create an html file with the url to each addon then open each link in a new tab

have your wow interface in your windows favorite and just copy all the downloaded files there then “unzip here”.

doesnt take me more than a couple seconds to get an addon.
