is there a reason orgrimmar seems to have different shards?
same thing effecting MG stormwind

As I understand it it’s a temporary measure to deal with the huge population overload from expansion launch. It should be removed in a few weeks.
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could start important quests in the other major cities so we’re not all funneled into Org and SW causing stability issues and thus sharding and splintering the RP community.
It’s a bit of a catch 22 imo, as the reason these places are RP hubs is because they’re also central gameplay hubs.
Would love to see RP in other cities too. But outside of SMC people tend not to because Orgrimmar and Stormwind are central hubs.
But yeah if like Ironforge somehow became the place with all the portals and other means of travel around Azeroth, it’d probably be just as busy.
I would like to see all faction capitals become equally stuffed with amenities (portals, barbers, transmog, major quest pickups and turn ins, etc), both so that we wouldn’t all overload one place when new content comes out and so that this:
Wouldn’t have to be true anymore.
RP in more varied places would be great.
will never happen, requires them to update silvermoon city
pass revoked
Wish more would capitalize on this opportunity to use Ironforge and Thunder Bluff. There are portals directly to those cities now! Bring back the pre-Cata state of things!
I disagree, it’s like when the pre-patched came out some of us to avoid potential lag bombs went to Outland or Ironforge to get our hair cuts because it’s available in different places and we didn’t all have to go to SW.
There’s no reason why they couldn’t have threw some Death Knight NPCs in Ironforge or Thunderbluff since all you do is accept a quest and immediately teleport to another place before getting chucked into the Maw.
I imagine doing so would reduce the worry about stability issues and the need for so much heavy sharding.
Same with Exodar, crashed forever
It’s like when I first moved into my apartment and didn’t unpack for like 6 months except in this case it’s FOREVER
Actually sadly enough those are the only cities that don’t have portals directed at them as of Shadowlands
Although I suppose technically you can take the Orgrimmar portal to Dazar’alor and then take the Dazar’alor portal to Thunder Bluff.
Right! I just mean that they’re easy to get to again. And even if not, dangit, let’s get out in the world again!
Gotta say, Horde RP was pretty cool during the Darkspear Rebellion for that reason. Even if it was just from Orgrimmar to Razor Hill, it felt cool!
I don’t really RP in SW or Org myself but would love if more people ventured out. There’s some of us that hang out in Ironforge!!
I just really hate sharding, I’ve told this story before about why sharding is dumb but back in BfA doing an invasion in warmode.
I’m in a 5man group trying to complete the invasion objectives but an Alliance raid is camping the area. So using Blizzard’s logic of confronting a PVP situation with PVP, we formed our own counter raid to address the Alliance raid only to get moved to an empty shard with no Alliance raid to fight. Yet I still can’t do my objectives since I’m in a raid now so our original group drops raid and reform a new 5man only to get dunked back into the shard with the Alliance raid hahahaha. So we reformed with a new raid only to get moved back to the shard with no Alliance raid AND PVP DIDN’T HAPPEN
It’s both honestly hilarious when you think about it, two raids running around trying to find people to fight but there’s no one around so PVP didn’t happen
So not even just RP but thinking about like, missed connections seeing a friend or someone running around out in the world and stopping and saying hey what’s up and not having that anymore because we’re all splint into our own weird parallel universe.
I came here to see if WrA was having a similar discussion on the matter.
Sharding isn’t supposed to be used on our realms outside of end-game content zones (i.e the Shadowlands atm), but was turned on for pre-patch content and the expansion launch. I assume for a myriad of reasons, including the time crunch of a raid releasing next week and the holidays coming soon, Blizzard kind of … forgot about us.

I made this thread yesterday and it’s gotten a fair bit of traction; support by liking, sharing, or commenting in the thread would be really helpful for everyone, I think— Especially if we have something big that we can point to via tweets @BlizzardCS or @WarcraftDevs
We’ll get through it like we always do. Positive vibes.
Oh cool! I don’t really look at General but I’ll post in support!
I crawled out of the Wyrmrest hole to post in the thread. It’s a pretty big deal, I was RPing with a group and everyone but me and one other person suddenly vanished. That’s not even including all the times I’ve gone into the Tail seeing like 10 people in it on the TRP map scan, then finding no one inside. Making stuff suck :c
I mean, demon hunters already require them to update Silvermoon City, since they turn the place into swiss cheese with their ability to quad jump.
I wasn’t even aware sharding within the major cities was a thing until much like Atielle, during the BfA-to-Shadowlands-lull I actually hit up the scene on my rogue, was talking to some folks who then phased out of reality, and later on was trying to track a few people for RP jobs and couldn’t find them in my version of Stormwind - asking to party with them to get vacuumed over to their part of the world would have defeated the entire purpose - and it really kind of killed the character for me.
I have a friend in an Alliance guild who said his guild is moving to MG because they don’t see any RPers in SW. They didn’t know about the sharding and just assumed RP was dead. Either way, they apparently had a vote and are still moving to MG with the assumption that it’ll be better there
when I am the only Alliance player left with Sint I promise to turn Stormwind into a theme park
Apparently when it comes to how Blizzard develops things, there’s a “New Assets Budget” that they have for every expansion, so it’s extremely unlikely we’ll see any update to any of the capital cities, especially Silvermoon and Exodar unless they’re relevant to the expansion. (Silvermoon almost happened in BfA. Then dropped completely, probably to pursue the N’zoth storyline rather than the War Campaign.)
NPC’s don’t take a lot, although, textures and updated models for buildings and more would take a good chunk of new assets. I think what’s more likely to happen is every expansion they’ll just make new assets that they can re-use every expansion then just go all-out on an old-world revamp expansion.
It’d be nice though, although I suspect that people will still congregate to Stormwind/Orgrimmar because it’s just established as RP-Hubs already. Albeit, to a lesser degree.
I feel Blizzard’s development process is like two guys driving a bus and one of them is out of his mind.
The normal guy drives the bus for awhile and then hits a nice stretch of road and thinks this is an easy ride, so he gives it to the other guy and goes in the back to take a nap since he’s been driving all day.
Then he wakes up an hour later to the sound of screaming. The bus is on fire, filled with chickens, some of whom are armed, plowing through the aisles of a Walmart.
He spends some time wresting control of the wheel from the other guy, then he spends a lot of time backing out of the Walmart and getting the chickens out of the bus. Then he goes for a little while until he reaches a nice stretch of road and feels that this time, there will be no chickens.
But there are always chicken and they are always bigger, meaner and more armed than the last time.
