So Overwolf is just going to be allowed to hold a monopoly over addons?

I dont mind overwolf or curse. What i hated is when we had to have a twitch account to download addons. I dont use twitch or ever go on there. Im glad that part is gone!

You can block the overwolf/curseforge ad servers in your hosts file and run the standalone wow addon updater from them with 0 ads.

That’s NEVER going to happen. They aren’t going to spend money on something that’s already being done for free plus they don’t want the headache of dealing with it.

Overwolf should be shut down. Horrid abuse of something that was handled somewhat responsibly until now.

Easy to work around, but a workaround we shouldn’t have to resort to.

Back in my day, we installed and updated our addons manually.

They aren’t abusing anything. They own and pay to maintain the repository and servers. They have just as much right to set rules for accessing their API as Blizzard does theirs.

I truly have no issues with it. It’s always worked well for me

Is it really that hard for people download the add on, drag it to your wow addon folder then click the little “Do you want to replace duplicate files” button if needed?

Depends on how many addons you have. I normally use 60 to 70 so I’ll pass on updating manually. Also if you’re getting addons from the CurseForge website you’re still supporting Overwolf.

I’ve never had any problems either.

Newsflash: Running a web site and hosting public downloads costs money. Even if Curse wasn’t kicking some of its proceeds back to the developers, they couldn’t operate without a sub fee or ads.

While Wowup was a nice program, on the backend it was a leech. It operated on the financial backing of the Curse folks, offering nothing in return. This is why they are forced to show the Wago ad if you connect Wowup to wago. The Wago folks aren’t going to allow Wowup to be a leech either.

The Wowup folks have the option, like any entrepreneur, to financially back their own infrastructure for addon devs to place their apps. If they did, you would be guaranteed to see ads or a sub with Wowup as well.

One of the best things Microsoft can do for the game and addons in general when they take over is require everything be hosted on a freely accessible site. Like say, GitHub, which Microsoft owns. Would end this problem in a minute. That way players can install manually or use whatever addon manager they choose whether it be WoWup or Curse.

They already are.

Same here. Just updated three addons in seconds.

Technically, you have it backwards because something like Overwolf is the ‘workaround’. Addons used to be required to be installed manually and still can be without some sort of ‘manager’ for them.

Bloatware, shady practices in their past, history of saying on thing then going back on what they say.

When the Overwolf curse buyout happened there was a pretty big thread that outlined a lot of Overwolfs shady actions in the past.

I always find it funny that this is the only defense people can make for the company XD

“Buh da addon authors get monies” sure, addon authors 100% deserve to be able to be compensated for their hard work or they choose so. Addon’s don’t just poof into existence from thin air. However that doesn’t give overwolf’s past a free pass and it doesn’t change the fact that the original client was absolutely bloatware.

I of course say this is someone who is currently using the new curse client, which I pretty clearly promoted in my first post on this thread.

My argument isn’t against, nor has it ever been against, compensation for add-on creators. My argument is always been against overwolf being garbage with a garbage past.

You can block all adds on curseforge by blocking googles ad services in your windows hosts file btw.

It’s not. I’ve had it since it took over and I have NEVER had any issues with it. I open it, let everythiing update, close it out, and it’s gone until the next time I choose to update. I had no bloatware when it installed. It works just fine and I’m happy with it.

I like it. I check for updates daily and have had zero issues.
