I’m having a hard time picking a server between Grobbulus and Bloodsail Buccaneers. I like RP and PvP equally and the decision should be easy but it really isn’t.
I’ve seen a lot more conversation surrounding Grobbulus about not roleplaying there than anything else. Yes, there’s a few posters that have said they’re planning to RP there or that they’d like to try it but they’re far outweighed by those that are adamant about rolling there but not participating. An RP-PvP server without RP is a very sad thing and I don’t want to go through that again.
Bloodsail is a safer bet on the RP side of things, hands down. It obviously wouldn’t have the same levels of PvP frequency as Grobbulus, but I can still opt in to it and get bluewalled to my heart’s content? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But with how the world is set up, there’s so many RP opportunities to explore that missing out on random ganks would be fully worth it.
Whichever way I go, I’d like to establish some roots early on both sides of the spectrum. I’ve got some fun ideas cooking away but I need to have a place to put them.
For the folks rolling on the Classic RP servers, which one are you rolling on?
Do you plan on roleplaying? If you do, to what extent? Light, heavy? Are you trying it out for the first time?
Do you plan on PvPing? If you’re going for BB, do you think you’ll wait until battlegrounds get added or will you wade in before the honor system rolls out?
I was so excited to role RP-PVP, until I saw that there were no servers for that. I was going to choose PVP over RP PVE though, because the world PVP and element of danger is that important to my experience.
I am so happy we got Grobb though, and will be doing lots of RP and PVP. Couldn’t be happier.
I’m BB, but I would make a character on both. Time will tell what the culture towards RP will be… the forums aren’t a good judge of that.
That said, I am playing it safe as you said and rolling on BB. RP-PVP servers have a long history of community fizzling into almost complete non RP. Even the dead/dying RP servers have a core of RPers.
Being on the Discord for Grobbulus, plenty of people have noted their style is going to be “Not actively seeking out RP, but will respond in character”.
A lot of talk on the forums comes from certain threads where people are fighting back against a very stubborn viewpoint, so it’s not really all that indicative of the server community as a whole.
Granted the percentage of people not participating in RP will probably be a bit higher, since it’s only natural that some people will seek out the server for the wPvP aspect that RP-PvP has a reputation for.
I’d say join the Discord for Grobb and BB and see how it feels there. The thread for the Grobb Discord is here:
I am actually on both Discords and it hasn’t made it much clearer yet. I do have a bit of trouble following bigger Discords but that’s something I need to work on.
If I hadn’t already had an over hyped RP-PvP server experience on retail, I’d be a bit more optimistic. Still, it is very appealing. Mainly interested in hearing more viewpoints without having the hurdle of “NO U” to cross.
I think there are more people planning to RP on Grobbulus. Don’t let the RP gatekeeper and pushback response of those who won’t obey him make you think almost no one plans to RP.
I’m actually planning both. I’ll be Alliance on Bloodsail Buccaneers, joined by my sister-in-law and brother because she wants to try RP. I’ll be Horde on Grobbulus.
I tend to have backstories for my characters even on PvE (non-RP) realms. On Sentinels (my main realm) and Blackwater Raiders (my second RP realm), I used to channel RP - using /join RP and /join OOC, and then using chat with others on those channels to play out being in a tavern/inn and talking, telling stories, and more. I attended occasional events, such as story-telling in the Duskwood graveyard or the Running of the Bulls.
However, I’m not big on face-to-face RP. It actually bores me to spend an hour having a 10-minute conversation, waiting on the other person to respond with words and emotes. I’d rather be physically out in the world questing, doing dungeons or raids, while typing out the RP.
I’m a minimal PvPer who doesn’t really want to deal with ganking and corpse-camping. I only roll RP-PvP (or regular PvP) as a background alt for when I’m okay with that vibe, and I’m quite willing to just quit and play another character rather than waste my time being killed over and over.
I do enjoy brawls, like we used to do in Crossroads or TM vs SS or Sentinel Hill, where I’m just one of dozens on one side, not a singular target. That’s probably the big thing I hope to enjoy on both RP realms. (There is some blue-walling on RP-PvE, but usually at the wPvP brawls there were more people who wanted to fight clean and didn’t pull dirty stuff.)
I had hoped for 1.5 AV. As it is, odds are I won’t really get into BGs unless I play long enough to decide to make a twink alt.
i suggest you yoin the bloodsail discord… from my understanding there will be alot of pvp set up like events… and personally i like that much much more, then you get fun world pvp, and dont need to deal with the gank hazzle…
The problem with grobbulos, is alot of events is things you want to do without combat, and a few can really mess up events thats been prepared by alot of people… i love pvp, but it can also be used very very toxic… its why i prefer Bloodsail, since you get best of both worlds, and you eliminate “gankers/toxic” people
Well, I put my Main, my Tank, Qthulhu, and my Other Main, my Healy Priest, Qrispian, on BB, but I also put a class I never played before, a Rogue, Quince, on Grob.
All are Undead, so all are Horde, and I plan to try and level em all up in rotation, five levels at a time, which I guess means I will take three times longer to get to 60 in Classic than I took in Vanilla.
I plan and hope to soundly RP em all, and the back story of each has a different attitude: Q the despairing Forsaken ex[tremely ex-] Paladin, Qrispian the ex-Holy Priest sorely tempted by The Shadow, and Quince, the angry young man, hellbent on killing ANYone and EVERYone as alive as he is Undead.
Not to be “that guy”, but if you’re tossing up a RP vs. a RP-PvP realm and don’t know which route to go, go normal.
If the concept of being always flagged for PvP in contested zones doesn’t excite you then go RP. On the flip side, if the concept of no forced PvP flagging and not being able to kill the enemy faction in the open world doesn’t feel right to you, roll PvP.
Expecting an entire server to be hardcore RPers is naive either way. If you want a PvP server and to RP, pick Grob and find a good RP guild.
That said, I’ve seen some hardcore RP discussion for Grobb, up to the point where there are threads on its subreddit where they discuss viable names and such.
It’s impossible to say for sure, but I think you’re worrying too much about Grobb’s non-RP side; I’m sure it will be just fine.
Been dying to try an RP server for a long time and I’m finally going to do it. The thought of a fresh server and community gets me excited. I’m thinking to make Alliance on Grob (since I’m going horde on a PvP server to play with IRL friends) and then if I like RP I will make Horde on BB.
Of course all the forum posts are going to scew towards people announcing that they aren’t going to RP of Grob. because no one is going to react to post saying “im thinking of rolling on an rp server to try roleplaying” no excitement, no drama, not worth making a forum post about.
