Interesting you mention GW2, I have tried the game multiple times and almost forget why I don’t love it until I try, 2 main things:
(slightly off topic but) “Fight to survive” dumbest mechanic of all time, dead should just be dead
The thing you mention here: Lack of animation canceling. The insistence on completing the animation even when the player has pressed a key that starts another one. WoW controls the flow of input with cooldowns including a global cooldown, but to actually lock the player up based on an animation a la GW2 or FF14 is ridiculous IMO
WoW’s (and Rift’s, and other WoW clones) animation cancel is so superior. Rift is a dead game, but if you login for a sec and try the movement, it’s identical to WoW. Very few games work this way anymore, and feels like skyriding is moving away from it.
That’s not “clunky.” That’s just a little more realistic to the type of physics they put into it. Ain’t no one turning on a dime with that type of speed and gliding physics. lol
Doesn’t mean better. When you cast a spell, press a movement key. What happens? It’s not realistic. Your animation cancels immediately. With a flying mount it’s the same. It’s not realistic at all, yet it’s still superior than long running animations for an MMO.
100% - actually skyriding itself was quite cool the first time I tried it, and it’s even cool every time I want to use it.
When I say clunky I mean as you define it here. It doesn’t jive with the rest of the game with movement actions on the action bar, the way players now skip across the screen, I mean the entire look/feel of it is a total departure from the positional mechanics of the game.
Not looking for “reactive” because it’s not a criticism of the feature itself so much as how it is configured as a default option instead of one that is opted into.
Ah yes the incredible of skill of riding a mount. Forget about PvP or raiding, this guy is saying flying a mount is something you can master and be proud of.
This feels like recommending a 10-speed bike for the freeway instead of a BMX bike, when you should recommend a car for the freeway. Use portals/teleports/hearthstones/flight paths if you care about getting there faster.
I don’t think the point of mounts is to go as fast as possible. I was invited to the closed beta of original TBC years ago and the client we downloaded to try it, the player movement speed must have been 2k+ you would flyyy around the map. It was of course for testing reasons, it almost breaks the 4th wall of the game because the movement was so fast.
So idk, not all about “top speed” for me. I would be happy with a modest flight speed increase at level cap as before, and make skyriding an optional gimmick limited to some questlines.
steady flight is locked because Ion has a hate woody (cant say what i wanna say, forum rules) for flight but cant get rid of it cause everyone would hate that, steady flight shouldnt be locked at all though because some people are physically unable to skyride, and others simply dont like it
