WoW has always had the best controls. It’s one of the main reasons so many other MMOs fall short - despite having amazing graphics the other MMOs never nail down the basics like movement and feel the way WoW does.
But skyriding abandons that feel - it feels clunky, old, not WoW-like. It feels gimmicky like mounted combat in that one expansion… or how some other MMO might try to pull off flying mounts in a clunkier way. I wouldn’t mind having it limited to a set of quests in a certain area since the first time you use it it’s kinda cool, but really, really hate it as the default. It gets old extremely fast.
Gotta ask: If the feature is soo good then why is the regular flight mode the one you have to unlock? Wouldn’t you gate access to the newer, better feature? Otherwise that means the expansion gives you actually a worse feature then gates access to the one you already had! Wtf lol. I really wish they would get rid of skyriding as a default, it’s so bad. The concept of putting movement controls as actions on the action bar takes me back to FF11 or Everquest - it feels old.
At the very least, remember my config when I change to regular flight mode instead of always putting me back in the gimmicky one when I teleport to another zone please!
EDIT: The mods changed the title of this post from “Skyriding is soo stupid lmao” to “Skyriding feels clunky” Since when are moderators actually re-writing content on behalf of players? Crazy
I don’t know what’s “clunky” about it. Hit Skyward Ascent, point self on a slight downward angle, fly around. Hit Surge Forward if you want to get somewhere faster.
It’s just using a gravity style gliding system that other games have used many times.
Finish the leveling campaign and then don’t use it.
Because the devs want you playing the campaign in the way they find immersive. Originally, that was on the ground. Now, it’s with dynamic flying.
Once you finish their campaign the way they want it done, you can do whatever you want.
Skyriding should be limited to races and the occasional quest/event. It’s a terrible form of movement and I never use it outside of the above mentioned conditions. If they are going to keep it a hovering option needs to be added for it.
Used skydiving since it was added in df, I think I used air swimming to loot a chest in a tree once during Amirdrassil but other than that I’ve never looked back.
I disagree with clunky. But, if regular flying was the same speed as skyriding, no one would skyride. So as another pointed out. It makes for good racing, even though I like Mario cart better, and the air combat is good for special events or maybe a boss fight.
What skyriding really takes away from is immersion. If our dragons fly, breath fire, and can be tamable enough for riding, why do we keep discovering islands and why am I using a knife on a boss when I can ride a dragon?
I find these takes to be hilarious. If you think flying a mount requires “skill” I wonder how difficult you find high-rated 2v2 or raiding. Maybe some players find “flying downward” to be a thrill that is somehow difficult to do, but I don’t, and I doubt most people find this very challenging either. It’s not why we play an MMO at least, I already played that dragon flying game on PS1 years ago
Both flight styles are enjoyable to me, personally, though I do feel that it may have been better if Blizzard had chosen the traditional flight style to be the default for accessibility reasons.
Does yours re-enable itself all the time though? Also I noticed most of the mount animations don’t work well with it - for example horse mounts that can fly. They look awful when skyriding.
Once again going to say that having to choose from the word go is the better option and that gating it is a stupid concept. Blizzard needs to let go of pathfinding, and the community needs to understand that giving constructive criticism goes a lot further than destructive criticism.
Once again, having both options unlocked for people doesn’t take away from your fun if you like skyriding. You can do and have both things. Both is good. Options are good. Locking options behind pathfinding is bad.
I use normal when I’m having to find gathering stuff in old world. It’s more leisurely. Easier. I can’t do normal cause I haven’t unlocked it. Too busy doing rps and delves to bother. Still need to do the campaign on this character.
Though again it’d be funner if you run out of vigor, your mount disappears and you’d just plummet to the ground like in Aion. Teaches you to use it sparingly. Cause if you ran out of flight time in Aion, your wings disappeared and you died. Same with gliding.
1/10 trolling with this “skill issue” take. It’s a bad take because it just makes you look like the bad player - because you think flying a mount is hard. So this kind of trolling actually backfires! Careful out there
