May I suggest “lord of the rings online” or “eve online” These are my go-to games when I get burnt out from playing warcraft. I also play battlefield 4 sometimes if you dig fps games
All decent games imo

You do know why they were laid off?
yep… bunch of new systems, same design goals - just pushing max /timeplayed off meager rewards
rewards still funnel everyone into manual matchmaking, as that is where most cash shop gold buying whales exist
Gw2 is actually better than wow in many ways. GW2 is better than FFXIV in most ways.
My buddy plays new world, he just told me they dominated the server so much that both of the other 2 factions left the server killing it in the process so now him and his faction using there free xfer to go to an opposite faction dominated server to challenge them… not many people last passed lvl 30 when you realize You’ve been doing the same 3 quests for 30 lvls
It was publicly announced that layoffs were not needed, but were being used as a means of managing short term profits. A lot of QA and CS people got let go, and it shows.
I think you really overestimate the new player experience. It’s extremely hard to get into WoW as a brand new player who continues to play after a short period. I’ve tried to get some RL friends to join and none of them stuck around… the one lasting longest lasted for a tier.
The game is overwhelming to new players. I had a friend who really likes some of the raid end boss mounts from previous expansions and quit as soon as he realized they are 1% drop. His reason is that he would never get any, so why bother trying and staying in a game where he’s likely never going to catch up
What was publicly announced was public fabricated opinion.
Wow, had no clue this post would get this much attention. Ty for sharing your thoughts everyone. We love our game that’s for sure.
It’s a shame this company is in the dire state it’s in. I wish the best for everyone hurt and involved.
I know that no game is gonna last forever, this just felt like so much more to me in my life. WoW has helped me through a lot, it got me through some pretty severe depression as my younger self. I met and have some amazing friends from this game.
I sit here and look at the launcher and it says “2 days” left of sub time.
Will always cross my fingers for the next expansion. Gotta stay positive.
Until then, take care all!
I remember in the past “It’s the Holidays” = “Kids are out of school and the queues to log in are insane”.
And we’ll see if “It’s the Holidays” translates into “People are spending time with their family” when Endwalker comes out, lol.
Pretty sure the queues will be the stuff of legends.
It has nothing to do with people not being on their computers. It has everything to do with the game just not being fun anymore.
The “announcement” was made by bobby. Not by the public. It was intended to keep investors confident that the company was making money and secure.
I’ll make a kickstarter for a new MMO. It’s literally gonna be called ‘The WoW Killer’.
Currently recruiting a dream team.
There’s a lot more MMOs than you mention, if you are wanting to keep playing in that genre. Just because they’re not a “big name” doesn’t mean they’re not fun or worth your time. My wife and I decided to try out Neverwinter a week ago on a lark and we’ve found we absolutely love the game
Expand your options and you may find you’ve been missing out on a game that really hits the spot for you just because it wasn’t popular enough.
That seems to be what Blizzard thought too.
I ran a guild two expansions ago. I think I’m one of the only ones left that still plays.
In a guild of 93 members.
I try not to think about it or I become too sad.
There is a passage read by a history professor in a wonderful Lecture about the Bronze Age collapse. It is enlightening for a number of situations you can relate to that.
Josh Strife Hayes just released a video on choosing an MMO, profiling the pros and cons of many popular ones. Notably his only mention of wow was in passing as he said that the genre seems to be undergoing a revitalization because of um, you know. It made me feel like maybe he’s anticipating profiling in his “Worst MMO Ever” series. Or we’ll see it someday in “Death of a Game”.
I downloaded Horizon Zero Dawn a couple days ago on Steam. Amazing game and I can’t help but wonder how it would play as an mmo.
The graphics, music, gameplay, and story are leagues beyond WoW to the point that it is almost anger-inducing when I realize how much time I’ve spent in WoW.
You know solo games can do much better than MMORPGs because they are solo games, right ?
Riot is making an MMO and their lead DEV helped make TBC and Wrath soooooooooo that might be a reality shortly
