You’re touching on an interesting philosophy of mind question,I think. But to this discussion I say no, and that’s why I illustrated the difference between “I don’t like x” and “I’m better than you for having the wisdom to know that x empirically sucks”
I think that if you want to drink 7up or play a Pokemon survival game, that’s up to you. And me thinking it sucks should have very little impact.
My opinions if a game will do well or not, should also not matter, since it’s largely based on biases. What I wrote was not an essay, it was an unfiltered opinion.
An unfiltered opinion on other people, is the salient distinction. You have every right to that opinion, and only a moron could say they’ve heard otherwise in this thread! And the great thing about bringing up such a judgement is that it invites follow up questions
Are you denying the existence of hype trains created by marketing campaigns and their intended purpose?
No, not even a little. Where did you get that impression?
So, how is me referencing being too old for hype trains as an attack on people who bought the game?
Or what argument are you trying to make here?
I have no issue with follow up questions as long as they’re genuine.
Alright it can be hard to tackle lots of ideas at once so I’ll just work on this one.
Warcraft itself is based on a “stolen” genre and “stolen” art styles and aesthetic.

Patrick Wyatt, a games development legend and former Blizzard executive
We were inspired to create Warcraft after playing (and replaying and replaying) a game called Dune 2, by Westwood Studios.
I screen-captured the artwork of Dune 2 to use until such time as my forward progress warranted an artist or two.
Warcraft resembled nothing so much as a stripped-down version of Dune 2, so much so that I defensively joked that, while Warcraft was certainly inspired by Dune 2, the game was radically different - our radar minimap was in the upper-left corner of the screen, whereas theirs was in the lower-right corner.
Allen Adham hoped to obtain a license to the Warhammer universe to try to increase sales by brand recognition. Warhammer was a huge inspiration for the art-style of Warcraft, but a combination of factors, including a lack of traction on business terms and a fervent desire on the part of virtually everyone else on the development team (myself included) to control our own universe nixed any potential for a deal.
Years after the launch of Warcraft my dad, upon returning from a trip to Asia, gave me a present of a set of Warhammer miniatures in the form of a skeleton charioteer and horses with the comment: “I found these cool toys on my trip and they reminded me a lot of your game; you might want to have your legal department contact them because I think they’re ripping you off.” Hmmm!
We’re only here talking because Blizzard did in the 90s with Warcraft what Pocket Pair is doing today with Palworld.
But because Warcraft happened 30 years ago, it’s no big deal. Palworld doing it today doesn’t fit in with your limited view of the world so you think you’re ethically, intellectually, or artistically above it.
What an interesting question. You’re excusing yourself for choosing the term “fall for” entirely,I guess. But even so, this makes it seem like you yourself don’t know what you mean by hype train. The answer to your question is that attack is much too strong a word, but an inauthentic marketing strategy that moves a product in volume divorced from its quality relative to the market wouldn’t affect the discerning consumer. To say that the game’s succeeding based on that is to call its consumers undiscerning, and to puff yourself up as the opposite. I’m glad you asked
I think there’s a difference between stolen and inspired. If you showed me an orc from Lord of the Rings, and an orc from WoW. I could tell you the difference. There are also characteristics of these creatures and how they behave that make them different enough to be noticeable.
If you showed me a monster from this new game and a Pokemon, I would not be able to tell the difference. And I grew up with Pokemon.
Are you ignorant about wow or about lotr then
You’re proudly in possession of no knowledge of this new game, so for this comparison to work you’d need to know nothing of one of the orc examples
I’ve watched a few streams, which is what I generally do now when a new game comes out. I’m def not an expert on it.
If people like it that’s fine. Maybe down the road if they add new features and it looks like it’s a good game, I’ll get it.
Yes, and Palworld was inspired by Pokemon.
LotR is the inspiration for the thing that inspired Warcraft. Warcraft was inspired by Warhammer, which was inspired by Dungeons and Dragons, which was inspired by Lord of the Rings, which was inspired by Celtic mythology, which was inspired by ancient spiritual fiction…
These aren’t perfect or exhaustive inspiration links but hopefully you get the idea: edges between sources and inspiration are often blurred. A two-degree separation like the one you described is easier to distinguish than the original spark of change.
Warcraft IP today is completely different than what it was 30 years ago. It’s had those 30 years to refine itself and establish its style, which by the way is basically just a redo of Joe Madureira’s art style (Battle Chasers from 1998, and Darksiders). Also let’s not forget World of Warcraft stealing from Everquest 20 years ago where again we have one of those blurred edges.
But, Warcraft got big, and so everyone recognizes it and thinks it’s the progenitor.
Maybe you’ll see and recognize more of these things happening as you get older.
Ah, okay then.
“Being called as” bahaha
Lol I saw your edit. I don’t think there’s any getting through to you, today, but hopefully these little nuggets of information soak in the recesses of your mind and help improve your thinking in the future. It takes time.
I’d rather not argue something so pointless lol. Saying that something is stolen being the same thing as inspiration is such a silly thing. If you guys want to argue that, you can do it without me lol.
I learned a new word today, ty
good, hopefully the woke forum mod who keeps banning me is on that list.
Actually was a lot of GM/CM positions I guess LOL
Blizzard refused to change, the game has been on life support for years. Kept alive by whales and a player base over 30 lol.
Game is at the bottom, I hope Microsoft rolls and cleans house. If this game does NOT change to bring in and retain new gamers, then its finished. Sorry for all the Elitist but it is what it is.
