My money’s on the other theory being floated around that TBC and Wrath will be cyclical, but with no actual permanence.
Why?
Because this company is hung up on arena with trying to pass it off as a legit E-Sport, assuming arena hasn’t been allowed in E-Sports but I haven’t kept up on that.
They don’t want us getting complacent with our Brutal gear or we may not bother regrinding the seasons over and over…
I know that’s exactly the case for me. This will be the last time I grind out arena gear.
I mentioned it already why Duel Spec is bad for Era. It harms classes that are brought with hybrid specs. Now there is no reason to bring them, you can min/max with duel spec. It fundamentally changes a core part of Classic WoW and will effect raid composition. The pets and collection stuff - few really care about that since it doesn’t effect the game play at all, unlike DS.
If dual spec has ZERO downside then the same would be true of Tri spec, Quad spec… Giga-spec etc…
but we know thats not true so that brings us back to the question: How much does Dual spec diminish the Classic experience? The answer is definitely SOME
Only if you value, or are intended to value, adversity in spec choice as driver for exploration. Specsploration?
We know the majority of the player base doesn’t value this. It’s evident that by adding dual spec to Era, Blizzard doesn’t either.
Which is just too bad. It was a fun system to engage with if you understood that you didn’t have to be the best all the time, and that the alternatives ended up being very much “good enough”.
there’s a saying in the creative world “Limitations breed creativity” which seems to be true across many fields.
look at big budget films or games with unlimited resources that are devoid of maximizing creativity for their solutions when compared to a low budget game or movie that is forced to maximize it’s creativity due to its limitations.
if people have access to everything at once they have access to nothing at all. Classic wow really exemplified this with the limitations it had in place across many aspects of the game.
The class design where no one class can do everything so must group with other players of different classes to fill the gaps is an example of these limitations actually improving the experience. Something that was lost in later iterations of the game as every class gained access to everything
Dual spec is a step towards this same lack of limitations which is a detriment to the creative aspect of the games design.
Some? Its gone, lol. Era is officially dead and buried.
You could look at every other major change in isolation and even justify one or more of them but when you add them along with these new changes (especially when you account for the reasons for the changes) Era can no longer offer a classic experience. Its a Wrath experience now - you can’t have your cake and eat it too.
Oh 100%. There’s this little fantasy console that I absolutely love, called PICO-8, that’s founded on exactly that premise. You have limited processing power, limited graphics capabilities, limited code size even, but the stuff people make with it is incredible. If you’re a programmer dork, it’s worth checking out
I bet none of those who are whining about two specs are maining a healer. I played holy priest in classic vanilla and resto shaman in classic TBC on Grobbulus. Try walking in my shoes.
Do your damage buttons not work as a heal spec priest or shaman? My resto druid seems to be able to use wrath, starfall, moonfire, and insect swarm just fine.
My obligatory post to say I enjoy having dual spec.
Currently rocking a fc spec and a 30/0/21 balance spec on the druid. I’m much more likely to play wsg and help run flags now. I wouldn’t really queue for it ever if it meant paying 50g to leave feral or balance spec.
